Dropping items on the ground

How long do items persist in the game world after you drop them on the ground? And do they just instantly decay away when you log out?

If you drop an item, no one can pick it up but you so you can't mule stuff between toons if that is what you are thinking.
And the answer is: 5-10 seconds from drop to destruction. So I take it there is no simple way to transfer items between characters on the same account aside from trusting another player to "hold this while I switch".
You can buy a house.
I remember in UO you could drop things on the ground and anyone could pick them up. The fun part was putting a deadly poison trap on a box and coloring the box some bringht color making it irresistable to pick, open and see what was inside. Deadly poison was uncurable and meant death to anyone affected by it. I used to laugh my ass off alot.
