I'd recommend Global Agenda, a sci-fi MMO/shooter hybrid. But I'll be upfront and say:
- You'll either love it or hate it (have a go at the free trial first).
- It's heavily instanced, which I think works but some gamers clearly hate.
- It's gonna get a massive update soon - patch 1.3 - which will improve the current gameplay significantly.
You buy it once and can play for free, or sub for extra content.
It's a heavily skill-orientated 3rd-person shooter with a few MMO elements at the moment, but they're working on adding a whole load more in patch 1.3 to satisfy player demand. It's more like a free expansion than a patch.
You can have a hell of a lot of fun in a 1-hour session, if it's your cup-of-tea.
Check my sig. for a whole load of similar games coming up that I'm looking forward to and may also meet your needs.

You can play completely casually also, Face of Mankind. WAR and GW fit the description very well too, i agree.
"Traditionally, massively multiplier online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars combat, exploration and character progression. In Alganon, in addition to these we've added the fourth pillar to the equation: Copy & Paste."

Its so hard to get into a focused pvp game as a casual player.
I struggle with this in Eve everyday and its turned me into a freaking pve player.
Best you can do is sub to those games with pvp mini games that arent really a focus of the game.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
