I have just checked and read a recent thread on Aion, they linked to the new mini pets the game is adding and it just flooded memories back to me of sitting down with my son watching pokemon.
That then got me thinking, why we have not yet seen a pokemon themed MMO in the vain of WOW and AION, full blown fantasy MMO.
To me the story and the deep deep lore that exists, as well as the millions of types of pokemon that exist, it would be, or would have the potential to be a stunning MMO.
Am I the only one thinking about this ?.
PS : 34 this year lol. and while I might not actually play the game myself, I know my daughter would love it.

Talking fully 3D mmo here , not 2D nintendo DS crapola.
copy right i think.
So if who ever owns pokemon isn't making or selling the IP, there's nothing that can be done.
stoneage is quite similar to a pokemon online game.
Unfortunately there has been many threads about this topic and polls, i do comment in everyone i see because i personally feel its time for one.
But i don't think they want the franchise to go MMO as the stand alone games sell like hot cakes regardless if there are huge changes to it or not.
Also i havnt (correct me if im wrong) seen a nintendo game based on PC that is mainstream (zelda, pokemon, mario) that actually is not third party done.
IF a mmo would come out it would be console based, and i don't think the WII's hardware could handle a full MMO based gamed as big as pokemon (correct me if im wrong).
I will wait for the day that it will happen, have played the third party ones but still, a 3D pokemon would be a money maker regardless of what people will say for all ages.
well nintendo don't make mmorpg, pc game, and I dotn' think there's a mmorpg nintendo console game.
If Nintendo DID ever do such a thing it'd be WiiWare Only
I really hope so. The whole Pokemon thing was a sack of shit marketing tactic aimed at 5 year-olds. By the time they reached 6, even they knew it was a sack of shit. I had to laugh at the "deep, deep" lore comment, as I've seen more depth in a saucer of water.
I would hate a "Pokemon" MMO, because it's such a good game and would make for a great MMO, but the name would attract the completely oposite of what a good MMO community should be.
I would love for someone to make a western version of Monster and Me though. I played it years ago, but it got extremely repetative and most of the game just wasn't very deep (F2P). The Pet system, was absolutely amazing though. Tons of different pets, evolutions, and different stats depending on how you raised your pet. Someone could have the same type of pet as you, but have no where near the same stats as your pet. There were formulas how to raise the best pets, but they weren't perfect and the systems to raise it were so complicated, it was almost impossible to follow that forumla perfectly.
I've always like the Pokemon games, but I would hate an MMO with Pokemon in the name. Or Digipets, or w/e pet based games there are out there. Alot like how Yu-Gi-Oh is a great card game (well used to be anyway), but the name associated with it sucks.

In the eastern(japan, korea and such) there's digimon masters and monster farm online that are similar to what your thinking I think.
Both of them have a companion monster that you train and fight with it meaning you command your monster to fight.
But both of them are IP blocked and european/western countries can't play without proxy and to me thats not worth it.

try this and see if is your cup of tea
now: GW2 (11 80s).
Dark Souls 2.
future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
"Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
NOTE: I've only played Red & Blue and some of Pokemon Stadium (loved the first generation, but quit after that as it felt like a Digimon hybrid).
I don't see how the game would work. I say that because it's mostly a head-to-head PVP type of game, such as 1v1 and maybe 2v2. I guess they could think outside of the box and go the Final Fantasy route and have 5+ players versus NPC(s).. instead of the usual 1v1.. and maybe go for a Guild Wars type of game (where there's a lot of players, a big world, but isn't massive as far as player interaction goes, opposite of World of Warcraft and 25+ raids).
Then there's questing and all that. How is that going to play out? And tournaments?
That said I would definitely play! I love exploring and trying to find rare things in MMOs
Yes please! Do want! Pokemon MMO would be awesome!
An open world where pokemon roam and you have to capture them into pokeballs and level them up and get to choose their skills and extremely rare pokemon will be impossible to capture (almost).
This would be awesome!
Idea isn't bad huge fanbase but who's the target audience? Thinking about a Pokemon MMO you'd have to make it a sandbox with themepark elements which is incredible difficult.
The biggest concern would be:
Skills and or levels for your Pokemon?
PvP and or PvE based?
Group play? Pokemon is mostly based at 1 on 1 you they'd have to introduce some tougher Pokemons ->can see a lore problem here.
Death penalty? Pokemon's aren't dying they're beaten so theres has to be some sort of a pokemon cooldown.
Socalizing? You're collecting and progressing with your Pokemon but again wheres the group play?
It may be a good idea on paper but a really really hard thing in the reality. I'd like it with a mature setting (monsters instead of Pokemon) but thinking it would become more like Hello Kitty Online and stuff like that.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play."
"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
Theres a few difficulties that I forsee:
Because theres sooo many pokemon the list of character models will be off the roof
People will also be expecting the pokemon to actually say their names as opposed to just making sounds adding to the budget
Unique character animations will have to be done for every single pokemon to make them different from each other
animations will need to be done for every single move
they might have to fundamently change the game system from turn based combat to real time which changes entire moves completely (atm I can't imagine how it would work otherwise)
The pokemon themselves would need a serious rebalance in order for them to all be used competitively
Other game mechanics would need to be changed in order for them to make sense in real-time combat such a flying pokemon being able to dodge ground attacks evn if the ground attack is some form of projectile.
There isn't much room for a crafting system apart from just being cosmetic items etc
What will the bosses be? Surely they can't be legendary pokemon because every person in the group will be attempting to capture it. Can't be trainers unless the aforementioned turn-based gameplay is altered
Legendary pokemon themselves would need to be rebalanced or definately severely restricted on when you can use them otherwise it takes away the balance to the game.
Doesn't pokemon work down a linear path? how would they adapt it into a world where your free to roam?
How would questing work without becoming abit too repetitive?
There are a few other things I can think of but I hope Im making my point that as good as it might sound, is it actuallypossible without alienating the current pokemon fanbase or current mmo players.
Haven't you heard? Nintendo recently shut down an unoffical pokemon fan based MMO.
I personally would enjoy one of those myself. I think it could be a lot of fun, but do to copy rights.. I don't think one will happen for a while.. but here's to hoping eh?
