Anyone ever thought of doing a MMO based on history... such as 18th century, or 19th century westerns? or early 20th century WW1 or 2? I personally think a western would be interesting.. but then WW1 era could be fun as well..

DAoC was like that, with a fair amount of fiction tied into it but it was based on supposed history.
Whether the King Arthur thing was fiction or not.
Trench warfare MMO sounds great.
In the list is a mmo based on WW2.
It's an mmofps. Not knocking it, I like mmofps' and it was good last I played it, though I don't know how healthy the population is atm.
I'd like to see an mmo* set during the Napoleonic era.

Robin Hood the MMO!
I wish KOEI was a MMORPG developer then we would see some awesome historical mmorpg's. Anyone ever remember this company? They made my favorite SNES games such as Liberty Or Death, New Horizons, Unchartered Waters, Inindo.........I suggest if you have not played these titles yet for SNES then you get these roms on your pc with the emulator, my favorite was inindo and new horizons but also loved Liberty or death.
I would love to see some historical mmo type games.
That would work too, ...wait... historical?!? ^_^ But still... would make for a good theme, and not a restricted ip but anyone could do it without needing permission.
But gotta love the archery, the great-great-grandfather to the thermonuclear-tipped-intercontinental-ballistic-missile!

heh they are still around. . I just bought Romance of the Three Kindoms XI, I have not played the series since 3. . but the new one is good!
I would love to see a Western MMO for sure!
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
Sweet, yeah I played all the Romance series but my favs are still listed above. Try inindo for snes you will love the hell out of it, very fun and addicting, so was new horizons.................Man the memories.
I have a western MMO idea, one that would make it really good but I am not a developer to make or get started with such a game.
Definately the Napoleanic era.. pretty much my favourite time period... closest I saw was Pirates of the Burning Sea, and after hearing the devs talking about how they were tired of fiction.. I was ... very disappointed when I saw pics of the flying duchman and ghosts...
But overall, that period has alot to it, being a fan of both C.S. Forester and Patrick O'Brian's works, I'd be pretty damn psyched if that happened with a decent developer.
I am hopeful that Red Dead Redemption for the PS3 and 360 does very well. I have it on pre-order.
If this game is successful in the open world console department and is based off the western era, then it may just open up some room for a big developer / company to take note and make a true MMORPG/MMOFPS based off the era.
We can keep our fingers crossed. This is the best way I can see to support this idea.
Even though it is a console, if it hits really BIG, they will see there is a market for something besides post apocolyptic and fantasy MMO's.
I would love an mmorpg based in the Americas during the Colonial period. This period would lend itself well for a wide variety of classes and factions. You'd have the British, French, Native Americans, and Colonists. If you set it before the revolutionary war, you could set the main war between the British and French with the Natives and Colonists being more neutral, but can take up arms for either side. You could really generate a decent metagame of capture the territory with battles over Forts, Ports and Towns, and even add additional support for your faction if you have a supply chain established (such as owning neighboring forts, towns, and ports).
Yes, you'd have to take some liberties with the actual histroy, but as long as it's basically period correct with some interesting concepts, it would be a game I would be interested in.
The Napoleanic area would make for a really nice mmorpg. Hell, I'm a little surprised that there hasn't been a push for someone to develop a mmorpg based upon the Temeraire series. Ok, adding dragons to the Napoleanic area isn't entirely "historical", but I do think that it would make for an interesting mmorpg setting.
I've always throught a crime solving, Sherlock Holmes type mmo could be fun, set in late 19th century England.

Did they really, Zerakus? When it launched, we didn't have any form of broadband in my area. When they ran a DSL line out here, first thing I did was look into where PotBS was, and I saw videos of bright florescent Christmas bulbs floating around a toilet bowl... hehe, so I passed. PotC was a pass of course. Only thing passing the time atm is SL, there are a couple sims devoted to that general era, with tall ship PvP battles and land battles. But a committed game would just be a jaw dropper imo.
Yep, the era has a lot to offer, even on a global scale. Not only would it be attractive to us US players, but I think the Europeans would be overwhelmed by it, if done right.

When I mentioned the 18th century the first thing that came to mind was pre-revolutionary colonial days.. I too thought that could have alot of potential.. I would make it a PvE and PvP game where both can coexist at the same time. Civil War Era could be the same way.. I think a sandbox Western could be interesting, if you allow some themepark options with it.. I guess Im just getting tired of the fantasy stuff, and sci-fi has been poorly done..
