Blizzard layoffs?

RaenzRaenz Member UncommonPosts: 81

I had heard just today, that Blizzard has laid a nice chunk of their content creators(WoW?) off.  Supposedly mandated by Vivendi.

Anyone else hear of this?

I don't know how you got your information so opposite to the truth, but this very site posted this news article, hope it clears the matter up for you.

Blizzard Entertainment has just updated their official company site and appears to have a TON of job openings for everything from Database Admins, Game Designers, Web Designers to Customer Support Lead.

Well to be honest, that doesn't necessarily mean there weren't any lay-offs...the job openings could be the result of lay-offs. ;)

No need to get all uppity about it bro.

I have a friend who's friend got laid off from Blizzard.  So I asked the question..no biggie.  Now it could be a firing, and a disgruntled employee just spreading a nasty rumor??

I thought that's what this forum was all about?

BTW: Just because a compnay with over 100 employees hires some new folks, doesn't mean they didn't lay a few folks off in a different area.

I think you misread my tone, easily done since this is nothing but static words with no emotional connotation, unless italics are your friend.  I was more joking with the last poster because of the technicality he brought up, it was in sillyness, not in arrogance.

I only refer to a news article on this site of course, I'm not exactly insider information.

i know about the hirings of blizzard from the news, but they might be laying off content folks- thats economical, you dont need a full team doing that shit around the clock....but they made so much money maybe there should be some super full time squad of content devs

    ::speculation::

Well, in my opinion the tone of that article doesn't suggest they layed off people, more like they are looking for more people, maybe to keep WoW hot or something.

Yeah I figured as much.  I realize how hard it is to convey tone in a forum post. image

Hehe.  Good writing will always impose a conation of the person's feelings towards the subject.  Perhaps it just imposed the wrong one.  Know statistically WoW, (Although I personally distate the game to no end),  has been picking up a large number of new subscribers.  In order for a company to be able to do well in the MMORPG market they have to have new ppl putting up new stuff all of the time.  When companies like EQ put off a large number of their GM's people started leaving the game due to the lack of content.  This may be the same thing... but what do I know :p.  This is just a guess.  Facts point both ways, but it's probably just related to the same old thing... $$$

or maybe the article is just slick marketing to cover the layoffs, since bliz is in way over their heads with wow

It's 100% true.  Although they stand to have 2 million WoW subscriptions worldwide, somehow Blizzard execs felt the need to do layoffs, including several very long-term development  people -mostly veteran artists and programmers, and even the audio director who was with them since the beginninng.   They seem to be steering the management in some very strange and conflicting directions of late.    The expectations for working overtime have increased, people are being let go with no explanation given to anyone, and the compensation is just not what it should be.

Since the Feb layoffs more people are leaving at a steady rate, and who could blame them?  I'm afraid the Blizzard we all used to know and love is going, going....
