Has anyone played Age of Conan?

Hi

I'm new here but I've been a MMO player since Ultima Online.

I was at one time a GM for UO.

I've been a beta tester on many MMOs, including, Asheron's Call,  (the final night of AC beta was one of the great gaming experiences) AC2, Everquest 2, WOW,  Lord of the Rings Online,  WAR, and  Age of Conan.

I ran a search on this forum for “Age of Conan” and “Aoc” and got no hits at all.

As I said I beta tested AoC and played it for a shot time after release.

I quit because my computer couldn’t stand the strain (even though it would generate over 120fps in WOW) and it still had a lot of bugs.

A few weeks ago prompted by the coming expansion and my lose of interest in  Aion I decided to give it another try.  I now have a new Falcon Northwest computer that will run anything at max settings and not even get warm.

What a difference!

The game runs fantastic, I have had no bugs, no lag, and no quest problems.

I have to say that in my opinion (everyone has one) this is the best MMO on the market at the present time.  I haven’t played them all but I have played a lot of them.

It certainly has the most realistic world and the best graphics.

It has what I think is at least one of the best character generation engines, it’s nice to not see a hundred characters that look just like mine.

The combat system is far and away the most fun.

I’m not even sure how they make a real time combat system where you control every swing and shot work on line but it does.  Lots of blood and gore great animations and death action and the world is pretty big and now will get bigger.

Well I’m waiting right now for the UPS truck with my copy of the new Asian area expansion, “Rise of the God Slayer” (that’s why I have time to sit around and bore everyone) but as soon as it gets here I’m going to create a new character and start all over.

If anyone has never given AoC a try I really think you would be in for a surprise and if you tried it back when it first come out, it’s worth another look.  The game is really a lot of fun.

Yes have bought and played when it was released, not a bad game, but I aint into any type of fantasy anymore, so that's my only reason of not playing it.

Everyone thinks that AoC is the "best MMO out there" for a few days. And then they get out of Tortage...

And then they realize that you have to go through Tortage for EVERY character you make...

And then they realize that they'll be stuck in ugly, bland leather armor for the next 70+ levels...

Bah....Debbie Downer. It is true that you have to go through Tortage with every new toon but the other part is not true. Some of the armor sets are cool. in my 60s with a Barb I had an awesome helmet, cool cloak that looked like layers of fur pelts, and a jerkin that looked pretty awesome.

There is tons of good stuff after Tortage with all that has been added since launch. I actually do think this has shaped up to be one the better MMOs out there and I have more than 1 character in the 70-80 range with a couple more in the 40 ish range and two new asian characters in Tortage. I can plow through tortage quckly enough and alter leveling between White Sands, the Underhalls, and The Acheron Ruins to keep it a little fresh.

I do wish they would had a option to skip Tortage after toon 2 or give an alt starting area but that is where my complaints end for this game these days. The rest is great, especially compared to what else is out there.

I don't like the world design because it is loading screens all the time, so it doesn't feel like a world but rather a bunch of game levels. I tried getting back into it a few months ago and I just couldn't stand how it didn't feel like a world. They need seamless zone transition like WoW.

  • augustgraceaugustgrace Member UncommonPosts: 628

When you talk to your trainer in tortage there is a dialogue option to skip ahead if you want.  You just have to pay attention to the dialogue rather than clicking through it as fast as possible.

There wasn't any option to do that back when I played.

Also, it's nice to hear that the armor *might* have improved in looks and diversity. When I played it was all about drab colors and boring design's that didn't make me feel like I was in the "Conan" world at all.

Is anyone else automatically suspicious of posts like the OP?  It has all the signs of a stereotypical marketing 'shill' post and of a viral ad for the game.

On the other hand it looks so sterotypical and obvious that it might really be a 'well meaning' actual person posting this without realizing what it looks like to people who are 'Internet savvy' and 'Internet cynical'. :)

My thoughts exactly. But after resubbing about a month ago and enjoying it more than I ever have... Personally I would have to agree that it is one of the better mmo's on the market right now. Like any game, you could find things wrong with it, (not a fan of heavy instancing) but I have enjoyed myself nonetheless Posted from my phone so hopefully this is halfway coherent.

I agree Age of Conan is best mmo out right now.  The combat is just so brutal and bloody...the soundtrack to the game is best of all time.--  I cannot overemphasize the importance of a good soundtrack and this games soundtrack is worthy of an Academy Award Oscar.    Graphics in this game are outstanding.  Horse mounts are very realistic looking.  The terrain in this game is incredible...so many places to hide and sneak about...very realistic

There are quests to take you from lvl 1 all the way to lvl cap at 80.- u can solo all the way if you wish.    The leveling is harder than WoW only because the Aggro in AoC is crazy at times, I mean really whacked., lol.   But the aggro is intentional, the Devs have stated as such.  You have to be careful what you doing in age of conan or you going to aggro too much and die.     I play both mmo's and they both fantastic games

I love AoC for the brutality of it all...and love WoW for the solid game experience from Blizzard adn they offer so much in game to keep you busy.

I hit max level in this game early and was bored at release. Now my roommate plays and trust me, there are plenty of bugs. play a HoX and change forms. Your weapon will hover around like your an Evil Weapon in FFXI

It would really depend on how you told me you liked Fords.   If you acted like a salesman I would be likely to assume that you really did work for Ford.

The OP starts out by trying to establish his credential as 'one of us', 'know what I am talking about'  by tellign us that he was a GM and a fequent beta tester.  Then he tells us how he originally did not believe in the product for the same reasons that any of us would have.  Establishing a rapport with us, he then tells us that he recently tried the product and it is great  and we should try it.

It's a complete stranger with whom we never had any contact, telling us about a wonderful product that we will like because we are just like him.

Maybe people really talk like that after years of bombardment by ads and infomercialsbut the cynic in me just does not want to believe that.

Be wary over people badmouthing AoC that have not played it in 2010 (since February to be exact)

It's simply a great game now that almost every issue with it was fixed/resolved, I can easily say with confidence that its one of the top 5 (I'd even put it in the top 3) MMO's to play right now, and it just got better with the new expansion that has an alternate level 1-20 zone for those tortage bashers.

Just like being suspicious of the knee jerk reactions that a positive post gets from those who don't like the game?

Hey, I played a Guardian to lvl 60? since the beginning. What made me stop playing is weak end game content and PvP Castle seiges. I expected PvP to be like Aion. Nightly fort raids, huge clashs of players battling over forts. Sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. WHen I played. No one was doing anything at all. Just 2 guild leaders building "their" castles. THe only input the guild members could make was supply resources. I was very disappointed in the end. We dont even have player housing in a village. Doesnt feel like my village. But maybe one persons village in an entire guild. Has any of that changed at all? Aion sure is exciting for those reasons.

I am pretty sure this is not true. . the new area starts with level 20 quests and you still have to do tortage.  Please do correct me if I am wrong.  It is actually Tortage that keeps my from playing again.

    EDIT:  From their website

    New content, new experiences!

You can now start out as a Khitan and head straight to Khitai after your time on Tortage Island is over.

It is true. Any player will still have to suffer through the 6 hours of Tortage with all his characters. They did add more stuff for it however.

The first new zone is lvl 20-40.

I should say that Tortage was great.  What happened the me is I made a Stygian at release.  I hated the sandy barren look.   If I start as another race will I start somewhere else?  Please tell me it is true! :P

I agree, the music in the Cimmerian regions is top rated, simply among the best I've heard in any MMO or single player game I've played. I couldn't care less though for the music in the Stygian regions, not my taste maybe.

I heard the music in Khitain is good too, will see when I get there.

Lol. Maybe you're right. It's certainly a good thing not to let yourself get swept away in the tides of hype (which doesnt mean one has to be a burnt out cynic, people can still be enthusiastic about stuff), especially when it comes to games and the promises companies seem to throw around.

On the other hand, get over it: I could have made a samelike post in slighty different words as the OP, and still meant it as well. And no, I'm not being paid and also no 'fanboi', it's called being enthusiastic image

The original post is clearly a marketing piece and it's not as obvious as some so i don't think Torik deserves any criticism for pointing it out. The fact that some legitimate posters agree with the sentiment of the post is great for AoC but it still doesn't make this kind of thread desirable in my opinion. But I guess the only way to get it closed is start insulting people image

Everyone has an opinion . Apart opinions there are facts too. Lets re-estate truth beneath some of the above sayings:

It certainly has the most realistic world and the best graphics.

Realistic world and whole world divided in instanced squares? Rather the less realistic world out there...Agreed  about the grafix

The combat system is far and away the most fun.

Its fun till your fingers start to hurt after 30-60 mins of fighting(INCLUDING REST TIMES BEETWEEN FIGHTS).You wanna see whats a good combat system with combos that actually works without tiring the player?Try Severance Blade of Darkness its an actio-rpg 12 years old+ and its combat system works better than aoc's... Less tactical than oblivion ,too fast paced encouraging LoLjumpers sprinting around and jumping at same time making combat look ridicoulous.Blocking system sucks needs re-work.Finishing moves are cool and animations are great agreed.

    Hi again

I promise I'm not a shill for the game. LOL

I'm a 71 year old Graphic Designer and Illustrator.

    Also a confirmed computer geek.

I’m mostly retired, that’s why I have the time to spend on MMOs.

I started out playing video games with Intellivision.

    Anyone remember that?

As I said I'm 71 and I haven't had problems with my fingers getting tired.

I'll be honest, I'm looking forward to the new content in the expansion, (I'm installing it right now) but I will probably move on to something else in a few months.  The only games I have played for more then a year straight are Ultima Online and Wow.

I was just surprised that I didn't find anything when I searched for AoC with the search function.  Since then I have figured out that you don’t seem to find anything that you type into the search box at the bottom of the screen.

Well I have to get this installed before I hit the sack, so that it can spend half the night patching.

Hey Mike, welcome to the boards :)

The search function can be a bit iffy here sometimes, so it is all good.

I remember the Intellivision, but our family opted for the Atari 2600 haha.

Judging from your experiences I would think that you will like AoC expansion looks for sure. Hopefully the game will keep you entertained and you find fun and monies worth from it.

    Good Luck!
