Over the last decade there has been a fairly regular flow of decent subscription fantasy MMO's;
1999 - Everquest
2001 - Dark Age of Camelot
2004 - Everquest 2
2004 - World of Warcraft
2007 - Vanguard
2007 - Lord of the Rings Online
2008 - Warhammer Online
I admit alot of them had their quirks, but they were all fairly big budget subscription MMO's.
My question is, what and where are the next big fantasy subscription MMO's and when are they likely to be seen?
I have heard about Guildwars 2, although I am not sure if this fits the same category. I have also heard about Final Fantasy XIV, although this may be more suited to Xbox Live.
Are there likely to be any big developments on the cards, such as EQ3 or DAoC2 or have all the big developers shut up shop during the recession, trying instead to draw money from their existing games?
I know there are other games on the way, such as Star Wars, but it seems to be the fantasy setting I always return to.
Thanksfor any replies and input.

2011 - Guild Wars 2
forsaken world(everywhere but america)
guild wars 2 (everywhere)
world of warcraft (america mostly)
Guild Wars 2 - Supposedly Mid 2011
T.E.R.A. - Same time frame I believe.
Huh, FFXIV is a high end AAA MMO for PC and PS3 currently, not exactly for XBox Live. And currently its looking grim that it'll get a 360 release considering that Microsoft wants subscribers to pay for a gold sub also...rofl
You also left out FFXI.
2009 - Atlantica online, 2010 Troy
What was so decent about Vanguard and Warhammer?
Or did you mean descent as in dropping rapidly?
Next big fantasy MMO... whatever Bethesda is releasing.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
GW2 is an obvious choice.
I don't understand your dismissal of FFXIV either... it's a full open world MMO, no different to any others on the market in terms of being a massively multiplayer game. What makes you think it's suited to XBox Live (ironically the platform it's not launching on)?
FFXIV and GW2 are the next big Fantasy mmos.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
why has nobody mentioned rift? that game looks pretty awesome! i have no idea when it comes it though....probably 2011
The only fantasy MMO releasing in the next year that has caught my eye is Rift. I'm trying not to get too excited about it, but so far it's looking good.
As mentioned already, you left off;
2003 - FFXI
I think TERA, FFIV and GW2 are going to be the big ones. Of those, I think GW2 could be the most popular. I didn't care for GW1, but GW2 looks like it has real potential.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
I think there are a few unannounced fantasy MMOs that could fit the bill -- I'd be willing to bet Turbine is in line to make a Harry Potter MMO -- it's recent take over by Warner Bros. seems to obviate that. Also the rumor that Cryptic is makng the next D&D MMO based on 4e and set in Forgotten Realms is a rumor that won't die.

I heard about Forgotten Realms...that would be a cool premise for an MMO, but I think that Cryptic is planning on doing it. Yikes.
I would say at this point we could include Diablo 3 since they have removed the ability to play LAN. It's kind of a quasi-MMO. Other than that, +1 on GW2. Can't wait for that one.

The next one will probably be the next Final Fantasy and it is for PC as well. Multiplatform is a smart model in today’s market place.
DAOC 2 not going to happen , EQ3 would be multiple years away and since sony is still busy with the Agency.
RIFT:Planes of Telara is suppose to be sometime in 2011
And as mentioned already TERA which is still suppose to release this year.
So in short if you want a Western developed one then you will need to wait for Rift.
And lets not forget about Cryptic’s super secret unannounced Never Winter Nights MMO. I sure they will do another hatchet job and rush the product to market like they did with the other 2. So I guess what your definition of big is if you want to count this.
Since Bethesda is still quite on any MMO(Elder Scrolls another super secret) I would not be holding my breath on something from them in the next 2 years.
I do not consider Guild Wars an MMO but that is just my opinion.
The platform for FF XIV was an error. I knew it was going to release on a games platform and thought it was XBox Live, although PS3 and the others are all the same to me. I just 'personally' do not feel comfortable with an MMO releasing on a console.
Well FFXI is the only other MMO released to console, {now celebrating its 8th anniversary} and by Square-Enix the same developers making FFXIV so rest assured it will be good! I think more MMOs would greatly benefit having console versions, including region free worldwide servers too.
The interwebz already do it multilingual and we manage to get along well enough...rofl
SWTOR is the next major fantasy MMO. It's more or lessWoW with lightsabers.
Also, the new Final Fantasy and whatever the real name of Copernicus is.

heh great post for...MY MMO is the next big thing !
either way dont think there ever were made more MMOs,than now, even if very few really got focus on world/adventure feeling....more instance grinders with no real story *cheers!*
honestly, you can slice it anyway you like. there are countless arguments on the internet and long before the internet about semantic differences between Fantasy and Science Fiction.
To me, fantasy involves magic and (usually) a struggle between good and evil. Sci-fi involves the human relation to possibilities posed by scientific progress.
In short, Fantasy = magic, Sci-Fi = assumption of scientific progress. I am not saying this is the right definition that should be used by the world, but that's the one I use. To some people "fantasy = orcs, sci-fi = aliens". If that's your definition, then SWTOR is definitely sci-fi. There are lots of other definitions.
The plain fact is that the main premise of SWTOR is magic-wielding knights with swords fighting the battle of good versus evil.
The star wars IP does have elements of science-fiction. SWG focused on those elements. SWTOR is focusing on the fantasy elements.
