I've been having the same problem for a solid year or longer now.
I miss virtual world mmo's. There was no ''end game'' to them. Now people are like ''what kind of end game does it have?'' , we all know this means ''does it have dungeons i can grind gear in for eternity to have gear to get more gear'''.
I miss player cities. Player vendors. Traveling to my location . Anyone remember teh 10 minute waits for the ship in old swg? Sure that was excessive but you probably get what im saying. Like i said above, what I miss are virtual worlds. Mmorpg's need to be taken back to that virtual world instead of this action adventure shit they shove down our throats and have been for years now. Was fun playing in games that were what i consider untamed.
at least you got a good few years out of the mmo genre, I felt that burnout the minute I stepped into the mmo genre which was late 2007, I have never played a game more than two months and thats like a maximum, my first game, after that it ranges from 1 hour to 1 month if I am lucky, and its not because I am just casual, they just dont have anything that holds me
I lost hope in the mmo genre and I am back in single players games, if you want advice on which single player, dont ever go to dragon age, very bad game, try mass effect 1 before 2, both great games but mass effect 1 has the better story by far, bioshock 1 and 2, great games but sadly same pattern 1 is much better than 2 in story but not in gameplay. also one game I was surprised that I liked is the witcher, get the normal one and then upgrade for free to fix all the bugs to the enhanced edition.
goodluck man and I hope to you and all of us to find a cure to this dangerous diesease
Your post lost any credibility when you called Dragons Age a very bad game .
i think i'm burning out myself. Games are just grindy and as I get older it just is less fun to do the same motions.ot sure what to do myself, I feel the same way with console games too.

Dragon age was horrible But I only played it for console , heard it was a diffrent game on pc , I prolly should have bought it for PC : (
I haven’t actually played an MMO longer than a month since...oh man, I can’t even remember! To be perfectly honest I’ve moved from playing MMO’s to observing MMO’s from the side-lines. Some single player games are entertaining and I dabble in them when I feel the gaming urge, but for the most part my virtual worlds fix has been pacified with books. Even though I can’t interact with those worlds, at least they are far more fulfilling...
Its time to put your MMO love in hybernation. And maybe wake it up in 3-4 years when real MMOs return. Until than ... you can play single player games - they are actually same thing as todays "MMOs" except there is no carrot dangling and no subscription. And yes they are actually fun.
I for one am just not easily entertained anymore. When I was young I could play a game for hours even if it was garbage. Now nothing entertains me anymore, it takes such a massive effort that nothing ever stacks up. Even when I go to play single player games like Dragon Age or Mass Effect I get bored really fast and they cannot hold my attention.
So you could be bored with MMOs due to runaway expectations.
All men think they're fascinating. In my case, it's justified
I have been experiencing what many would term "burnout" for several, several months. I did the standard fare fix for this malady promoted by most gamers... I unsubbed to every mmo that I was currently playing and took a couple months off. For clarification purposes, I did not / do not subscribe to multiple mmo's at the same time, rather I game hop from one to the other, month to month. I have been doing this for a while, which is what made me think I was suffering from burnout in the first place.
ATM, I have no desire to return to any mmo currently on the market. I mean I have that feeling of nostalgia when I think back on titles like DAoC, or AC, Eve, or even the 800 gorilla- that- must- not-be-named. But, I no longer hear the siren song beckoning me to return. I'm afraid that I am no longer the gamer I used to be!
Has anyone else experienced (or are currently experiencing) this change of gaming perspective?
I am not surprised. Most MMOs are way to similar and never give you that "new game" feeling. I don't think a few months is enough to get it back.
Another year and a different game should work, like World of darkness online or maybe Guildwars 2.
Just relax, you notice when you want to go back. To play and not have fun is to truly waste your time.
I had 6 months off myself last year and I wasn't nearly as burnout as you. I also had 3 years after Lineage, played that far to much and suddenly it wasn't fun anymore.

most MMO's on the market are either old or completely horrible games
so yeah, no shit. I am surprised you lasted this long
I'm just picking up a game, playing it for like 5 - 10 minutes per day max and then dropping it in like 5 days. Nothing is as good anymore. I can kill mobs solo, that's essentially it. Weak stories, boring world design, stupid characters.
None of the actual active community seems to notice and when I was last playing WoW specifically nobdy wanted to group. They've engineered their game so you don't have to talk to people at all anymore.. and even if you do most of the time they're on a different server so becoming friends is just an impossibility... and that's if they're worth talking to at all.
Very similar situation myself. Afraid RDR doesn't appeal to me in the least either. Tried at least 8 new FTP MMOs with no long lasting candidates. What's worse is that there isn't an announced MMO release that I'm remotely anticipating.
There really should be a proper diagnostic for this; perhaps MMO depression?
I call it gamer ADD.
Also, I don't believe it's just the dev's fault, it's also our fault because we are ALWAYS looking for the next best thing, to the point that we don't stick around for what we thought was the next best thing, and don't give anything a fair shake anymore.
I find it hard to blame players for becoming bored with games when almost every single one since Wow has been nothing but a variation of leveling treadmill. Sadly this includes the game Wow itself which I found a brilliant game until they decided to focus on the obsessive compulsive members of their player base.
Here is an annoying analogy to help explain my point. To take my daily exercise I'm given the options of a treadmill, a stair lift, or a stationary bike, I'm going to pick none of the above, and instead go outside and go jogging, where at least the scenery f***ing changes.
Or another one. Various restaurants can add whatever fancy schamncy toppings and names to a hamburger. At the end of the day it is still just a hamburger. It is unfair to blame the customer for deciding they are sick of burgers and want something else for a change.
The problem I have is that everyone loved some game in the MMO genre at some point, otherwise why have we stuck around so long? So why aren't we playing THAT game that did it for us? Why the need for something 'bigger and better'?
Taking your exercise analogy, if you live in the same town for a long time, the scenery during the walk will only change slightly based on the path you take.. But eventually you are going to see everything possible in your town during that exercise. Are you going to move to another town/city because you've seen the entire town during your walks?
Of course not, don't be ridiculous. By stating I would do none of the above I meant I would forego MMORPGs all together and find something to do in THE REAL WORLD. If I get bored with jogging I can just switch to racquet ball, swimming, or mountain biking. Until virtual worlds can, at least somewhat, properly reflect the freedom of the real world I see no reason to continue to waste my time and money on them. AND if I find myself with a hankering for some video game enjoyment I will sit down to a quick single player or limited involvement online strategy game or first person shooter, rather than an overblown, pay per month, treadmill time-sink.
No doubt you can choose another activity, but I was talking about the scenery.... Although the scenery can be nice in racquet ball and swimming, but it can also be frightening in the latter, some people shouldn't wear bathing suits.

I too feel the same way ,so do most of my friends. I have been game jumping for almost a year. Just recently I tossed out all on my game CDs/DVDs to keep me from going back . I kept 1 ( 800 lb gorilla ) but I never play anymore. I think its all the same ole thing wrapped in a different box . Same gameplay ,quests, ect... Thats just my opinion.
So with that said I have been trying a new genre of game ,just plain ole RPGs . Been playing Torchlight and have decided to play diablo 3 if it ever comes out. I'm just not sure if I will ever have the same love affair with an MMO like I used too.
Most of us veteran MMO gamers are right there with ya... The problem is, game companies want to be like Blizzard and they've put all their efforts trying to copy WoW, but with pvp being the main focus and well every one of those WoW clone mmo's that's come out since 2004 have failed... MMO's nowadays are a mix between fast paced FPS games where the basic concept is one big roller coaster ride to the top and the gameplay is nothing more than a solo grind fest to the top.. Once you get there, there's nothing to do but repetitive mindless PvP or running instances over and over for end game loot.. The problem with MMO's now is that they are just to damn easy..
Dev's are told by the greedy corporate Bosses to make their new MMO appealing for illiterate whinny kids and moron FPS gamers.. There is a much larger group of whinny illiterate kid and moron FPS gamers than there are true intelligent fantasy MMORPG gamers... So Devs would be inclined to cater to this crowd and give these fans what they want before showing the true fans of mmorpgs some love...
A game like Everquest literally grabbed you by the balls or HotBox and pulled you in to all it's wonder and glory.. That game was the most addicting MMORPG I've ever played.. I'm an avid fantasy reader and logging into EQ for the first time was like picking up a new epic fantasy series for the first time.. I loved every moment of it.. After getting home from work, I'd take a shower, eat some dinner, and escape from reality for at least a few hours during work days.. On weekends, I'd devote one entire day to EQ.. Friday nights were usually party like a rockstar drunken night of fun, which meant Saturdays was my stay at home while sobering up EQ day... I'd devote the latter half of Sunday to EQ and the first half I'd hang out with friends and relax.
Ever since my playing days of EQ were over, I've spent 7 years searching for it's replacement.. WoW held my interest for a year, EQ2 held my interest for a while off and on again for about a year, DAOC held my interest for 6 months or so, Vanguard kept me busy in Beta and until SOE took over... But other than that, no other MMORPG has excited me or pulled me in really since EQ.. It may just be me getting older, but I don't think so.. Hell, I just started playing KOTOR last week, lol. So I don't believe it's me.. There are 3 mmo's coming out within the next year that may be the answer Rifts: Planes of Telara, SW:TOR, and Project Copernicus all have potential.. Although, I understand TOR looks like another single player rpg with mmo elements, but we'll see about that one.. The other two sound like MMO's that are going back to rediscover their roots and which better way to do so than to take some notes from the greatest 3d fantasy MMORPG ever created, Everquest... Alot of you will laugh and ROFL Your FAO but whatever, I don't care... WoW is not the greatest mmo ever created.. It's the easiest.. There's a huge difference..
Oh by the way, MMORPG.COM Mods, this is not a flame post since I'm not directing this post to anyone in particular, you can't WARN me for flaming since I'm not talking to anyone in particular... I'm just making a true statement and can't be warned for speaking freely! I get sick of being warned for flaming when I'm just speaking my mind.

I'm not sure why you think anyone would take your post as a flame. What you said seems very logical to me and is simliar to how I feel.
I didn't think so with a couple of my posts in which I received a warning from MMORPG for flaming. I just don't like FPS gamers who switch over to MMO's and try to change and mold MMO's to fit their FPS playstyle. It's sickening to me.. I'm sure fans of FPS games wouldn't appreciate fans of MMORPG's trying to change fps games to corporate more mmo elements like grinding, harsh dealth penalties, exploring, etc.. We won't screw up their games and I'm one of many true MMORPG fans who hate fps/mmo hybrid gamers that come to our genre and screw up our games to fit their fast paced fps preference...
I state my opinion and I get warned for flaming, lol.. That's what I was referring to...

I can totally sympathize/empathize with the OP. I have switched between 800 lb gorilla, Vanguard, EQ2, AoC, and Fallen Earth over the past year and cannot stick with any of them. Currently I am only subbed to the gorilla and FE, but have no desire to play either.
At the recommendation of one of my co-workers I picked up the original Bioshock and beat it. What an amazing story and world those devs created. Now, on the recommendation of the same co-worker, I have picked up the original Knights of the Old Republic...and I am loving it. After I finish it, I might have to give Mass Effect or Dragon Age a try given these recent successes with Single Player RPGs.

Bioshock has one of the best stories I ever saw, but mass effect comes really close, so if I were you I would go for mass effect 1 first, great game and I am still on my opinion that dragon age is a very bad game with an even worse done to death story(the one thing I liked about it was the diffrent starts for each race/class)

We all feel jaded after a while, but if MMO’s offer nothing new you are never going to be able to get that feeling of excitement back. MMO’s are in stasis and until we start seeing some innovation, not just a new colour palette for the graphics that won’t change.
I think burn out is healthy. It lets you know something is wrong. I've played WoW for 4 years. I started playing it as a way to reconnect to an old friend that I had grown apart from. He was very much hooked by wow and I was pretty much a fps type gamer. And after a while I started playing the game more for enjoyment than just as a way to chat. After we both leveled up, I got into raiding. At the same time he started getting a lot of wife aggro and finally quit the game to deal with that. I keep raiding for the next 2 years. Along the way I went from a raiding with family friendly causal guilds to more serious hard core guilds. I also tried to not over do wow like some of my friends would do. I known people who get divorced or lost their job because they were playing WoW way to much. In fact it seemed that in the end most people I was playing with didn’t have a job and played wow all the time.
At some point I started getting burn out. It started with me noticing more small problems with the game. I also started getting more elitist and picky with those I would group with while at the same time I started getting nostalgic for the way things used to be. Like when everybody just seemed to like to play and didn't really care about how geared you wearing and when grouping up didn't take effort it just sort of happened when you needed it too. I finally decided to quit when i got full T8.5 gear so i could get a figureprint sort of as a trophy to so for all the time I had put into the game. I quit wow in early August of 2009 and i realized why I had developed the burn out. I had lost my sense of balance to my life. I had let a lot of things go while playing wow. And I was playing a lot more of it than I had realized. My house became cleaner. I exercised more and I had a lot more time to just doing everything that needed done and all the other things I like to do.
My teenage son asked me if I would re-subscribe him to wow so he could kill the Lynch King last February which I did. After thinking about it I decided to do the same as I really think that is the true end game of WoW “story." We got back into raiding at first just pugging ICC to collect frost emblems and get a better gear score. After get to the frost wing it became apparent I needed a set guild raid in order to progress in ICC. I then started raiding with a guild at their schedule. After 4 weeks of this I was burned out again. My guild merged with another guild when college ended. I decided its time to take a break from wow. My son was also getting tried of Wow so i though lets try a new game. I subscribed to Age of Conan and I'm having a lot of fun playing the way I did when I first started WoW. Everything is new, people are friendly and I'm having a blast.
As far a downing the Lynch King, well I might try to do it on a weekend pug as my subscription still has a few months left before it expiries and if not I'll just watch the youtube video of his death. I though about just trying to play wow as a casual player but after leveling a new shaman up to 20 and playing a 49 druid, I realized it wasn't the same anymore. Wow has just lost its magic for me even the new leaked expansion video doesn't do anything for me. Its just time for me to more along or maybe I should have long ago. Burn out is a good thing. With out it I still would be spending most of my free time playing wow not realizing there are some many more games I can try and things I can do.
I really miss that "unknown" feeling that you get when you play a game for the first time. I especially had that when I played FFXI. I was a white mage and I ran straight outside of town to kill bees, worms, and bats. I ran up and started punching things (because I thought since I was such a newbie that I wouldn't have anything to use against them anyway) and did this for at least an hour or two before I realized that I had a "Cure" scroll in my inventory and an "Onion Rod" that I could use and equip respectively.
Even WoW and Lord of the Rings were like that for me. Little less for WoW, though...

This is what happens when you grow out of your MMO diapers, only to find there aren't any MMO 'pants'.
I'm running around naked right now, pooping all over the latest crop of FPS games. Maybe one day, I'll find some pants to wear.

They cripple the bird's wing, and then condemn it for not flying as fast as they.Malcolm X
