MMORPG.com's Adam Tingle sets out on his sixth week of exploration in EVE Online as he writes about this adventures, good and bad, coming into the game for the first time.
Week six had all the hallmarks of being a difficult and disastrous week. I start proceedings in a void, no objectives, goals or ambitious; I merely aimlessly floated around space looking for purpose; a nomad. The survival I had been so desperately clinging to was ebbing away at every second and my will to continue with the world of New Eden was simply nonexistent; I had been beaten, drained, without hope. The learning curve of Eve Online is more like a sheer cliff face- the desire to continue is seemingly beaten into submission. It was safe to assume that this was a low moment for me.
Since my last week of adventure, nothing much had changed. I had indulged in minor piracy, found myself mining and simply waiting on an Eve University application. By the middle of my sixth week I had only received a mail alluding to the fact that I may soon be accepted. The will to simply log on each day was becoming difficult, I had no purpose; what was I to do?

More interesting to read than the previous weeks. Looking forward to week seven.

This guy really loves missions.
For those of us that have been in this genre for a while its no secret that a few friends playing along side you can make an even horrid game enjoyable.
Not saying Eve is horrid in anyway, what im saying is that this guy (being a mmo guy) should have known this already.
His Eve life has been a bore because he had noone to hang with, no one to look up to to give him an idea of his progression path, to cut those boring moments with meaningless chatter and ribbing.
As a solo player with no idea of mechanics how are you supposed to know what to train for long term?
While im not really into high sec mission corps atleast they helped the Op to have sometype of goal and I guess Gallente BCs are a decent enough goal for a mission/explorer guy.
Looks like he's going to be a wormhole guy, Since he's clearly stuck on the pve aspects of Eve i guess thats a good choice.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
ahh I too recall my starting days when I bumbled around trying out everything, once I found my first corp the game really came together for me and I had a blast, sadly now my RL time cuts into my gamae time so I tend to log in and find a few lurkers simply mining and no mission running going on.
Times like this you realise you need to seek out a new corp, but I am with my corp for random chats, I spend my time plotting my way to my first 500 Million ISK (i got it then spent it!)
Surprised you didnt try the Sister of Eve Story Arcs, but I am sure you will get into that at some point and try it out. I spend my time fulifilling levels of certificates and chasing my short term goals (My Long term is to beat Chribba, but alas I fear I never will )

This is the best thing that could have happened to him. Joining a low sec or 0.0 corp would not have been in his best option, not that it can't work out but the odds are against you at this point. As long as his corp stays out of those STUPID high sec war decs he should be fine.
EvE is one game that has many demensions. After he spends some time here if he wants to move on to low sec gameplay then he has the skill and ISK to do so.
Good Luck!
I wouldnt call the guy a slacker he was training into a mining barge for a bit.
I remember first playing I was in a Frig and Cruiser the entire time then moved to a AF (first 6-8 months). To this day my most used ships are a Vexor and Ishkur lol.
Not everyone rushes to big ships.

The first response with that long list of skills was probably the reason why the writer had a hard time finding a corp to join. He obviously doesn't want people to tell him exactly what to do. I would have to agree, the more successful EVE players tend to go out of their own way to figure it out for themselves.
His first 6 weeks were very similar to my 6 weeks as I went from corp to corp, figuring what I want to do with myself and how I was going to do it, bumbling around etc.
I imagine everyone else has had similarities with their first 6 weeks as well?
Yes. My first weeks were spent trying to digest as much as I could. I got overloaded with info as well as having some of the same issues the OP had in his earlier posts. One day i was flying around bored with nothing to do and then BAM!!! I realized I could do anything I wanted. That was the turning point. It seems to be the breaking point of the game. Those who don't make it beyond this point most likely wont stay in New Eden.
These are fun to read.
I feel like I'm reading the stories of all new players to eve... The game truly does get way better once you have found a corp that fits well and has friendly people.
Looking forward to the next edition.
WTF podded again?
To be fair, he had joined corps previously and they just weren't a good fit. I can understand getting discouraged when that happens. Especially being new to the game and not having a clear sense of direction, it's easy to think the small sample represents the whole game population.
At any rate, glad he found a corp that seems to fit his current play style. I think this article was one of the better in the series so far and served to validate some of the advice that had been dispensed in previous article comments. I'm really curious to see how week 2 in the new corp (and possibly some WH exploration) works out for him.

Nice read. I'm glad the OP finally got into a nice group of people to fly with. Flying with a group adds a lot to the enjoyment of the game, specially at first, when you are still learning about eve. Later, with some experience under your belt a player can play solo and still enjoy the game a lot, but during the learning stages, joining a good corp is definitely the way to go.
Played: UO, SWG, TR, WoW, AoC, EvE

Interested in: JGE, LotR, TSW
That skill list is about as much fun as another hole in the head, not to mention the 4.5 million isk books he'd be having to buy without a single improved combat/mining or ship skill.
Sure, on an alt, doing all learning skills first is the "optimal" course of action, but for a newbie trying to learn the game, it'd bore them to death (and it does).
TL;DR optimization

I think Cosy meant well. The player is obviously not a noob to MMOs and while it is not necessary to follow a list of skills, I believe Cosy is saying he should have done some research to maximize his skill progression some. EveMon will even do it for you. As other people mentioned though, its never too late and as long as he is having fun it doesnt matter. Know a lot of veteran players who started some of their late learning skills after a few years.

I agree with a skill list but not with drake remark. There are different approaches to PvE, Drake is not the only nor the best (if there is the best) option out there.
Dude i've been playing three years and for the first year and a half I was a completely lost moron when it came to the game.
Even with Evemon i was switching skills back and forth, I wouldnt take any super long skills and my head was always turned toward the big shiney new toy whenever a patch released.
Heh... I remember first joining a real hardcore pvp corp and I had players in the corp that were about 5 months old that could fly better ships than me (BC's, HACs, BS t2 fitted).
Looking back i wish i had someone like cosy to sit my ass down and just give me a list of skills and say dont train anything else fucker!!!!!!!!!!!!!
haha

Good read. Does it really take weeks to get accepted into Eve University?
It was around a week for me. It might be better now that the queue is ordered based on your application date, rather than total time spent online in the queue.

Congrats! You have found yourself a corp, people you can relate with. Its a wonderful thing to have buddies. I don't know what I could have done in EVE without them. There is nothing more you need to research yourself when you have buddies. Now you can learn from each other and tackle problems together instead of thinking all by yourself. From now on it should be smooth sailing. The only problem I can see is creation of internal unrest in your corp. Or external invasions. Speaking of internal problems. My corp once had a couple and one day one guy decided to flirt (lol cyber flirt) with the girl and then the girls boy friend got mad and decided to shoot the other guy and the guy that flirted was kicked out of the corp. Guess what happened? The guy that was kicked decided to hire mercenaries and attack out corp. Thats how fun can start, although the start wasn't funny but the battles that happened out of it was a blast.
This guy could make going to the toilet and watching it sliding into oblivion sound interesting and entertaining with his writing. Glad you enjoyed it though.
15 jumps to get somewhere? How long did that take? How many hours do you sit and play on a session? How many of these missions were carbon copies of each other? Is this a glorified chat program with a graphical interface? Did you follow the standard spreadsheet when creating your character so you can have said ship within said time? These questions are on new players minds.

How long does it take to train 26 "learning" skills before you can even do anything?!! I'm guessing weeks! Holy wasted time and effort batman. At least you are paying your subscription while you wait, that's a good thing at least.
