MMOs need virtual reality what do you think?

OmiragOmirag Member UncommonPosts: 276

SO consoles and PCs are great for none communication games. I log in, I shoot some people, and I am happy and log off. I think a major thing to bring MMOs to the fore front of gaming and to possibly take over gaming in general will be the development of middle class priced virtual reality break throughs. If you could log into a game like in DOT.HACK and actually be there and move how you move and be able to swing your sword low or high and have your movements translated into an avatar of different abilities and strength than you, it would be amazing. Talk about easy role playing since you could feel like you are your character. I think soon we shall see virtual reality taking huge leaps forward especially since companies are seeing how people reacted to 3D. The next logical step is more immersion into our entertainment.

DO you guys think this will happen?

And do you think it will make MMOs the most popular game genre?

Most importantly do you think it will bring back RPing?

I don't see it happening any time soon, atleast in the home market.  We are just starting to see 3d trickle in tech wise.

Also, from a liability standpoint, if you are running, jumping, swinging your arms in the real world to initiate actions ingame you could harm yourself by running into or punching a wall.   The Wii has the motion controller, but you are looking at the tv and your field of view is open, not obstructed by an immersive artificial environment.

This kind of tech would probably require a body suit, some kind of helmet with an immersive 3d field of view display tech and surround sound, and a real world environment that would allow the player to move around without bumping into or hitting things.

Ofcourse, it would be cool if I was wrong.

It would be great if you can play in your sleep using virtual reality applications. Especially for those who loves games but sometime cant find time to play.

I'd be one of the first to play a virtual reality MMO if there was such a thing.

I actually read an article about this a few years ago. It wasn't about gaming but working in your sleep.

The basic conclusion was that it's impossible with today's technology.  During sleep your consciousness goes into standby and your subconscious takes over (simplifying it).  Unfortunately we have very little control over what our subconscious does during sleep, so we would have to first somehow create a way to control what our minds do while we sleep.

Also keeping our conscious aware during sleep is not an option because sleep benefits the brain way more than the body.  So keeping our conscious inside a game, for example, while we sleep would leave us feeling exhausted in the morning.

    Anyway back to the OT:

I think VR is the natural progression of entertainment.  We may not see it for a few decades though.  Right now manufacturers are testing the water with 3D technology.  If it really takes off and gains in popularity I would guess in about 20-30 years we'll start seeing main-stream VR technology start to hit the consumer market.

But if 3D turns out to be seen as nothing more than a gimmick and does not sell well it could be a very long time before we see any recreational VR technology.

Im not too sure how much of .hack// you have actually seen but I think you'll find that they use a controller in conjunction with the visor. Sorry to rain on your parade. I do agree though, as a great fan of the animated series VR would be pretty awesome.

We already have amazing virtual reality technology.  It's called the Virtual Boy.  Der.

    i didnt think of that.

btw, speaking of the last post about a virtual boy. it kinda jogged my memories when they were testing a VR game in our local arcade bout 10+ years ago. it was only there for a couple of weeks but didnt caught on much popularity.

Atm I don't think the general processing power is widespread or cheap enough. The previous attempts at a digital VR 'game' lack either visual goodness or functionality.

For me I think the 3d miniture displays with body peripherals will not be the first steps into comonplace VR. I recently experienced a 2d room with the walls as screens and sensors recreating the movements you make, this was truely immersive purely because of the perspective of 360degrees was like stepping into a completely different world.

As for the sleep thing, well not everyone has the same sleep patterns. I am an insomniac and have been since about the age of 4 or 5, since which time I have slept on average between 2-4 hours per night, during which I have a sense of conciousness. I can amend my actions as I would with the same line of reason I do whilst awake, I have met many people with the same at the various sleep centres I have been to over the years.

at the snail pace html(wtachwemacallit)goes you ll get what you want in html69

the thing about say a virtual reality net isnt doing it it would be very easy the trouble is not everybody could access it!

why?because most net provider today give you insane download speed but dial up upload speed

and for virtual reality to work on the scal net work today you need 2 things minimum!

1 :2mbs,download and upload, 100 gig limit(maybe more on the last not sure) (this will be the hardest to get

2:microsoft donnybrook or maybe even better optimisation

this last one isnt gona be easy too because it means all old software are obsolete, and when that happen

wars like beta vs vhs, dvd vs blue ray or mp3 vs h264 emerge and in these it often slowdown progress to a snail

so the idea you mention is sound and was needed in the 90 s techno was already there back then

so far the only headway the industry manadged to do is what was avail in the 70 s

yep good old 3d plastic glasses oh they ll tout ya but they are better bla bla bla !i used both and the good old

blue and red glasses for 3d in the 70s were very close to what you get with the new 3 d rage .

yes there is a difference, but compare a vynile 33 turn disk vs a cd and tell me it was worth the change

lol not really the removed static we got stat6ic back in the net music lol

so your idea of full 3d imertion with 180 degres google about 6 inch high is sound you turn and the google detect it and

turn the image ,i lived it in the 90 s in netbar in montreal its nothing new and with todays techno

insanelly easy to do compared to back then .some are surprised when i say this

but its true google it.the thing is the only one that might get that will be linux user !why?because its an emerging market

what does this mean!there is literally a war going on in the linux world oh they say its for the better good of linux user

ya right mac is using linux and closing it to linux for the betterment of linux user lol ya make me laugh lol!

no the war is on the ownership of linux and the stake are way higher the everything avail for computer in the world

billion are being poured in linux ,some might say yes but its not user friendly !it is kept that way by the industry!

if your a programmer its very friendly for the other you  ll have to wait decade till one become the sole owner of linux

why you think ibm is in it ati is it and countless other company!they all want to own linux like ms own windows

so in there 3 d you mention is probably the fastest way to see 3d net browser for everybody become reality

and mozilla could very well be the one to achieve that goal in linux their genious is genuine and proven

hell they took an old techno and made it become one strong contender in the html5 world and manage to keep it free

    try this for fun!

so in the end if you want 3d virtual reality browser like you mention you best bet will probably  be linux (maybe mozilla) because it wont happen in the window or mac world for another 30 years they got too many other issue going on to bother with this

but linux world lol this might be THE  thing that could shift user to linux instead of ms and mac!

i sure would become a linux user in a heartbeat if there was a 3d virtual reality browser avail at linux end!

and as star treck as shown (kirk comunication device ,we call it a cellphone today)it often just take a silly ass idea to become the next biggest thing in the world

Not sure I understand why upload and download speeds have any reflection in it at all tbh, why would there need to be any more traffic than is needed for current games?

3d virtual reality browser need lot of data !but if the op meant only virtual 3 d game .then i dont see the point of his post because if he  google it ,there are lot of manufacturer of 3 d glasses (yes some are bad but a very limited few are insanelly good)that detect your motion when you turn etc .its not new has been avail since the 90 s.the biggest issue is they are often not big enough to immerse you properlly.but its avail for game only.but i believe my first post is what he meant!

he probably meant a 3virtual reality browser or whatever new name they ll come up by then!

and that my friend would be very nice if it existed!

ps:when i mention 3 d glasses i dont mean the crappy stuff a la avatar

i mean literaly a screen that wrap around your eyes180 degres about 5 to 6 inch high with headphone and motion sensor etc!

    thats the 3 d google a mean!

the 3 d that use your screen was avail in the 70 s it was bad then its still bad today!

I think I mis-stepped in my explanation. I meant more of brain reading. No swinging around a room randomly like the first real poster, and I was using 3d as a economic proof of people liking more immersive technology. I am talking about people putting on a helmet or plugging in a usb cord to their brain or the such. It sounds si-fi, but we all know it will happen. I believe gaming will be the first to take these steps. I am just opening the subject of how will it affect things like RPG and MMOs in general. People will get bored of shooters I think if they can hold the gun and shoot away at 16 people and get re matched every 30 mins. It will become more imperative to have a constant world when VR is actually viable and not so costly.

Yea, they will... VR suits have been in development for 10 years now (You don't want to know the source of that information) however it's still taking some time to get developed for the mass market.
