I miss crafting in UO, quite frankly. Fishing was great. Crafting was great. Most importantly, I didn't have to put in 40+ hours on another character to get the necessary items and reagents to do so. Not that I'm much of a pacifist- I do enjoy beating up on monsters- BUT, is there another game out there with a fully developed crafting system and an active economy to support it?

Everquest 2 has decent and interesting crafting mechanisms.
Crafting is some sort of a minigame and a lot of items are actually needed.
Vanguard has a very good crafting system.

If you're looking for crafting as a viable ingame professionor advancement path, EVE Online and Fallen Earth both offer crafting/resource systems that are similar to UO in several ways
- You can play a Crafter as a profession as opposed to being forced to play a Crafter Who Kills Things To Level as a profession.
- Most loot is usable in some way, even if it is just to salvage/refine it down to needed materials
- Even good created by a low level crafter have use and value.
- You can take any and all crafting/gathering skills that you want

LotRO also has a very impressive crafting system, and at least until you reach the Moria expansion material, the best equipment is always crafted.
eq2 has terrible crafting.
it's pretty much universally agreed that SWG had the best crafting.
out of recent stuff, Fallen Earth has excellent crafting.
I think EVE has excellent crafting as well, but I think EVE is so different from everything else that it needs to have it's own genre

If you are really, really into crafting, check out "A tale in the desert" - it used to have a 24h trial, probably still does if it's still running.
It's pretty much 100% crafting, and not the lame push a button and wait a few seconds kind of crafting
The difference is that the crafting in most mmos is about the end result of each 'click', whereas in atitd, the big thing is that you have to do the crafting yourself.
For instance, to make ropes or twines, you have to plant some flax seeds, go around watering them while they grow, collecting seeds you find, then harvesting the flax, and pop it in water so that it rots a bit, then pop that into a machine to extract the fibers, which you then have to put in another machine.. pretty much what you'd have had to do in real life in that time.
One of the things I recall having to do was make a device to properly plane wood for boards.. so it went: here's a slab of iron.. here's a mallet.. now pound away til it's a decent 'blade' shape. The effectiveness of the blade depended on how close you got to the right shape, and such.

I agree. Though as a very casual MMO player, the completely open gameplay is a bit overwelming. It's all about personal preference. Most of the EVE devotees love the lack of a guiding force through the game.
LotRO requires you to spend in-game coin to buy materials from vendors to craft. And not cheap things either. Basically, you can't level your crafting unless you make enough in-game coin to pay to craft each item. And that's in addition to gathering raw materials.
That was the worst crafting I've ever encountered in an MMO. If you like to pursue crafting as actively (or more) as you adventure, then LotRO will sorely disappoint.

Fallen earth is very fun crafting I also loved asheorn call 1's crafting was fun as well.
I got back to warhammer online just because of the talisman making system.It was the best crafting i have ever seen.You get the ingredients from a corpse by scavenging and they have degrees to like green or purple.You put the in order in the scheme
then you start it.It makes a talisman which was made by combining any thing you want
I am sure you would enjoy crafting in Final Fantasy XIV. You can start the game as a crafter/gatherer, and don't need to use any combat to clear the game. Quests have been designed for you to do, and the crafting process is quite interactive. There's a lot of player interaction as well, since you can offer your services to make some money and sell your items on the auction house.
You can also dye the equipment you make (if you choose to make equipment) and attach different runes to it to customize your products.
Actually EQ2 has a good crafting system.The issue with EQ2 happened right after the first xpac.Before that crafting was dynamic and more importantly it was useful for all classes.
Then the weapons and armor become practically useless killing a number of crafting classes.The alchemist and provisioner(cook) are still useful to some degree .Rest classes are basically only useful for spell making and few adornments now.
SWG of the past was the best IMHO.It was the solo reason i played SWG when it launched.The combat was horribly boring and game was buggy.
But everything broke in SWG and was player made.Means you needed crafting to exist in that game.Also it was NOT boring.I enjoyed experimenting to make my guns .You would look for the best experimental rating items to boost it and would pay thru yu nose for rare minerals(the mineral shifting and mining was second to none and great fun ) that spawned a year ago which had right property for that particular weapon(each weapon used different kind of minerals - another cool feature).
Then once you got the right blueprint you then go to the factory and make copies of it for sale!
Then for the uber hunter you would put in enhancers called krayt tissue and have the weapon sliced.Each slicing got different results and the best one sold for a fortune .
Such weapons you auction either in the city or if it is super good on forums.
Crafting in MMOs generally follows one of several models.
Either (a) - crafting is relatively easy to level, and practically every remotely serious player has maxed out craft skills on at least one character. Since there are so many crafters around, crafted gear is relatively easy to obtain. Crafters become annoyed that they aren't making any profit, so the game typically introduces a PvE element with either rare recipes or components only attainable from raid drops. So any serious crafter ends up having to do lots of PvE in order to differentiate themselves from all the other max level crafters. That's the model followed by WoW.
Or (b) there's something that stops most people from maxing their crafting. This would typically involved putting some sort of grind into crafting that's so long and laborious that most people simply give up due to sheer boredom. For example, the user may need to repeat the same mindless mini-game thousands of times, in order to raise his crafting skills (I'm looking at you Everquest II). Another example is Lord of the Rings Online, where the time-sink is in gathering large amounts of material in order to craft second rate items, in order to get to "Mastery", at which point the good stuff becomes available (but by then, your character has probably outlevelled the uber-crafted gear, so the craft skills are most useful for twinking alts).
A third option is shown in Ryzom, where the best crafted gear is often made using secret recipes, discovered by experimentation, and kept as jealous secrets by the top crafters. So the grind is, in a sense, based on how long a crafter spends gathering materials and experimenting. However, that only works because hardly anyone plays Ryzom. If the game had a decent following, the best recipes would inevitably become widely published, and the whole experimentation system would just become a case of "look it up on the net".
It's basically a case of name your poison. I haven't really looked at EvE or SwG, but I haven't seen any crafting system that I'd consider to be either fun or to require anything resembling skill. Most of them amount to a bunch of "top crafters" feeling smug because they can do lots because they've been grinding for horrendous amounts of time.

I would say Wurm Online pure crafting game, lack animations but but got ok environment.
You build farms, houses, boats weapons, food, and live like a surviver, a bit geeky game though with very steep learning curve, but have a free capped server, and the best crafting system i have encountered
