A game set in or based on Norse Mythology?

Rockgod99Rockgod99 Member Posts: 4,640

I recently started getting into Norse Mythology and I'm wondering if theres a game thats based on it.

I would play any kind of mmo, f2p, p2p, mmo rts/fps. I just love the  Norse myths. Vikings, three plains, giants, Odin/thor/loki, serpents, valkeries.

If there isnt one I wonder why that is.

Edit: Shit!!! wrong forum. place this in LFgame please :)

Edit2: im aware that DAoC borrowed some from Norse myths with Midgard and what not but im looking for a bit more.

Dark Age of Camelot, had a whole Norse faction, Midgard. Was very cool, the only faction I ever played actually. But the game is showing its age a bit.

For what its worth, I am there with you. I am a total nut for all things VIking Age, and would love a newer game set in the era, historical or fantasy based. I am not sure there is a broad enough market to ever see it happen, but it cant stop me from hoping.

Both LoTR and Conan are both infleunced to a certain extent by Norse mythology, but no MMO is purely based upon it. Only game I can recall which was fairly heavily influenced by Norse mythology was Loki, but that's and SPRPG.

    I don't understand why.

The races alone and the three planes would be a great setting for a mmo.

Giants, Gods, Valkerie, Dwarves, undead, Dark/Light Elves, Humans (Vikings), serpents.

Im gonna keep googling hopefully ill come across something.

There probably aren't too many fantasy mmo's that don't have some element of norse myth like darves or elves.  A new game that's entirely based on it would be interesting--something that isn't based on a popular franchise or novel but on the nine worlds of Yggdrasil with their characteristics and beings.  Lots of possible content although much would already be familiar to fantasy gamers.

    That's true.

I was just hoping to immerse myself more into Norse myths by playing a game set in it or heavily based on it.

Im doing a lot of reading on Norse and even started getting into Melodic Death metal (viking metal).

A mmo based on it was my next step and maybe even some graphic novels.

Wehn i get into something i like to fully immerse myself in the topic across multiple hobbies of mine.

Death metal doesn't have much to do with the Norse mythology, Black metal is more closely associated. And Burzum (lol) just released a new album.

But I can see a company doing it at some point, the IP is free and the lore part is done.

There was an MMO in the works once upon a time...  Midgard or Midgard Online.   Tho it was a Funcom project and quite a few people don't like the company.   It was canned back in 2001 or around then, I saw the website once before it was taken down.

DAoC Midgard.. is kind of fun if you haven't really played through it.

Yeah i'm sure someone will do it sooner or later.

On the music thing Amon Amarth is considered Melodic death metal and basically sing about Norse 100% of the time. your right though mostly its black metal.

Amon Amarth is easier on my ears (im getting old).

I can totally see where your coming from, ever since i played Midgard in DAoC Ive been a Norse- nut myself and choose that kind of RPG char whenever theres the option.

Its not an mmo but If you wanna see some vikings rippin it up on the Battle field I recommend Mount and blade warband to you, has got a Norse faction, pretty fun and the online multiplayer is good too. Currently there is a community which builds a online campaign with different factions, game masters and a big conquest map, all for Warband, you can play norse there too.

There is a single player game based exclusively on Norse mythology.  It is called Rune.  The graphics are a bit outdated but still playable.  Loki comes back and tries to take over the world of man.. something like that.  You have to stop him and even sacrifice a part of yourself to become a demi-god in order to do so.  Very underrated title when it was released in my opinion.  The multiplayer was fun as hell.  It's not a MMO, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.

It has the type of free-form melee combat that I'd love to see in a MMO.  I don't know why more MMO's don't look at games like this.

Haven't ran into one yet, but Age of Conan has lots of those elements, I guess. I can recommend you a band to listen to, though, which is Finntroll. Great folk metal, straight from the north.

Only if you have the time bro. If not its cool.

WoW has a lot of Norse flavored content in the latest expansion.  You have to have a fairly high-level character to get to Northrend and the Howling Fjord, but some of the quests are really well done and would be fun for anyone who appreciates the mythology behind it.  The Nordic themed environments and the music are very nice too.

The entire world of Ragnarok Online is based on Norse mythology. Even it's name is from Norse mythology...

I honestly don't see why people are all "OMG it's anime! That ruins the whole game!" At least it looks better than 90% of games.
