Hi guys,
A little introduction to myself:
I'm new to these forums but have been on the website a few times during boring work days :P. I'm an avid mmo fan. I've been playing mmo's for about 5 -6 years, Started with Knight online world (bloody loved that game!!). After finding World of warcraft and being sucked into azeroth I lost all on interest in all other mmo's. I have been playing wow constantly for around 3 years with breaks here and there but always being sucked im, I think I'm finally free of the game. The new expansion ruined the game for me. It was too easy.. The gearscore thing did and still does my head in... And im sick of a community that couldn't care less about you as a player. That’s when I first found EVE Online through a work friend, He told me about the game and the sci- fi nerd in me screamed out in joy at the idea of fighting in a war of EPICNESS on a single server. He explained most of the game to me and tbh I'm sold. I'm more of a fighter always have been, I couldn’t heal if my life depended on it (no pun intended :P). In wow for example I played DPS role, never the tank as I liked to sit back and kick a*se.
The questions for you:
Having spoken to my friend at work about this in quite detail he did explain to me that the game has a very steep learning curve and that I should look for a corporation *guild* which would help me progress. So Basically I'm looking for advice on everything really. What race would you suggest? What skills would you suggest learning first? Any corporations you know of that would be willing to take me in their ranks?
I am currently downloading the 14 day trail now and hope to join you guys shortly in the world of EVE.
Thanks for taking your time reading this any comments and advice is much appreciated.
Cheers,
Dan

there is a tread for a 21 day trial on this site.also when you say steep learning.its like trying to do rock climbing without a rope and its your first try ,next stop top of the hill 2 mile up!
my advice:2 thing read everything!second:first thing you need to learn is where is the notpad and bookmark for star system
with these two things it will make your life a lot simpler .DO NOT RELY on your memory for names of npc event etc
why?you will be too busy learning 69 other stuff to remember 1 minute later!aside from that?after you learned the 2 thing i mention before doing anything else you can follow tips from the other gamer in the game
ps:tutorial is a great help to get you started and if you ear very good music while in space ZOOM OUT AND WHATCH OUT
most of the time it means you have a lot of foe around you!(npc)
Cheers for the Tip's I'll make sure I keep that in mind !
I'll have a look for the 21 day trail as well, Mite as well get as much time for free as I can :P
Cheers,
Dan
i am sorry to say 21 day in eve is the equal to a 14 day in other game its just the start of an epic story!(if you like to read the story is great!
I've been playing for a few months now.
and having literally tried everything out there, this to me is the only REAL mmo out there (allthough, i may just be completely fed up with fantasy), good choice.
My #1 tip - forget your knowledge of any other MMO's you've played - if you come at this game with the same mindset as WoW, and expect the game to play similar, since it's a MMO, you'll hate it.
My #2 tip - find a corp who is willing to teach. EVE University is great, but you'll feel your voice drowned out by the masses there, and the corp is pretty unforgiving.
edit: sent you a 21 day trial as well.
There are two kinds of people in this world. People who pick their nose.. and liars.
My only advice is that you need to learn how to setup your overview. For me it is the very first thing that annoys me, i dont think the tutorial covers that. CCP polished out most controls to make it user friendly. See you in space.
I'll keep that in mind, I'm growing tired of the MMO grind that seems to come with every title out today "go here kill that" oh I seem to have made no impact on anything other the gaining a little XP, Looking and reading about EVE It seems alot different.
Thank you Very much for the extended trial !
Cheers,
Dan
Ummmm, where to begin.
Well for starters, race. It does't make any difference to your gameplay other than where in space you start and with what basic ships you fly but you are free to train up and fly any races ships in the game. There are no specific bonus or penalty for picking a race. Now having said that Caldari is generally the race new player start off with because they read the races descriptions and assume Caldari are the PvP / war race. This means that Caldari space will be a little more crowded and the Caldari starter corp chat tends to have some of the WoW types talking crap. I would recommend picking Minmatar but that is purely personal bias on my part Read their back stories and see which one you prefer.
As for a starter corp, I am going to tell you what everyone else will tell you. Do your trial and see if you want to subscribe first and once you do subscribe apply to the Eve University corp. They will take in new players and teach them. You may have to wait a few days for them to process your app because they generally have a little backlog but it's not too bad and you will learn that waiting a few days for things in Eve is common and this is a good thing.
Now for the big one, what skills to train first. You are going to get 2 schools of thought here. The first one will tell you to train your learning skills first to maximize your long term skill point gain efficiency. I do not subscibe to this idea at all. This will take about a month to do at first and you will claw your own eyes out due to boredom and no ability to do anything really useful.
The 2nd way and is my preferred way is to train up some basic combat skills first. Train up your starter races frigate and weaponry skills to atleast 3 and preferably 4. From there move on to things like basic navigations, mechanic, engineering and electronics skills. These will be your support skills that let you fit your ships and fly them better. These skill will improve your tank. If you are wanting to jump into pvp quickly train up some Electronics Warfare skills to be able to use things like Warp Scramblers and Webifiers, these are must haves for pvp especially as a new player because your role at first in pvp will be that of a scout / tackler. Once you have the basics trained up then move on to the learning skills, these will now help take noticeable time off the more advanced skills.
Something I and many others will tell you is to specialize early on, this will get you competitive and far more usseful as a new player much faster. Download the program EveMon, this is a skill management program that works outside of game but has a link to the game via API key . With this program you select ships and skills you wish to train and it will plan out what skills you need and the best way to train them up.
One final piece of advice from me. Forget everything you think you know about MMOs, especially what you learned in WoW. This game does not work that way. (edit: I see Ramones gave the same advice above lol)
Welcome to Eve and good luck.
I'll follow your advice on this one. I understand that this game is completely diffrent to every other MMO out and thats whats drawing me in, Am looking forward to playing and getting involved. I really think i'm going to enjoy this game.
If you don't mind mailing me you character names i'll add you as friends in game
Cheers,
Dan
EVE is a game that you can play an enjoy for a very long time, with each year being different from the next
This by Ramones274 is really the best advice you can get :
" My #1 tip - forget your knowledge of any other MMO's you've played - if you come at this game with the same mindset as WoW, and expect the game to play similar, since it's a MMO, you'll hate it.
It's hard to really explain this in words but it's so true. It's OK to die in this game and that's part of the fun. Plus, you have to learn to think of yourself as the Quest giver. You are in control of the game. That's the best I can do in explaining it.
As for gereral tip here you go:
Basic skills for all pilots
The three things I would focus on in the beginning
1. find a source of income - it could be anything that's possible in the game so don't let your previous game experience restrict your thinking.
2. Learn to fly a frigate in combat - learn everything there is to learn about this ship from fittings to abilities to types and tactics.
3. Socialize - EVE is, to a large degree, about your reputation. Don't be afraid to go out and make mistakes, but don't make the mistake of being afraid to go out.
Fly Safe!
EDIT: This might help too
How do I know you aren't a spy ? Welcome to Eve.
(1) If you played other MMOs a lot before EVE, try and forget everything you learned in them as much as possible, particularly any expectations you have about other players being limited in how they can interact with you, and even more particularly any ideas about character advancement being the aim of the game rather than just another tool to advance your goals like wealth, assets, game knowledge and friends.
(2) If any warnings pop up, read them.
(3) While you will often be told "trust no-one", that's not quite true. What you should do is treat trusting anyone as if it were gambling. What are the odds? What are the stakes? What can I afford to lose? What's in it for him? Scams and ganks are perfectly legal in EVE, even in hi-sec.
(4) When older players give you advice about fitting ships, for the love of god, at least try following their suggestions.
(5) Don't listen to the morons who will advise you to train nothing but Learning skills to start with. Yes, doing that is more "efficient" when it comes to accumulating SP, but you're paying to play the game. A good rule of thumb is to spend no more than 50% of your training time on Learnings until you have basics at 4, advanced at 3. Then just leave them alone for a month or two.
(6) Don't listen to the people who tell you that you shouldn't leave hi-sec "until you're ready" and then tell you you will need x million SP or y ship class or z amount of ISK. You're "ready" to leave hi-sec when you want to leave hi-sec. I know people who left to live in 0.0 on their second day. I went to 0.0 after about 2 months, and I've frequently wished I went earlier. I would however recommend completing all the tutorials before leaving hi-sec.
(7) Don't listen to the idiot moron griefers who spread the pernicious lie that you need 10/20/40M SP and a Battleship/HAC/Dreadnaught "to be competitive" at PvP. Player skill beats character skill in PVP. The best way for a new player to "compete" at PvP is to get out there and do it. Want to learn to PvP? Join Red vs Blue. They will accept anyone no matter what. They aren't a training corp; they exist purely to provide fun PvP on demand in Hi-sec. You can leave or rejoin at any time. If you get a taste for blood, you can get some great training with Agony Unleashed, who will teach you PVP procedures more formally and thoroughly.
(8) You don't have to grind missions to make ISK. Missioning is the EVE equivalent of being on welfare - a boring, low-level income for people who can't find a real job. There's a huge and complex economy out there, with a lot of opportunities for a thoughtful, alert player with a fast, cheap ship.
(9) Do ALL the tutorials.
(10) Everything I've told you is a cheap dirty lie designed to make you lose your ship to me and quit EVE, because I'm a nasty amoral griefer who doesn't want filthy noobs like you cluttering up my nice, l33t game.
Welcome to EVE.
Give me liberty or give me lasers
A great place to find a corporation is the EVE forums, many advertise they accept new members and don't be afraid to leave if you find your first few tries aren't working out well.

Recommend you search the internet for and read the many new player guides on all EVE topics. Here's one I like to recommend.
Battleclinic's New Player Guide (bookmark this site, a wealth of EVE info there)

My number one piece of advice, never fly more than you can afford to lose (and replace quickly)
If a deal sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Scamming is legal in EVE and be very wary of chat spammers in the major trade hubs (Jita, Amarr Throne Worlds and Rens btw)
The Goonswarm never open recruits. Remember that and know that most corps will not charge you a fee to be a member. (there is a reason to do so, but that tends to be the more high end corps)
As others have said, to PVP in EVE you need to first secure your income sources, by either mission running, mining, trading, industry or some other PVE activity. Very few people can turn a profit off of PVP alone, but if you go that route, plan on being a pirate.
Wormholes are one of the best places to earn ISK in the game atm, however upcoming planetary changes in the next expansion may change this. WH's are not for new players however, more of a long term goal to shoot for.
Make sure you don't wait too long to get into PVP, and try to get out in 0.0 fairly early (3-6 months max) so you can see some of the best parts of EVE.

Sound advice ^^
This is what I do. I have a dedicated money making toon that I have spent about 10 mil sp on. He is a hi-sec trader / miner / manufacturer and can make 5-10 mil an hour with zero risk. This toon finances my pvp / pirate toon that I play most of the time. If my pirate gets low on funds, I just log in the hi-sec and replenish the funds.
You don't have to do it this way, but it's easier and more cost effective than 2 boxing.
Good luck and welcome to Eve!
Thanks for the tips guys, I'm following and reading all your tips !
Started playing last night and must say I'm fracking loving it! Great game I love the graphics the ships are stunning as is the environments. I have my skill training fully booked for 24 hours on the basic combat stuff as suggest by a few of you.
Anyway If you fancy adding me in game just PM me
Cheers again guys,
Dan
Ah, easy answer!
Faction Warfare!.. Seek out the minmatar Militia
If your a *daisy fresh* Newb in Eve I'd advice to NOT be so quick about joinining a Corp. You get put into a corp full of other new players learning just the same as you. So do the tutorials, get some missions under your belt and chat to your starting corp as much as possible.
Corps which take noobs are often noobs themselves, and even if they arnt they dont want to teach you ALL the basics, so make sure your confident and know what you want before shopping for a corp.
But by the sounds of things Faction Warfare would be just your thing
