@Negentropy: I think most generations had their own way to try to get noticed. A miniskirt, or a bikini isn't enough in current age, so they have to try something else. Some competitive gaming (cybersports) for example wouldn't hurt that much.

Solo online gaming dates back to a few titles, and they might expect something like diablo, I think if you have checked my links you know why diablo or diablo II like things are special.

I don't get what people see in DDO I played it for a short time when it was still a subscription game and was surprized how bad it was compared to eq2, WoW, L2. It surprized me because I went into it having liked the original pnp D&D. Is what made the pnp game interesting was all the totally unique characters you could come up with and get away with. For example you could be a halfing theif that could not fight his way out of paper bag and that worked in a pnp game. With DDO they tried to copy a bunch of different MMOs and adapt it to D&D and it just didn't work. If you made a colorfull character then other players wouldn't party with you and you couldn't solo. As a MMO it totally lacked balance and polish.

Let me guess you tried to solo a MMO that was designed to play in parties.....

DDO was always a decent game, just that the soloers disliked it.  Since they have added more solo friendly content it has become a better game, but the fun still is far better when playing with a party.

So from that little sentence he posted, you drew this large picture.  He didn't say anything about solo or group.  All he said was he didn't like the game, "found it boring".  I beta tested DDO.  Didn't like it then.  Played it after release.  Didn't like it then.  Tried it after it went F2P.  Guess what, still don't like it.  I guess from that you'll conclude that it's because I like to solo.  How about well gee I don't know.  Asking someone what it is they didn't like about the game, before making assumptions about why they didn't like the game.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

LOL so the survey says former wow players....

Which makes this survey automaticaly say wow is number one.

I call this a marketing plan by blizzard...just how much money did they pay?

Actualy a good comparison of what the top games are are not gotten from this poor excuse of a survey with made up numbers.....a better way to see the truth is to check the actual number of independent posters to the specifc games message forum on a site like this one and gamefaqs.

Thats should tell you game popularity and interest....and also i am not refering to the number of threads and posts...but the number of actual indepent postes.....

Since anyone can make a zilliion "me too" threads or "bump" threads

Mike, where's Dofus in all this? Wasn't the game in the top three or was that me dreaming?

    I'm just cool like that.

Does DDO online have over 300.000 people playing it? If not, they are nowhere near the third spot since other MMO's do, and they are not f2p.

that would be for america only i assume!since xfire paint a very different picture!

They asked 19000 people (a sample) about what games they play. Not sure about regions included, how they choosen who can be in the sample (ages, etc)  then they have asked about specific games and maybe gave you an option to name another game. But it means if you would name a few, you run into trouble. And if you were able to enter your own text they looked for people who wrote the same thing.

But for them: Warhammer, Warhammer Online, WAR... might look different. Add EU / US (region) to the text, or look for people who try to put a few games into same line, etc. or think their game doesn't qualify....

I've been trying DDO on and off for two months now, almost always grouped, and yeah, it is boring as hell.  The "dungeons" are almost all the same, and there's just that one town.  Half the time, its a pain in the ass even finding a good quest for our level.  You'd think with how similar they are, they'd randomly generate an infinite number of them or something.  Sadly, that would actually be a huge improvement.

I'm with the skeptics here.  Not only am I less than thoroughly impressed with this game, I don't see tons of people playing it.  Maybe lots of people who don't currently play any MMOs cite DDO because they did give it a try, since its free, they technically still have an "active" account, and the name is memorable.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

NPD is USA only, Dofus is only popular in Europe.

I'd question the sample, given some of the result; the fact that Runescape, DAoC and others are up there would indicate to me that most of those interviewed were veteran MMO gamers, not the majority new people that came to WoW as their first MMO.

This game  made little to no traction when it was pay to play.  Now its free and people love it.

Are people missing that connection or just playing it because its free and they enjoy punishment?

Hell I'll go make a really crappy mmorpg right now and sell crap in a cash shop.

A man or "gamer" should look for what is, and not for what he thinks should be.

I would have like to have seen the entire list.  I found it interesting that ddo moved up to number 2.  I would like to see where lotro sits now.  As well as other games.

I would also like to know how they identified who to poll and so forth.

    But its some interesting data.
