Since SWG I have played every beta, every game without a system of Harvesting and a open merchant like SWG. I hate node harving. I loved searching the open world for a private vendor with great product that I could use or resell. Most games have preset node locations and a universal broker that cheapen this element for us pioneering harvesters or merchants.
Someone please incorporate a SWG type Harv/Economy!
This was my favorite element in any MMO, and I've played almost all of them.
Give me something to play for!

Most MMOs employ the simplest possible systems for crafting. Gated advancement, noded resources, Auction House.
There will never be another game with the same resource management, crafting or merchant system like SWG again. Ive resigned myself to that fact and have begun moving on.
You should prepare yourself to do the same.

SWG is still the only game that made crafting and harvesting so fun that I maxxed out my crafting skills. Even in WoW where you got free stat bonuses from crafting/harvesting, I barely did the minimum just to get the stats.
I would love to see another game with the resource shifts and in depth crafting like SWG had.
Maybe it's a pipedream...but if any game incorporated this into their system I'd be all over it. I'd even become the Merchant/harvesting tycoon I was on Bloodfin on a Hello Kitty server.
Why do no developers realize the value of this ingame?
Is there no option to running aroung killing things for quests any more? Senseless craft grinding, waiting and competing for a harv node to pop is not my bag.
I also really miss scouring far flung planets for a baby mob to tame as a pet. I can't even count the hours i spent on this in SWG and loved it.
Please MMO gods listen!
Final Fantasy XIV is planning to introduce systems like these in their game. Gathering classes so far are Miner, Fisher, Botanist and Shepherd. Each works differently and they're not just some "professions" you do alongside combat, but actual careers that affect the economy (and make you rich at the same time).
Although the game is still quite a themepark, that feature is indeed very sandboxish.
Hahahaha, you just compared FFIV to SWG.

Now that would be silly, considering FFIV came out almost 20 years ago.
I'm just saying to not give up, because there might be something on the horizon to look forward to.
I appreciate the comments.
I just wish any game saw the value in this aspect of the game we're speaking of.
IMHO I don't think any game could do it like SWG, but come on at least come close. The player made cities are another whole concept.
I've played every game including the newer sandbox games like Mortal and Craft of Gods and there's nothing!
Throw me a friggin bone here!

BTW I was an early friggin jedi way before the supposed upgrade and I still focused on the harvesting/merchant aspect of SWG!
Give us some economic love!
The game that probably fills the crafting void better then any other game I have tried since SWG pre-NGE is EVE Online. And, with the next free expansion it looks to become more so in that you will (as I read it) have a chance to do some off-line material gathering for you crafting needs. The nice thing I had found with EVE is that the number of items of use you can craft is pretty extensive. While I am currently not active in EVE at the moment, it is still one of my top 2 crafting MMO's with a really good market system.
Let's party like it is 1863!
I would recommend you runescape, even thou I am not sure what SWG means, Runescape has not the best graphics if you compare them to most high end games, nonetheless there are many "merchant clans" and you can always "merchant" by yourself if your wise enought by looking at the Grand Exchange Chart that they offer on how the economy is doing across runescape. Aside that, harvesting system is one of its kind, it has farming, mining, fishing, herblore, crafting, rune crafting ( for magic ) etc.. Going back to harvesting, to give you an example you kill a dragon and you get its hide and dragon bones which bot sell for 8000 coins for both, you can use the hide to craft and lvl up your crafting or use the bones to train your prayer and prayer gives you a lot of attributes.. nonetheless I am not going to far into detail as I am sure most peopple would disagree with me, best of luck,
Pie < Face < Me
I hear what youre saying though. Theres always hope.
@OP: Im sure theres plenty of Devs out there that know just how good it was, but they need to rework it so that it looks unique and then build the rest of a game around it.

It completely baffles me why no game has tried to implement similar crafting, gathering and harvesting to that of the SWG systems yet. So many people that post here, regardless of whether their opinion is that SWG was broken from the beginning or they're vets that are still rabid over the NGE, nearly everyone seems to agree that those systems were the best that have been in a game to date.
