Transferring Games

When I get my new pc I'm not going to be able to have the new one and the old one going at the same time, and I wondered what's the easiest way of getting my existing games and all their innumerable updates on to the new pc?

I've got hard disks for some of them, but some were download only - does that mean I have to buy those again?

I do this quite a bit.  Just copy the game folder onto your backup external hard drive and copy them back on the new pc.  On windows 7 some games may complain about permissions, but you can fix that by running as admin.  Some games may repatch themselves when you launch them the first time

if your not that computer savvy, just re-install them.  you wont have to repurchase games.

Although its not the prefered method, the easiest way is to just not reformat the drive.  Its not clean and their might be some problems.  You won't be able to solve the problem by simply moving the games to a folder since most downloaded games have keys attached to them and have files in hidden folders.

The thing about most downloaded games is you can redownload them if you bought them.  Steam and IGNs service allow for infinite downloads.  Digital River allows you to redownload for a 2 year period.  If you got them from EB Games or Newegg, then they probably also offer a method of redownload.
