I wanted to like it, I tried to like it, but it just didn't have too many key factors:
character customization - almost nill, if one witch hunter is noticeably different than the next four, that one witch hunter is probably doing something wrong
Agree. Not much with customization, aside from gear/spec (which most players ran the "best" spec).
ugliness - the factions are ugly (ugly places, ugly ideals/standards), the character models are ugly and the animations are ugly...
I dunno, the game looks far better than DAoC, and WoW (which it mainly competes with for "RvR/PvP" MMOs).
balance - some say it is there, I didn't see it
It's there, somewhat. Depends on which classes you're talking about. For instance, the Squig Herder is probably one of Destruction's perfectly balanced classes, and the Archmage is Order's. Some other classes, like the White Lion, Witch Elf, and Marauder are some classes that are negatively balanced. The Ironbreaker, Witch Hunter, and Choppa are pretty close or are OP.
fluidity - movement and character control are about 2 years choppier than wow. I know why but the devs/designers made the wrong choices there.
Movement/control is some of the best I've seen. You have to control your toon throughout entire fights, no auto follow IE: Guild Wars. Lag comes into play of course and can make certain archetypes better than others at times. WoW is no more "fluid" than War, that's a fact.
I loved the videos that they used to sell the game.
I dont hate WAR. The game killed it self by "balancing" it on "RVR" a nd ignoring PVE content balance.
50% of gamers will always be loosers in PVP. Now.. think forward 3 months and see the results... then think 3 years forward and see the lack of funds take care of the rest.
Alot of ppl wiill hate WAR cause the game has bad PVE content.
I had a great time playing WAR from the starter areas up through Tier 3. Then it became awfully repetitive. The scenarios were fun at first but eventually became a grind (although IMHO they were much better than WOW's battlegrounds). Open RVR was disappointing. Warbands would purposely avoid each other to take lightly defended keeps. Finally, WAR has some of the worst PVE of any game on the market. Public quests were a brilliant idea, but after launch hardly anyone does that content. It's almost impossible to die in PVE unless you're being incredibly stupid.
I think the biggest hate comes from how hyped WAR was before release. I remember going to the WAR preview at PAX and listening to Paul Barnett describe WAR as the second coming. I think many players were hoping for a game that offered the same polish and content as WOW but with a greater focus on PVP. Instead, we got a rather buggy game at launch that just didn't seem like it was worth the subscription price.
Aside from all the bugs and glitched what mostly pissed me off is when i was playing my shadow warrior and i fought any mellee class they just come up after me shooting all my cooldowns in them and destroy me in 3 shots, i had good gear on me and good stats that fit my class but everytime something got close to me always kills me. I played a hunter in wow and I was decent in kiting but in war i didnt see any reason of kiting when which elf comes up to you, puts a debuff that deals damage while you are moving that basicaly kills you. I started just running away everytime i saw something approching me and that worked well but it wasnt fun at all. I quit the game, waited 6 months and came back to it. I thought "Ok, WAR is not WoW i guess the pvp here is different, maybe it all depends on the skill of a group and not the skill of one player" So I got into a very good guild with decent people. We really did cover each other, healed when need and always dominated other team. As i was leveling my character i found that doing quests and even group quests was really boring and it took more time than just doing scenarios. I did scenarios till I got to rank 40. Someone told me that all fun starts at rank 40. At rank 40 all I was doing was capturing zones and castles (sounds fun on paper). When I did that ethier the castle was just empty or there was a bunch of noobs defending it. Ofcourse our zerg was huge and we capture the castle no problem and at the end of killing the boss we always got some good gear. BUT! But what was the point of deffending the castle? We dont get any pvp points, we dont get any money, we dont even get any gear from that. So basicaly we ened up leaving the castle and waiting till someone captures it back so we can go and reclaim it to loot the boss again inside it. For me the game was not fun at all. I ended up going back to WoW at that time because I could not stand the boredom in WAR. I really wanted WAR to be successful and I even came back to it 3 times but after a week of playing I always uninstalled it.
Sorry for my english
I'm not going to say you didnt know how to play your class, because the shadow warrior is one of the hardest classes to play.
BUT!
I'm calling bullshit on almost everything else, especially the highlighted part.
You get more points (XP and renown) from defending a keep (and BO also) than you do from attacking. And if you successfully defend the keep it drops reward bags just like when attacking the keep.
The longer the battle for the keep goes on the better the bag drops, the higher the XP and renown, that goes for the attacker as well as the defenders. Not to mention there are repeatable quests from the keep lord to earn gold by killing the attackers.
Plus they made it so you dont have to stand next to a players corpse to loot it when they die, so youre getting gold (silver) and loot drop rolls from that also.
As an example in T3 I was on a keep defense for almost 2+ hours, which was absolutly awesome btw.
And once we drove them away (and got the defensive tick), I want to say the XP was like 12k, the renown was like 2200 and the influence was about the same.
They had broken the door down twice (maybe even three times), and pushed up to the keep lord as many times. And at one point they even had the keep lord down below 10% health. We had just a few of us left alive, but were able to rally and drive them out.
Im my opinion there is no better way to level in a MMO. There was zero grind to it, and nothing was "A.I" scripted. Was complete fluid gameplay.
You have to know how your class plays and your opponents also.
And the game is very tactical, and its what seperates the good from the bad.
"I understand that if I hear any more words come pouring out of your **** mouth, Ill have to eat every fucking chicken in this room."
I really enjoyed it when i first played it, on launch. My biggest problem with it was the lack of players, the world was just completely empty, i'm talking about European servers. Because of this one of the biggest selling points the grouped areas (can't remember what they were called now) just failed. You could do the first tier, maybe the second, but never the third. Mythic eventually merged many Euro servers but it made no difference. Even the major cities were empty.
Another problem was the linear nature of the play, going from one area to the next, funnelled along. Now all mmos have starting areas and progression but it is always possible to go back usually for a good reason to where you began, in WAR there was no point, you were just being poured through the game. I played a Witchhunter, still for me the best class i've ever played in an mmorpg ever, loved it, and i've played everything, but at the end of the day the game play was so basic and so controlled i just got very bored.
So, what I'm hearing is that really there aren't any good reasons to dislike it relative to most games - people are just disappointed in it compared to DAoC? Hmm... Whatever. I tried DAoC, it was just plain archaic. I guess I kinda wish I coud've played it before it got so old.
You're obviously not reading the replies then.
Mythic promised things, never delivered, unbalanced classes/factions = why they went from 800K boxes sold to ~100K subs shortly after launch.
I find it quite amusing you base your opinions off a chart which you don't even know is true or not considering there are 100's of charts showing differnt stastics over the internet in which you can search for on google pretty easyly, goes to show your complete and utter ignorance. The reason why i say this is, because 2 months ago there was a chart showing that there were over 350,000 subs for Age of Conan. Look, lets be honest here... no one knows the exact number crunch on subsciptions for any MMO. People can only assume.
Hardanger
Hi Hardanger, I'm not a fanboi eather. I don't play Warhammer Online anymore., But honestly, Don't listen to all these complainers. If you want to go to a place and listen too all the bitching and complaining about MMO's this is the site too do it! There are plenty oi MMO's out there which are hell of alot worse then Warhammer Online.
Wahammer Online is an ok MMO. It's nothing to shake a stick at though in terms of anything new. But it's also alot better then alot of the other MMO's out there as well. I wouldn't really listen to these guys on mmorpg most of them just come here to complain and argue about the games they don't like, and continually whine and complain about a game they didn't expect it to be. If you want to hear negative feedback from any game weather how good or bad it is MMORPG.com is the perfect place to find the complainers and whiners. I was actually told on here by many mmorpg users that Darkfall online was the devil of all MMO's and was terrible, and right now I have been playing it for a couple of months and am finding it quite fun to play. So don't take what you hear on here to heart so much. Everyone has their own opinions on what games are good and what games are bad. Just because someone says the game is bad dosn't mean it's bad. It just means it's not their type of game or playstyle they like.
Y'know don't be surprised when the new Starwars MMO comes out. I'm shure the same thing will happin when Starwars the Old Republic comes out because there are people who assume the games going to be the second comming of jesus.
Anyways, I am glad you are enjoying the game. It's not a bad MMO for what it's worth. It has alot of lore attached to it. And the pvp aspect is quite fun as well.
