Some screen shots

Second day playing and took some screenshots of my character and the tree city.  I thought they were pretty nifty.

Here's a few of my own. My collection's a bit small, yet... but I'm working on that :-p

Shot 1 - Sunset on the starter island, with the distance blur effect active.

Shot 2 - Another location on the island, some point during the evening, featuring the multi-layered clouds; VG has the best sky system I've seen in a MMO yet, hands down (IMO)

Shot 3 - The starry evening sky gives way to sunrise over a hilly terrain

Shot 4 - An approaching thunderstorm; featuring one of the coolest parts of the sky/weather system. You actually see thunderstorms gradually "roll in" from the distance, and then the rain starts, etc. You can see the blue sky off to the left of the pic as the storm hadn't fully arrived.

The weather is also localized. On the mainland I was in a locale where a storm was moving in. I teleported to another location a fair distance S of the area, and the sky was perfectly clear, not a storm in sight. In most other MMOs (that I've played anyway) the weather develops by basically having the entire sky go dark at the same time, then it rains.. then the entire sky goes light at the same. VG's the only MMO I've played where it rolls in as a storm would and is local to that given area.

These shots obviously focus on the sky, etc... I intend to post more at some point... just need to get  around to sorting through my shots :p

Very nice!  Vanguard has an absolutely beautiful world.

The graphics are just so generic and bland looking. Also the world has this weird plastic fake look to it and it just isn't very interesting.

I think you have to see it in game.

There is a certain quality to the lighting and shadows that makes it far more pleasant in game then when looking at screen shots.

Definitely. My first Whoa! moment was in the forest near the wood elf starting area and a storm rolled in. Trees were swaying violently in the howling wind and the rain appeared to be blowing around in the wind gusts. Pretty incredible to see, but hard to show in pictures. It was sort of like a thunderstorm in Oblivion.

I think the main problem for me is the weird looking character models. They are just so bad and they all look like they share the same body, even the animal races and they don't even have tails. It's weird the character models look out of proportion.

  • KuriakosKuriakos Member Posts: 27

The plastic look you are referring to is not there.  It is more of a polish look I guess.  If you look at upcoming games you will see this as something they are going for as well.  Also in game running around is much more impressive than still screens just like with anything.   The game is pretty cool looking graphically.  As far as all characters sharing the same model have you actually played or messed around with each race?  Basically because they have two arms, two legs, finger and a head they must all be the same model.  Pretty much the same in every game I'm afraid.  You must hate all games.  Tails missing does not mean they share the same model...just about every race has a different skeletal structure plus you can change them further in customization.   Please don't troll a forum on a game you have no idea about thank you =)

What are you on about trolling and not having an idea? I played the game and I have EYES!

If I showed them graphics to anyone they would think they're so ugly. I mean look at them, nothing stands out it all looks so generic. The trees look odd like they have a shine on them... why I say plastic, bark doesn't have that quality to it. I don't know how you can call the game good looking.

As for the character models they are so bad. They look dead behind the eyes and their body shapes are odd and their skin looks like plastic.

Mix of new and old there and when they said they were doing models I was happy cause the old ones were so bad. All they did was make them a lower poly count to improve performance. They all share the same body just morphed bigger like in SWG character creator. Frigging even WoW has different models for each race.

I don't get why they're so bad when they can create such good models like..

imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageHere are some of mine. To be very honest, when first starting the game, the 'plastic' feel bothered me too. After a day or two that made an 180 turn and currently I really love the style. And of course: screenshots don't do justice to the ingame feel.

Can't see the tentonhammer shots as they just bring me to the main page. However, your first two shots are clearly cherry-picked to show the most generic and low-detail images. The second shot, in particular, with textures at low, no shaders enabled, etc... And you present those as an example of why you think VG's graphics are dated. Seriously, that's just lazy and disingenuous. You can do a 10 second google search and see that's not a fair representation of it. I'll go out on a limb here and assume that most people playing the game aren't doing so with everything turned down or off.

That said, find me any MMO with the most up-to-date and current tech and I can make them look every bit as bad as that second one you posted. I won't, however, try to pass it off as "how the game looks" overall.

As for a more accurate and current representation.. Wanna see how my character looks, right now, in game at my current settings?

Here's a screenshot of my character as of 5 minute ago.

And here's another I took earlier from outside Khal... Nice moody pic.

Not quite the same as what you posted as "representative of Vanguard's Graphics" are they... and my settings aren't nearly at max. That's about "middle of the road" as far as settings go. That's something to remember when looking at screenshots - what quality settings was the game running at when the shot was taken?

If you don't like the graphics style, that's fine and entirely your right. But if you're going to critique it, at least present it honestly, and don't go cherry-picking the most generic looking shots you can find to support your views.

Those character shots that Miffy posted are nothing what the game looks like.  Tht halflig is at the lowest settings.  Please be constructive.  I could dig up some pretty nasty character models of any other game too.  LOTRO chars anyone??

The nicest parts of the game are the environment, shadows,  and water when I trialed the game.  I stopped when I played the trial tho because the music was so boring it put me to sleep. It also made the game feel dead. I didn't finish trial island though. Does the soundtrack change after trial island?

    MMOs played: Too many
Watch List: FFXIV, CoH:GR, GW2, SWTOR, TERA, Earthrise

I only did the trial island briefly when it was first released, so I can't remember how it is. I've spent the most time in Qalia and to me it's pleasantly understated for the most part. There are some places where there's a woman singing in what sounds like faux Latin that sounds odd, because it sounds like the middle of a song that just starts randomly. The main theme in and around Khal is one of my favorites. Definite Arabian theme, but not bombastic like city themes from, say, WoW.

I really enjoy the look of the game.  The gnome starting city of Mekalia is my favorite place to begin in Vanguard simply because of its look.

I took this screenshot of my character standing on the docks in Khal just now.  Image is a bit big when viewed at full size cuz of the resolution I play at.

    image

I may take some screenshots from inside Mekalia in a bit too.

Here is a screenshot from the more city part of Mekalia - the gnome starting area.

I love how the lighting is done with crystals in a lot of the area, and that for being underground it can have some great color to it.

Pity about SOE putting only a very small skeleton crew for a dev team and have brought the game to a stands still in terms of any more development time investment in it. Players of this are playing a game on life support by its owners that's going nowhere for the money you're paying to play
