Help which game should I pick?

Seven77Seven77 Member Posts: 38

I'm looking for a newer game, that won't make me feel like I'm grinding just to get to the fun part, has a good community and has the adventure feeling of WoW (and obviously action). I was thinking possibly EVE, AoC or possibly even Guild Wars, I've never played any of them. If theres anything else anyone can recommend I'd appreciate it.  Though, I want to know  the opinions of those who have played them to see If I'd like them based on what I like, thanks!

I just went back to Warhammer for the first time since launch and have been having a blast with non stop pvp.  Might be worth checking out especially with the endless free trial.

Try AOC the new exp pack is out and lots more poeple are playing, Lots of action as well and good lore. Great classes. But you might have to spend extra money to get exp pack. Theres a trial for an entire beginning section up to a certain stage of the game.

of the games you mentioned, eve had a lot of possibility and seems very beautiful but it wasnt my sort of gameplay: skills based off of time, very big and can get very complex, combat way too slow paced for me but i really didnt spend more than a week or so in it. aoc sucked when i first played i heard its gotten better but i doubt it. guild wars fantastic cant wait for second one. of the 3 id suggest guild wars but it seems like the community is done with campaigning, i played since beta had a blast but after i beat the game spent a lot of time pvping it seemed like people stopped campaigning and i couldnt find too many groups that were chill and liked to have fun but there were some. dont truly know though considering i havent played in awhile n most of that time playing was pvp. so that being said if you are patient n want time to build n develop your character n such and be immersed in a badass game id say eve, want some chill fun that you can keep goin back to for free after ye buy the game go with guild wars. i say hold out for guild wars 2 or star wars old republic though if thsoe fail ima quit playin mmos i swear it lol

Of those mentioned, Guild Wars would get my nod.  Gameplay is much like running instances non-stop, but with henchmen as a party (think of giant single player with towns as lobbies).  If you can find grouping, such as playing with friends or a guild, it feels more alive.  Its cheap to get started and there's no monthly sub.

Another one to look at would be DnD Online.  Great combat, lots of grouping.

I just started playing AoC again, and I'm enjoying it a lot. The community is a lot larger than it used to be, the new expansion brought a lot of people back, and it has a lot of adventure / action aspects you were talking about. So I would reccomend AoC.

I went back to Warhammer for a couple months earlier this year. It was indeed nonstop PvP to a point. Once I got past level 20 the action started to fall off. Warbands were less common and I found it excruciating to do the PvE necessary just to cover the travel costs. Soloing is pretty boring in that game and it's difficult to find anyone else who is up for it. If you enjoy it at all, the travel costs won't be a problem for you, but I personally could not stand it.

If by "adventure feeling of WoW" you mean good quest design, Age of Conan has some of that. Specifically it has goals which are not the combat itself, but for which combat is sometimes necessary. I have never liked kill quests, because the traditional hero of high fantasy is always set on a distant goal and avoids a fight when he can. There's plenty of fighting in AoC, but it often comes with a feeling that it was necessary and important. This game is widely disliked so do your research before taking my recommendation. I canceled my subscription because I found myself playing alone more than I liked.

If what you mean by adventure is a sense of vastness, travel, and exploration, LotRO is a good recommendation. You will spend much of your time leveling by yourself, but the overworld is beautfully done and limited fast-travel options help to preserve its sense of enormous spaces. However it is an entirely humorless and sexless game, about as whitebread as you can get without a wrist strap. On a positive note, you can get a pet man who runs around with a picket sign shouting.

If what you want is to group regularly, absolutely Anarchy Online. It's old & ugly, the quests are a pain to track down & follow, and the stat & crafting systems are pretty impenetrable - but it's got a healthy population of alts xp-locked in different level brackets, and it's pretty easy to find a group for low level activities. The world is also very large, and difficult to explore in a number of ways. This is my favorite MMO, so you can take any of this with a grain of salt, but the bulk of the game is free so no harm giving it a shot unless you have to deal with a bandwidth meter or cap.

A lot of people still play Guild Wars. I have a friend on Steam who fired the game up while I was typing this. Most players will know the content well by now, and you'll likely be forced to rush through anything you'd want to do as a group - but it's a lovely game with excellent, often harrowing action and IMO the greatest soundtrack ever put together. If you forgo the trilogy to start with just one of the games, go with Factions.

EVE Online is a phenomenal game. Try it at your peril. What WoW does to some people with addictive personalities, EVE does to anyone who can stand it. Do yourself an enormous favor and just put it out of your mind.

Final answer: Take a break, then go back to WoW and roll on a new server.

I got to T4 in 2 weeks and all I have done is pvp.  At T4 there is non stop sc's popping and world pvp to boot.  This was the shortest leveling experience i've had in any game and the most pvp I've been able to tdo in the process.  Especially for a game that can be played pretty casually.

Is War any good? i loved the concept of it, quit after a month from launch though

  • NephaeriusNephaerius Member UncommonPosts: 1,671

Like I said I'm enjoying it.  Obviously taste varies though so what I like is not for everyone else.  I have played a ton of games out there and haven't found another group pvp game I like more at this point in time.  For me pvp has been very easy to access through the entire leveling process.  You can also play pretty casually and get far.  Like I said I hit T4 in two weeks.  To hit cap in Aion took me like 4 months I think.   I am on vacation atm, so maybe it would have taken me a month to hit T4 under normal conditions.  So virtually no grind, that's a plus.  I also love punting enemies through the air, another plus.  Regardless, there is always the endless free trial and you can buy the game off amazon for $5 (first month only $5) or you can just upgrade if you decide to sub without the need to buy the game.  I play order on Badlands, send me a mail here if you want/decide to play.

CIty sieges have still not switched over to full pvp, they will do so in patch 1.3.5 and be similar to 24v24 pvp battles.  You can easily find interviews about this patch.  Otherwise, I personally have yet to run any instances.  That's just not really my style, but I am aware of 6+ lvl 40 dugeons and a handful available prior to that  if that's something you like to do for a change of pace.  As far as Chaos tanks...I'm guessing you're a Chosen so the answer is....they're awesome in pvp.  Just wade right back to those healers and finagle them back to your team for slaughtering or stay out there and pwn them yourself if you're getting the heals you need.  Personally I play an dwarf tank (IB) so probably a similar experience to what you will have.  One nice thing I have found is that I am only R34/RR34 but am still able to take out RR55 or higher players even with my lower level gear.  So even though tons of people outlevel/outgear me I still don't feel useless at all.

I am not sure about the oceanic piece of your question.

A side note: 1.3.6 will also allow you to roll Destro and Order on the same server with some precautions (some kind of lockout timer), we'll see what the negative consequences of this might be.

So far I've tried a bit of WAR(was good until it dropped off at the 20's) ,Everquest 2 and EVE  though I felt like I was grinding from the getgo to get to the fun part ,WAR  was a bit different, only after I got to the 20's did I feel like I was solo grinding. EVE is a whole different game from what I've played, it has a helpful community to and I'm still trying it out ,though, It seems a little to slow for me. I also tried Guild Wars I had the same feeling as the others. Like I'm going to have to mindlessly do quests and level up to start getting to the fun part, It's to bad they lock out the PvP part for trials,  I'd like to see what that's like. Out of them all AOC was giving me the most fun from the start. With an interesting assortment of  quests, a beautifully rendered world to look at along the way and the PvP mixed in the server gave me some good thrills, fun people to fight or fight with. Unfortunately, after Tortage it started to slow down and gave me that grinding feeling again, turning into a go here do this kind of quest assortment etc. etc., soloing deal. Some ganking attempts did spice it up, but it just wasn't enough.  So far I've looked at most mainstreams, except LOTRO which I'll have to try out. If anyone has any more suggestions, it would be nice thanks! I  also wouldn't care if it isn't so mainstream, as long as it has decent graphics and no cartoonish anime crud thanks! You've all been a great help!

Forgot to mention I played WAR shortly after it's release...

maybe wait for FF14 to come out or TERRA online? But GW2 would be awesome i think, no quest at all just scenarios or events and it changes the world depending on your action too.

It doesn't meet most of your criteria, but I feel like tossing this one at you anyway.

    Ryzom.

It's kind of old, and it can get grindy. If you try to solo you'll find yourself doing the same crap over and over again. But the community is very strong and very helpful, and if you manage to find some good people to roll with there's a strong feeling of adventure to be had.

The world is very alien with good variety and a sense of hugeness & distance. There are seasons, each lasting several days. Monsters have migration patterns, and some of them are very vicious. I'm particularly fond of the wild dogs that roam around the eastern province and set on you right when you've found your rhythm. The game has been adopted by a company that seems to care deeply about it, and they do live events when they can manage it. (The game also went open source a week ago.)

The free trial lasts three weeks, and afaik is no longer restricted to the starter island. Time enough, probably, to know if you're going to get along with the locals. To be frank, I often don't, but in my time there I fell in with a couple of good guilds, and really enjoyed myself until they self-destructed. If you have no one to play with, the game can be pretty lonesome. One thing it doesn't do well is present strangers with immediately apparent reasons to play together.

If you are allowed two characters, keep one in the newbie area to play the excellent tutorial campaign, but send another to the mainland right away and ask on Universal chat if someone would mind showing you around. (They love doing this, no joke.)

I have a soft spot for this game, in no small part because of the atmosphere and music. Writing about it makes me want very badly to reopen my account.

    More here.
