Thinking about getting back in game, downloaded trial. HORRIBLE FPS

So with the new expansion being released, and some decent reviews, I was thinking about giving AoC another try. I was in a prelaunch guild for this game, and highly anticipated a game which flunked pretty bad imo at launch. I couldnt stand the bugs (the lag didn't help too much either).  I actually bought a whole new computer setup just so I can play the game (at the time)

My setup is as follows:

 C2D E6750 @2.7ghz

4GB G.Skill DDR2 RAM

EVGA GeForce 8800GTS Superclocked Edition PCI-E

300GB HD @ 7200

Now, i downloaded the trial because I didn't want to sub unless I saw some improvement. Thusfar, the game is almost unplayable. My FPS is choppy as all hell, and I can't stand seeing my game look worse than a flip book. I remember there being lag when I first played, but there was most definitely not lag this bad.

The only thing that has changed since playing at launch is that I upgraded to Windows 7 64bit (from Vista 32). I made sure to upgrade my drivers, and my computer is clean as a whistle.

I cant imagine why I would lag so much worse than I did at launch. You would think things got optimized more. Does anyone have any idea why I'm getting terribly choppy gameplay in Tortage?

    2 Things:

    1. What resolution are you playing at?

    2. What are the actual setting you have in game? Are you running DX10 everything turned on or a mixture of features?

    5 things to try out

    1. Lower the view distance down to say 2000m

    2. Turn Shadows down + from character only, same with reflections for the water.

    3. Turn off advanced grass

    4. Set AA to x4

    5. Trying playing on Medium setting and see what you get

Control+alt+F should bring up FPS (if you didn't know already)

The weakest part is your graphics card, I would think will a medium setting some stuff on high you should see maybe 20FPS

Reading through this might help, similar system to yours :)  http://conanvault.ign.com/wiki/index.php/Age_of_Conan_Video_Optimization_Guide

Between the 9600GT used in the above link and your card some overall differences can be seen here and then can sumize a rough better guess on AoC performance with your card.

    Hope helps.

To update, I just adjusted everything you told me to do, also dropping my resolution to 1240x1240 (or whatever it is).

Same thing, horrible fps. It'll spike up to 65 and drop to 4 and keep doing that to the point where the game is barely playable. My rig is 2 years old, I should not be getting this.

OP: Their implementation of DX10 was shoddy at best and intentionally half-assed at worst. You might try running DX9 if you are not already.  I unsubcribed and wrote them a nasty opinion about all the bugs et cetera. Many of the glaring bugs and issues with feats that were present just after launch, STILL have not been fixed 2 years later.

Basically what I am saying is, AOC is a piece of shit. Your computer is fine. I haven't the slightest clue how it got "good reviews." I'm considering looking into it and blacklisting anyone who gave the expansion a good review so I can ignore them in the future.

    Completely disagree.

DX10 works for nearly everyone who plays AoC, very few have issues with it (including myself).  Additionally AoC is one of the few games where DX10 is used properly and makes a real difference to the gfx.

AoC is not a peice of shit, it's an excellent game and honestly has always pretty much worked fine for me.  Blacklist me then dude as I think the expansion is easily one of the best ever made!

The game runs sooth as butter on my comp. and the game is stunning I might add.

Have you downloaded the latest graphics drivers, if not do it NOW :-) it can really make a difference.

Good luck getting it to work ... its worth it.

Sorry to hear it OP. I recently went back and run dx10 and max everything. I get 40's FPS in day time Tortage, 80's in instances. The worst FPS so far was in the new Gateway 20 to 40 area. With the new larger zones, my FPS dropped to around 17. I decreased my view distance to get it back to the 20's-40's. No big flux anywhere with my FPS though. It stays fairly constant in most areas.

One interesting thing I found was that the shadows, if they are on, work best in high. If I change shadows to low, medium or ultra high, my FPS dropped to 5 in Gateway. The hardest part of AoC is getting your settings correct on lower powered rigs.

With DX10 enabled on medium settings, I get 25-30fps on Tortage.

With DX9 enabled on high settings, I get anywhere from 30-60fps.

So something is definitely wrong on your end.

Yeah I don't know what is wrong, I used the same card for a while and got around 40-90 FPS depending on where I was. I noticed FPS does largely depend on what zone you're in, I don't think they've finished optimizing the game yet. I do know in the next patch there is a client performance improvement update going in but so far I think it's just for Khitai area's as most people will be playing there, so it's a more pressing matter.

My old computer that I used the 8800 on I got in 2007, was a quadcore 2.4 per core.

Hokay - we have allmost simular computers and I had same problem. In fact most people do ...

But there is an easy solution to all this, but most people wont litsen and go on their way trying voodoo magi instead of this easy fix.

Anyway  -  FIRST off. On patcher window - click options ( ! ).

Then from that window in left corner you will see option to download textures for certain areas. There is a reason fro this but the tecnical part of the story is not important. Important part is - download textures in area where you are now ! For lvl 20+ ist cca 1Gb of data or more. Normaly game DLs new textures every time you see something new. This is much faster.

Then before you start in patcher use high resolution textures !

    Start the game.

Go to settings, video - choose HIGH DETAILS ( this is very important as all other mods are buged and in fact give crappy FPS ). Turn shadows OFF. Dont touch ANYTHING ELSE. Just leave it like that.

Now go and enjoy your game.

40+ FPS in open steppes in front of great wall Khitai.

Oh and BTW Tortage is same as allways. Best part starts after lvl 20 when you go to Khitai and great wall ;)

Just did what you told me, still the same exact results as before. No matter if I drop all my settings completely, or play on super high, the fps jumps up to 150 and drops to 3 consistently while I walk.

    I'm getting pretty fed up.

  • SigilaeaSigilaea Member Posts: 317

My system is a little older than yours and it runs fine. I had an 8800GTX card and my fps spiked like yours. Turns out the card was defective and overheating. I only saw this on AOC though. My other games ran fine. I replaced the card and I get 44 fps on max settings now.

    4 Gb Crucial RAM

Maybe a couple years ago, it runs like a dream now.

I suspect the OP has something going on in his background eating up processor cycles, or a driver conflict.  His rig doesn't really leave much wiggle room if something isn't playing nice.

  • MichielMichiel Member UncommonPosts: 235

OP: It's not your rig, I'm 100% sure. I played at launch with the same rig I have now. Could play Medium settings with a couple of things turned down at launch. I came back 5 weeks ago I had to turn down a whole lot more and still get worse FPS than I had. And now the expansion has hit there is global lag (doesn't matter where you go; even old content), instances (as in zone instances) collapsing, insane low FPS and loading screens for 10 minutes or longer if I get stuck in it.

So with the same rig I went from 35 FPS at launch, to 15-20 FPS 5 weeks ago to 5-10 FPS right now with the expansion. Although I still enjoy playing I have to agree with you OP; FC needs to do some serious optimizing, it's not your rig's fault and to conclude AoC runs like a piece of shit.

EDIT: I don't really mind the crazy lag as it means people are returning to check out AoC (which is a good thing) and the server just can't handle them.

I had crazy low FPS after the expansion until I realized it was downloading a ton of stuff in the background. You probably already checked that its not latency but just FPS, but if not, see main menu in game, Misc, background Download.

I also defragmented the HD, but u probably already tried that. I should have done these one at a time to be scientific, but didn't.

Try the official forums too, there are some tech savvy and AoC savvy techies there.

I have a worse computer than the OP and I can play on "medium" with an average 45FPS.

Being in one of the largest guilds on Crom, only 2-3 members have had trouble with their FPS which were solved by dropping their graphics... however you say its the same when everything is on the lowest.... odd.

I don't think you can just blame the game on this one mate.

Okay, I lowered it to the bottom background download speed, and my fps improved. Its still a bit laggy, but nowhere near as bad as before.

Could we possibly assume that because I downloaded the trial, its constantly downloading content in the background? Kind of like what Evequest II's trial does?

My son has a 2.4 Ghz Core2, 8800GT, 2GB RAM, and Windows7 64 and it is running fine on medium settings.  Someone in our guild was having the same problem as you and it turned out to be his anti-virus program.  Have you tried turning your anti-virus off then running the game?

Apparently it downloads stuff in the background whether you are on trial or subscribed. However, after playing a day or two after expansion, it seems to have 'caught up' for me.

Seems like a partial culprit. The downloading in the background. Internet speed can affect FPS. i would try downloading the whole lot and then testing it out.

I think Astoria called the most probable cause.

I would also just try out the DX9 client on medium setting and work from there for starters.

Double check latest GPU drivers installed 197.45: Windows 7 64-bit and that you are not using the old 32 bit drivers.

If you have an Nvidia based motherboard or otherwise update the motherboard drivers too.

Without playing the game try a speedtest and pingtest and see what results you get. Also if you are using a router try a direct connection.

If you use Cable Internet (coaxial connection) or ADSL (via the phoneline) you may want to call your Internet Service Provider to see if there are any issues reported recently in your area. Do you use a VOIP phone and if by chance is there someone talking when you are playing? Always best to rule out stuff when troubleshooting. PS I work for my ISP and often speak with people (or used to) that had issues with lots of different mmorpg's and we found sometimes the problem was actually us at work :)

I would just like to say ever since dropping the Background download speed my FPS has been pretty consistent in the 60s at high settings, 1280 resolution and no shadows enabled.

That is really good to hear, hope it works out for you. I would gradually turn up some stuff till the FPS works out for you. Most setting take away 2-6 FPS. I am thinking of doing my own video guide for optimization just goto find the time.
