There is absolutely no conceivable way you could know that you "would be subscribed to an MMO" right now if MEO had been finished. Seriously. None. Well, not unless you are the Doctor and have a TARDIS hiding in your backyard and travel to some alternate time when the game was finished, played it for the duration of it's natural life, and then came back to our world to share with us the great news. That's the thing about history. Sure, we can look back and say, "If this had happened, then this would have resulted." But the fact is that history has flown forth in one direction. MEO may have been a great game...and it may have gone the way of so many other MMOs out there that started off with promise and hype and ended up in the toilet.

I think the point people are trying to convey is that they would have rather had a sandbox Middle-earth world, like MEO, rather than a themepark Middle-earth world like LotRO.

Me, I'm OVERJOYED that we did not get any incarnation of MEO. I love LOTRO the way it is, with only a couple tiny issues; the location of Dol Goldur, and radiance-gated content.

And I don't need a dimension jumping device to say that.

I don't know how anybody can be over joyed at the state of LOTRO at the moment.  With the updates comng less and less. The continued drive down the road into you must have more radiance.  The game has become about greed,  Somwere along the road when they released mom,  the game became less about middle earth and more about greed.

I logged in to pay maintenance the other day and actually talked to one person we were in an alliance with.  He said they game had become very slow, and there was not much grouping any more.  He said how many times can you run sh before you get burn out.   So I stayed logged in perty much the entire day yesterday.  The raidinge aliance channel never had any more that 8 people log in, and most of them could not agree on anything.  This on brandywine.

Can you honestly tell me you really loved som the smallest xpac in mmo history, with content that only lasted a week. Unless you love running solo skirmishes.  I guess the game will be around for a while it will always have it die hard fans like those few who still play swg,  but honestly the lack of any true content that has been pushed out since november is bothersome,  meanwhile if you compare it to its sister game ddo you can see all the dev action is there.

I would have perfered meo to what we have now, at least you would not be locked in by timeline of the ring.

kinda jaded that you consider Auto Assault sci-fi yet you call it post apocalyptic later on...

Can't believe i didn't get the Warhammer one, i think the year confused me

    Post apocalyptic is a sub-genre of sci-fi.

IF you are a f2p player 70-90% of all the content is locked, that to me is not free to play whenyou have to buy adv. packs/xpacs.and the instancing and small outside worlds are ok,being in a dungeon all day is not my cup of tea. MMOers are getting to anal these days, what happened to just enjoying a game and not picking it apart like movie critics do with well movies. :P

Um.. did you just criticize your criticism?

I was merly pointing out a fact, really. I dont see stating facts as criticizem. I enjoyed DDO,for the time I spent. Its a really fun game and stays true to the Dungeons and Dragons aspect ,not to mention the combat/skill system is taken (for the most part) right from the books, withc i thought was really cool.

Is this list purposely mostly SF MMO’s or does that just tell us something about the genre? SF is a love of mine and so is Tolkein, but at least we got Lotro in the end. Do we get a prize, a gravestone with their names on or something? :)

R.I.P, you took some of our dreams with you.

unfortunately it does say something about the genre..  there are very few successful SciFi games.. the most popular is Eve, which at 350k subs is ... a drop in the WoW bucket... Fantasy games are more popular by far.. its a shame really.. because it makes the bar for success much higher for those types of games due to a more limited possible player base.. image

No disrespect meant to WoW, but if you discount it due to all of the non-MMO gaming related factors that have attributed to it's subscription success and then compare Eve to to the other AAA P2P MMOs out there EvE is right up there with them sub wise. Makes me believe a solid put together sci-fi MMO would have just as good of a chance as a fantasy one. I agree that the bar to consider a game solid is high (higher than it was in 2003/2004) now which makes it hard for any game, sci-fi or fantasy, to make it these days. But, that's what happens when the CEOs, Marketing department and shareholders are driving development instead of the actual people hands on making the game. *shrug*

I reread your post, but my question is how can you discount the most popular MMO in the world currently? No matter how they got their subs..they are direct competitors to other P2P MMOs.Not only is WOW incredibly successful, but because not many people can afford (or want) to sub to more than one game, it has a direct effect on how many people may subscribe to a new release. I agree with you that I think a well made sci-fi MMO could succeed, but in a genre where player numbers are so important the huge grasp WOW has and the proliferation of hundreds of other MMOs is diluting any potential player base. Even Eve is a barrier to another Sci-fi MMO succeeding as the market already has a game they are happy with ....EVE itself. These games that were released a couple of years ago also have the advantage of having 5 or 6 years to fix their bugs and iron out other issues. Because there is so much choice out there currently a lot of consumers are not willing to 'make do' with anything less than very good. WoW and EvE have had a number of years to try and perfect their gaming experience, new games often may have no longer than 6 months or so before people will un-sub. After all, why should I pay for a buggy new game, when I can go elsewhere and get a solid, mature game with 7 years of development and a large community?

We'll see what happens with SWTOR. It's a sci-fi MMO after all. I'm hopeful it may be one of WoW's first true competitors.

Yeah, it would have been fun great game but instead they made it a grind-a-holic's game.

    Next quiz needs this question:

Name the races constantly used in MMOs, even in "high fantasy" games.

    Answer: Humans, elves, orcs, dwarves.

"Of all the things wrong with today's RPGs, 2D characters on a 3D background is the worst."

I'm glad I'm not the only person who remembers this one. Was so sad it never made it to release.

And Dragon Empires has to be worth a mention too.
