Starting off with the mother of all grinds to max level, huge death penalties, wide open PvP, and bots running rampant made every other MMO I've played since seem so easy and tame.

Haha, ironlevi has my sentiments exactly. Played Lineage 2 during its open beta thru chapter 1, my first MMO. Played at least 30+ MMO's since then, almost every major release, and nothing is really like the Lineage 2 I remember. Dying once = losing 8 hours of XP made it so much more hardcore than today's "hardcore" games like Darkfall. I remember fighting farmers on Talking Island, who had intentionally de-leveled their characters but kept the power of the special attacks.
Go!

First for me it was Asherons Call. I beta tested for about 6 months ('98/99) and played for about 2 years after release. After becoming an Advocate (In Game Player Support), I played free for about a year. Most games I've played since have been on the same principal. Beta test, then support .
My Favorite of all time is Eve Online. Beta tested that one as well, but it was incredibly complex. A few years later, I got into it and played for 2 years straight. Forever changed my view on PVP.
In this MMO you had to do a special project given to you by a higher level tutor player, then you could advance beyond level 10(?), then ten levels later another one and so on. It was a great MMO, full of lore and social interaction.
Everquest around 01/02 but i didn't play pass the free month as i just couldn't get into maybe it was the server i was on but there wasn't many help players.
Star Wars Galaxies is the first MMORPG i played and the one i played the most. I loved the skill based system as i could switch what i want to be without making another character. love the TEF system. loved the crafting and player cities. The only draw backs were the bugs and not much to do if you didn't want to craft, pvp or do the Jedi grind.
For five years I was an Everquest I Customer , then 1.5 years on SWG then I went with Number 1 WoW . Tried Eve ,LOTRO, STO. Beta tested others , currently Lego Universe.
Neverwinter Nights AOL 90s, I'd almost stay Gemstone, but I am not sure text based counts.
parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
I had a blast for the first year playing it when i was a total noob, just exploring and meeting other people and all that. then the 2 next years i wasnt a noob anymore but addicted ^^ Didnt know there was other games like it back then :P But now i know better, hehe.
Before i was really active outdoors with sports and shit, then i moved and all my new classmates were gamers and dragged me into WoW when it came out, was fun though. But i wished i had known about MMO's earlier :P Sounds like it was so much better before, but everything is always better in "the old days" it seems.
Played pretty much every MMO that has come out after wow, tryed some older ones aswell.
not sure if i consider it an MMO but Phantasy Star Online for the Sega Dreamcast. then was Everquest Online Adventures for the PS2 played EQOA for years really fun group grind game and excellent community.

Fun times back in the day pre-UO---about 1996 for me. Old-school mmorpg.
First for me was Ultima Online

Lord of the Rings Online
That's it.
Neverwinter Nights AOL 90s, I'd almost stay Gemstone, but I am not sure text based counts.

anarchy online for a 3d game.
archmage and archspace before that.

Underlight!! Pre-EQ. Was a REAL Role Playing game.. RPing was mandatory and monitored by the GMs.
Loved it and then a whole group of us went off to EQ together (from the first EQ beta).
No game I have played since (and I have played most of them) has come close to the indepth role playing of Underlight.
Talking of costs (well someone was) wasn't Meridian 59 really really expensive.. seem to remember that was why I didnt get into that one??
Ultima Online from release in 97.
World of Warcraft =/
