Hey guys,
I'm interested in running a poll, which asks players of WoW, who was there first? This means who was a follower of the Warcraft Series in the 1990s and moved over to World of Warcraft on its release in 2004. I think the percentage figures would be interesting out of mean 100.
Oh and I came after...

You are missing a third option:
-I was a fan of the Warcraft RTS series from the beginning but it had litle effect on my decision to play WoW since they are such different genres.
I was playing the RTS's when they came out and then moved on to WoW when it released day one.
Yes, the poll does assume that original Warcraft gamers moved immediately over to WoW on its release. Unfortunately I'm unable to edit the poll, otherwise I would have added this.

You do know, the more people you poll the more people you will find who've never heard of Warcraft before WoW. It's rather inevitable.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. All my friends ( twleve people including myself) who used to play diablo, star craft, and the warcraft games could not wait to play Wow at release. Funnily enough only one of them is still playing and he only logs in about once a week. And less than half of them are going back when Cataclysm comes out, so they SAY anyway.

I tried the very first Warcraft RTS, and a few RTS since then, but I really am not an RTS fan. I was getting tired of Everquest, so I bought EQ2 and WoW on the same day. Wasn't as happy with EQ2 as WoW. I used to play a LOT of Diablo 2 though, and I've found WoW to be more like Diablo than Warcraft, in my opinion.

I loved the Warcraft series so my natural progression was to pick up WoW. I haven't played since November 2009 only because I had to take a break. Depending on how far along SWTOR has come when Cataclysm is released, I might pick it back up just to continue the story and see the changes.
Robots will kill you!
Back then me and my gaming buddies were all playing the Warcraft/Starcraft RTS games as well as Diablo. The moment we found out about a Warcraft MMO, we all knew that we'd have no choice but to sink our teeth in it. And we did.
The last of this group quit WOW a little over month ago. No one I know personally will be returning for Cataclysm, so that's that.

I prefer games like Civilization & Command and Conquer to Warcraft and after playing the beta for WoW I haven't touched it since.
So, do you think WoWs reached its tipping point? I know extension packs renew interest in a game, but might WoW have had its day in court?
Matt Harris
I think it got a large infusion from the following:
battle.net players (all 3 games)
Everquest players who were just waiting for something new
After that the snowball just kept on rolling.
um....Adam?

This is just with respect to the people I know that have played the game.
I'm guessing though that there will be a small increase in subs for a few months if that. Then comes the time to watch the king slowly relinquish it's crown. People needn't be concerned with searching for a "WOW Killa", this game is going via natural causes. Eventually.

According to some, it was a two-way tie with Eve.
That is exactly right, and we're not saying NO to save WoW, because it is already a lost cause. We are saying NO to dissuade the next group of greedy suits who decide to emulate Blizzard and Cryptic, etc.
We can prevent some of the future games from spewing this crap, but the sooner we start saying no, the better the results will be.
So - Stand up, pull up your pants, and walk away.

Ok final answer....Eve?

I agree, I would also hazard to guess that the success of WoW will not be repeated again, unless a new disruptive technology allows Blizzard to re-shape WoW on another platform somehow (then it will be history repeating itself). I think there will be big games in the future, but that WoW was a phenomena within a phenomenon and a one off. Everything will even out eventually.

This is a contrast from the group I started playing WoW with who all came to WoW because we were in the same guild in Earth and Beyond and were looking for a new MMORPG to play together. Some of us were fans of previous Blizzard games and others were not but our decision was not really motivated by the fact that it was a Blizzard game.
I would say that many people who started when the game has released have either burned out or gotten bored with the game Many did come back after a break (myself included) but many did not. In my guild I am the only one who played the game since day one. Most others came in at Burning Crusade. It would seem fair to say that the pool of people who would play WoW but who have not tried it yet is very small and is not big enough anymore to replace those who left for good.
This ..
AND..
Forums make up like.. 1% of the gaming community. You'd literally have to poll WoW players as they log into their account to get a more accurate representation. I'd bet that 80% of the players currently subscribed to WoW haven't played a Warcraft RTS, perhaps more.. Think about how many people never played video games before WoW. There's a lot.
but i did know warcraft before wow,but never did like warcraft saw ton of player play it before wow tho in netcafe!
I knew warcraft before wow came out, I didn't had a warcraft rts, but I played warcraft 3 sometimes at a friends house. After wow came out in europe he started playing. I joined him 3 months after wow was released.

waiting for ... nothing..
I preferd command and conquer
I was playing mmorpgs before wow, and when it was announced it didnt seem all that interesting. But back then who would give up their trox in a speedo for a goofy looking troll?
Thanks for the feedback and the suggestions. I understand polls have their limitations and are not fully always completely accurate.
