And with all this talk of World of Warcraft's amazing art style but low polys, versus EQII's high polys but weaker art style, the visual style of Gods and Heroes needs to be considered. Heglund took us on an in-game tour of the world, showing us the land, some combat, and a quest or two. The environment has been fully itemized and decorated, but combat goes a step further than I'm used to seeing. You click once to engage, and queue up your special attacks like usual, but your dodges, parries, and blocks are individually animated, and your specials have complex animations that interact with the enemy. You actually grab them, push them around, and knock them over, rather than the enemy using a generic "Oh, I've been hit" animation.

I hope this is the end of shitty static combat across all MMOs with MXO's Interlock precedent setting combat system, and at some point in the future Gods and Heroes' combat.
BTW besides the combat aesthetic the game sounds pretty cool in that article, you should all check it out. Lots of good PVP dynamic as well as PVE dynamic, and its by Perpetual with the Diablo 2 lead designer on board.
(Theres a video in the vid section of a lil combat as well)

So, Basically, it's the same dull combat as in every other MMO, just dressed up with cooler animations?
I want to know why the same kind of exciting open ended combat you see in an FPS like HL2 cant be implemented in an MMO. Why are developers locked into this idea that unless its a simulation of turn based combat with numbers floating above the combatants heads its not an MMO ?? Surely there is a middle ground where the kind of free flowing excitement of games like HL2 and say Jedi Knight can be used in conjuntion with charcater development and exploration.
Hell Planetside is the only game that has even come close imho.

Yes lol. It's a start :P And maybe theres more to it, but I couldnt care for the depth if it doesnt look visually appealing. (I'm sure people will call me on it, im aware its somewhat shallow, so dont bother :P)
RPGs are more calculative than FPS' so they require much much more going on in the backend to do in true real time with the way current systems are set up, both server wise, user connection, and clientside. Thats why its a big deal to see something like this in a MMORPG. We're inching closer and closer to real time.
I really didn't like the interlock system in the MxO beta, and its why I won't be playing the game when it launches. Its not that encouraging that another game would adopt something similar.
You prefer static combat then? It's just not visually appealing, its static and monotonous.
P.S. MXO offers traditional MMO combat in free fire mode. Hackers, gunslingers, and coders can all opt out of interlock. And go the old boring route. :P
Gods and Heroes calls it Node-Lock and claims to be the first MMORPG to do this kind of combat, thats pretty messed up considering its blatantly NOT. lol. The game is interesting though from what I've seen so far.
Personally i don't think the devs of this game are travelling down the right path.
They should concentrate on a more innovative form of combat rather than "nicer" animations. The Matrix combat does have pretty animations and slightly changes how mmorpg combat traditionally works - but i don't think it changes it a way that is any better than standard mmorpg combat.
The whole game looks pretty bog-standard currently.
Check out Roma Victor which is a "real" Roman mmorpg doing things right.
Heh. Stav, I find it funny that you have such high and picky expectations for your games, when the number one game you're psyched about is Mourning.
Sorry, I had to.
Gods and Heroes does sound fairly cool, but it pisses me off when games list gameplay elements in their features lists as though they are totally original, when they are in actuality being done in several other games. For example:
Node-Lock combat: Interlock, anyone? At least they could have come up with something without the word 'lock' in it lol
Innovative Questing System: This is just following with WoW and EQ2
Dynamic Zone Technology: Why don't they just call it instancing? That's what it is.
Not really ragging on this game--it sounds pretty cool actually. It's just touting a bunch of 'new' features that really aren't 'new' at all.
Agreed on that point, but if they're heading down the 'revolutionary' road and like to think of themselves as setting precedent with a new-age game... all the more power to them. I'm sick of the amount of MMO's out there right now simply refining age old features, beating the proverbial dead horse.
I like how these people think. Aside from the ones you mentioned, darqueen, there are still a LOT of new features that have never been seen before. Player run armies, the large scale battle system, squad based combat, etc.
It remains to be seen how it'll all pan out, but thank god there's developers out there looking forward for a change. I'm betting Perpetual will be seen as one of the next big MMO company's - the new technology they're introducing in Gods and Heroes makes me more curious to see what kind of game the Star Trek MMO will turn out to be. They have their stuff in order and probably a big enough budget to back it up if they have the Star Trek franchise behind them.
Yeah, hopefully they'll do alright. One kind of wonders if, though, for a new MMO company, that they have put a little too much on their plate from the get-go (both GaH & STO).
Here's hoping they succeed, though.

Just wanted to point out, Perpetual is just advertising features that will be in their game. It seems like their combat system is akin to traditional MMOs. MxO uses a fairly different, turn-based system which naturally allows their robust animation system to work. Here, it looks like "Node-Lock" will have the fast paced feeling of WoW or CoH while having some really cool combat animations where avatars interact with each other. WoW and EQ2's questing system isn't innovative. Its no different than past games, just better designed and more refined. Maybe they're planning on a system that gives players multiple branching options throughout the quest. What if their quest system recreates the gameplay feeling of Splinter Cell on stealth based quests or Half Life 2 on action oriented quests or even Kings Quest where there are puzzles to solve and background stories to uncover in order to progress? As far as calling instancing Dynamic Zone Tech., I agree. They might as well call it instancing. Though, there might be a specific reason why they're giving it a "fancier" name. Just trying to say, there might be a method to their madness.
Summed up pretty well, Darq and I are just a little irked at their PR departments claims of being 'first', I guess, well I speak only for myself but im betting Darq feels the same.
I like the game ideas and setting even if some of it is blatantly copying. Hell Musicians do it all the time and still make millions..lol If this game continues to go well i will check it out as long as it isnt a static level based game. I am forfeiting all static level based games from now on......
Looks pretty interesting... especially the whole squad thing
That sentence is true... which is why everyone is earnestly hoping MMO's like Gods and Heroes changes it.
You can't lump GNH into that category just yet... like I said, there are still quite a few never-before-attempted features when you put aside that "dynamic zone" etc. bs.
