Alganon: N3rfed Blog: John Smedley's Never Been to New Orleans

We recently reported on an issue of potential plagiarism with regards to Quest Online's marketing for Alganon. The content in question was a press release issued to announce the re-launch of Alganon, which read quite similarly to a press release issued in 2008 for BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic, prompting Derek Smart to respond and provide his take on the situation. It appears, perhaps, that not everything adds up.
Derek's response made note that the controversial bit of the Alganon press release was actually originally stated by John Smedley at the 2004 SOE Fan Faire in New Orleans. We've since attempted to verify this and have not been able to find much of anything, however, a blog post on the n3rfed blog claims to have contacted John Smedley regarding the aforementioned statement and received this in response:
Um. I've never been to New Orleans. That was the one year I missed it for family reasons
I have no idea of [sic] I ever said that. But given that he's attributing it to me in new orleans I doubt it. Maybe I said it some other year.
As the blog points out, perhaps Smedley did, perhaps Smedley didn't, but the real point here is: where is Derek Smart's source?

he he, fun enought, this makes smedley, a really controversial guy in the mmo scene, to look like the good one.
Even if Smedley had said it orginally, it's the stupidest argument in the world for Derek Smrt to make. He is basically saying he plagiarized not just one quote, but TWO. How dumb does he think we are? If Smrt had any clue, he would have just kept his big mouth shut...but posting self-incriminating rants on Internet message boards has been his MO for almost 2 decades now. It doesn't get any less professional than what we are seeing now.
Why anyone would want to quote Smedley is beyond me. The guy was at the forefront of the biggest mistake in MMO history.
This issue has now reached the point of, "Who cares?"
One thing you can credit Alganon for! The entertainment it lacks in-game it makes up out of game :P
You would have probably been better off not posting this. This is info akin to what would belong in a blog rather than a news posting.
Just leave Derek alone. You are all acting like he peed in your bathwater and molested your kitten. Cut the guy a break. he is a visionary and a great team motivator and one of the nicest most noble people you could ever be lucky enough to meet.

for me, Alganon now just lost all his credibility. Really everything about and around this game became a joke, Mr. Smart is what I call an idiot. It just became one big joke... I think it will only take some time untill they run out of money, I mean who wants even to invest his money in this project??

ah annyway, It will only take some time before we can make a topic in general with: "watch this: leave Derek Smart alone"
Ah well, it actually became a bid pathetic, everything what happened around Alganon became more entertaining then the game itself. Derek Smart has to stop with sitting on forums and websites all day and posting stupid comments. He has no time for that, I thought he had a game to fix.

I'm really dissapointed that MMORPG.com considers this an issue even worth pursuing. If anything, don't do it under the Alganon banner, because you're just hurting a game that is already hurting. If you have problems with Derek Smart's integrity, that's one thing, but don't let the game suffer for his actions/quotes/whatever, unless it is actually directly pertaining to Alganon. Which in this case, it really isn't at this point.
Ultimately though, who the bloody hell cares?
Trust me a lot of people do, all the websites wont be covering this if they didn't.
The game is already beyond rescue and pretty much dead. No point defending it anymore.
Well, he actually has molested my bathwater & peed on my kitten, I took a photo but then he gave it a virus, how I cannpt put into print as it was too depraved an act to describe.
From now on, can mindless crap like this simply be posted in the Aglanon forums? This is all some mind-bogglin plan to keep Alganon on people's radar. They don't care how they get press, just so long as they get some ink.
Please, stop feeding the bad behavior and rewarding him with front-page stories.
Derek aside (really, it works better for me that way), I have really been enjoying Alganon. I've played EQ, EQ2, DAoC, and LOTRO longterm, as well as quite a few others short term, and I have been getting a relaxed, casual kick out of the game. I will say I refused to buy it at release because it was truly horrible, but it has a certain feel to it that I like now that it is being fixed. No, it is not right now at a point to be my next hardcore MMO, but it is easily worth the 20 bucks for just plain goofing around in. Whatever else Derek may have done, he has refocused the dev staff on fixing what is in the game, making it very playable, and now adding some new stuff. I am rooting for the devs there, because they are the most responsive development team I have ever encountered, hands down.
I just wish this kind of thing would quit muddying the water more than it already was. And yes, this whole plagiarism, Smedley said it first thing is a touch embarassing, but I think Derek was trying to say (whether he was right or not) that the terms have been part of the vernacular for awhile. Persoanlly, I would have just left it at letting PR heads roll and stayed silent, but that is me.
A mouthy dev causes this. Negative feedback and trolls on the attack. This is why you keep your mouth shut.
Any press is not better than bad press, instead of causing people to become interested in your game, its caused people to want nothing to do with it, and find ways to sabotage what you could of had.
NEVER ATTACK YOUR FANBASE.
While a lot of people believe that bad press is just as good as any press..IT IS NOT. bad press is bad and these kinds of news articles keep the games on the radar, but does not really help the game even one bit only makes it worse for them, but then again the company that makes there press statements seems to be stealing them...would not be to suprised if they believe bad press is good :P
