I always put them into beast mastery. why? I'm not sure. I should have put all/most of them in markmanship, but the extra pet talents are nice esp the improved healing spell.
Well, I would say marksmanship.. for both PvP and PvE.
Ranged attack is going to be your main DPS. A pet is good for a DoT, and for interrupting casters... but too many times your pet is going to be worthless.. whether because it is dead, sheeped, feared, etc. When that happens, pretty much all of the beast mastery talents are wasted.
In large PvP battles ranged attacks own all. The more damage you can do, the better.
I would also put maybe 10 or 11 points into Survival. Improved wingclip can be very helpful for 1v1 PvP, and the ability that gives you +25% dodge and parry can be useful, also.
For high-end PvE marksmanship wins by a mile IMO. In most instances your pet won't even be out, since they are usually more of a liability than they are a help. In places like MC, they'll get killed by AoE fast, and can cause additional aggro. In instances they often run around and aggro more mobs, which can lead to a wipe easily. So that makes the beast mastery talent tree all but worthless.
The same goes with survival.. in instances you're not going to be meleeing at all, so that talent tree is also worthless.
I would suggest putting 11 points into survival, and maybe all the rest into markmanship... except maybe 5 in beast mastery.
For leveling 1-60, beast mastery may come in handy, though.

I think beast mastery is a waste for talent points , cuz if ur pet dies , sleep, and fear which is most likly what would happen to your pet....this is a hole talent tree is going down.
I would say 3/4 of your skill points should go into Marksman ship and whats left over should go toward beast mastery.
That way you have a decent ranged attack, which in the event of a raid can be one of the best offensive spells and also, you keep your beast at least up to par with monsters.
Just my two cents, though I played a Mage.

I put just enough points into beast mastery to increase pet hp, and have been going straight marksmanship since. I don't have any regrets about that so far. I most often play with in a duo with shaman, and between the shaman and the pet, I hardly ever melee, so I feel that any points put in that direction would be a huge waste.

Marksmanship!!! TrueShot Aura adds more attack bonus to your other attack bonuses. Hunters aren't suposed to be Melee fighters, so why bother with Survival? Although Counterattack may seem interesting at first, but after trying it out, it's pointless.
And Beast Mastery has so many useless things that waste 5 talent points. Like who needs 10% more Focus to our pets. 10% of 100 focus is 110 focus! OMG! My pet has 10 more focus! Who gives a ...
I took the advice of my guildmates, ditch all Beast Mastery Talents, try it out for a week, if I really see a difference and my pet is dying more often, they'd pay me the 1 or 5 gold to respec back into Beast Mastery!
I never asked for that 1 or 5 gold! god there's like NO DIFFERENCE!!! If the talents gave like 25% more health and 25% more armor, then it would make a difference. But they don't! 10% extra health and armor does jack. Who needs a spell to make your pet make more threat? We have Disengage and Feign Death to send the mobs back to our pets anyways! And worst of all... who needs a high-mana consumption spell with an incredibly long cooldown that makes your health regenerate slightly faster everytime your pet deals damage? Okay in PVP it could save your 5 seconds of extra time to live... that's if the guy didn't freeze your pet, kill your pet or polymorph your pet thus rendering that skill completely useless and you had wish you had specialized in Marksmanship so you'd deal more Range damage!

I've learned this the hard way, although I dont think it is totally worthless. The pet, with the talents, helps with my dps alot, but I do wish I wouldnt have spent so many in beast mastery. I should have a least put SOME in markmanship. I'll survive.
I say the Survival tree. A hunter needs all the help they can get in hand to hand combat. The counterstrike ability is nice. They already rule the game in marksmanship ability. However, i have seen arguements from other hunters saying that killing them quickly before they get to hand to hand is better. So, u just have to decide how u play your toon and which one works better.
really you do marksmanship for 31, and then i say mix it up between Beast mastery and survival... and wtf? why are you people getting +hp to your pets when your marksmanship spec'd. get +AoH 20% bonus is very very very nice.

im going to have to go with beast mastery because the ranger doenst have to take hits from the enemy there fore keeping it in combat longer

All MMO's have grinds. If you don't like to Grind then MMO's are not for you.
This a mix build that i find it quite usefull:

31 talents in Marksmanship is a must..... the rest it depends on your play style
i used 20 on survivle for the traps bonus. Frost trap is a gr8 way to turn the battle upside down.

but survival is where the end game pvp is at.
it depends on the style that you play
ex) hard hitter .... go with markmanship
well if you want to survive thats obvious
beast training if your planning on not taking hits
actually i spend a lot of m time in melee. my attacks do much more damage in melee than in ranged. almost double actually.
