So...much...lag

I don't know if it's only me, but I just gave up playing, because I literally couldn't move. I would press something, then 5 minutes later it would do that action and keep freezing up every single frame. I can't even begin to explain how frustrating it is. I play on a brand new emachines flatscreen computer with a Radeon 9200 SE XTASY video card.

Has anyone else had this problem, and is there anything at all I can do to fix this? I can't trade it in unfortunately, I wish I could because City of Heroes is totally hopeless.

How much ram do you have?? If its below 512 mb i would recommend turning the graphics all the way to the minimum setting. Also playing on a flat screen computer doesnt serve as a clue as to why you are lagging.image The video card you have now isnt the best (pretty low on the scale) but should still be able to run the game.

I have 760 MB of Ram, but would it still help to turn the graphics down to the minimum?

Dunno how the games changed since I stopped playing it (Sept or October 04) but I never lagged at all, so this is news to me heh.

Update your Anti-Virus definitions, do a check if you have any viruses. Then download programs called Ad-Aware and Spybot (spysweeper also if you want to be more sure), then update their definitions, to a check and remove all the p0rn you have on your computer :)

Ooh, and dont forget to update your video card drivers ;)

I have Ad-Aware and Norton AntiVirus 2005. I frequently check the computer for viruses, and it's clean.

if not, then you should take your cpu to a technician or you might even try Format C:
    heh

hmmm could be your vid card i mean radeon 9200 is a bit old and if i am correct the 9200 can hanlde till directX 8. and most games run on 9 now so if you are running with latest directX maybe thats causing the problem.

    or

try the latest ati driver at www.ati.com

    or

maybe its your OS (what OS do you have btw?

I had the same problem...basically I have Nvidia graphic card...so I went to Nvidia.com and upgraded my graphics and it worked...

Right now, I have the video card my comp was packaged with and its nowhere near good enough, but when I got inot the beta of Coh, even though the colors were black whites and grays, there was no lag except by the Signature Heros (Where you get more powers etc.). I recently started playing again, but before i did, i upgraded my video cards driver. Now i can see the color, its normal now, but it lags like you wouldn't believe. I know exatcly how you feel. I went and deleted a whole bunch of files and programs from my comp (About half the space was freed up) and still nothing. I had recently run an adware, apyware, virus thing and i cleaned out like two unwanted programs. Still ntohing. That was until I discovered a weakness in the lag!!! If you press "Delete" during the game, the camera wil rotate above you. Press it as much as you can until the camera is directly over the heroes head. THe lag there is unbelievably absent. Experie=ment aa little by lowering the camera (With the "Insert" key) littl eby little until it starts lagging. THen press "Delete" again untilit doesn't lag so that the camera is some what angeld behind you and you can still see infornt of your hero. It works for me...^_^'

I believe what your experiencing is not lag but frame rate reduction.

Lag is caused by problems on the server side. Frame rate reduction is local on your computer.

If it was true lag, everyone on the server would be harping about it. Frame rate reduction can be fixed by increasing RAM, lowering display settings in the game, reducing the sound quality (IE turning off music, turning down or off sound effects) getting a better video card. Turning off other computer applications can also help.

your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't

hmmm....intersting....its probably my video card...BEcause every time I try to tone it down on the sound and graphics, theres no real change in the lag. Ill just need to get a better one completely. But the thing I suggessted works...I do it all the time...prolly because looking at the ground gives less work to my video  card than looking at 5 million buildings, the barrier thing, the sky, etc...Ah well, better start saving my pennies...^_^'

I played the game on my old PC which had P4 1.6GHZ, 256 SDRAM, GeForce MX 400 64MB and it didn't lag a lot. Only in crowded places.

yea, that isn't exactly the best video card ::::33::

Not sure if it could have a big effect, but possibly check on what version of DirectX you are using.  DX 9c I believe is the latest.

Particle effects can really slow an older video card down.  Turn them down to very minimal, or off even.  Also, disable shadows and change your sound options to Compatibility mode.  It may help.

i hope there is not alot i am going to get this game in a couple days to a week ^_^
  • sushimeessushimees Member Posts: 489

    I had a P4 1.6Ghz
    GeForce MX400 64MB
    256MB SDRAM

and the game ran totally perfect. At 800x600 resolution (and the graphics still look pretty cool I think) the game ran very good I think.

Also, isn't a Radeom 9200 SE an old card?

NCSoft and their "cheapest ISP bid" attitude is why you get lag. ALL of their shitty games lag because of this. I been in Lin1 since beta, L2 breifly, and now trying this dumb game only to find consistency with NCSofts lag, and their award winning, over the top, beyond comprehension SHITHOLE support! :)

Better to take your money to WOW or some other game that is more solid and has a company behind it that gives a shit about you. NC is not anywhere near that type of company. Greedy bastards is what they are! Yes, that means you captsturm, lordbrittish, et al.

Have at least 12 friends playing CoH, in all parts of North America, and none of us ever lag.  The worst it gets is after 3-4 hours of playing, there seems to be a memory leak issue for some.  Reboot, and it's gone.  And all of these people play on machines with vastly different specs, from high-end gaming PCs to 6 year old budget rigs; 2 friends even connect using dial-up.  The only problems the dial-up users seem to have is they cannot talk to us on Ventrilo at the same time they are playing (no real surprise there).

As for the last poster, well, it seems you must have had a few bad experiences.  Sorry to hear that.  Check out some anger-management courses perhaps?  However, in the majority, CoH has earned the reputation of being a smooth, mostly lag-free game to play.

I have very rarely have lag, and if I do it is on the weekends during peak hours. If you think WoW doesnt have lag, then you have another thing coming.

Besides reducing your in game settings (you can do this in game in the Options), look at your vid card properties. I would suggest truning off verticle sync, it really offers little in return for the performance hit you take. There are many resources out there with info on vid twinking, I know some of the CS & DoD fansites had stickied posts on how to increase frame rate performance.

I run a FX5600 w/ 256 mb on a AMD Athalon 2400 that 1 Gig RAM. I have Comcast Cable w/ speeds around 2.2-2.5 mbs. I almost never see any lag and my settings are maxed w/ a resolution of 1600x1200. On the other hand, I always use 800x600 in FPS games, I just like to make sure my shot is getting off first.

Good luck with the system twinking, it can be frustrating trying to figure out what is going on but once you get it sorted out, it's all good because now you know what your doing. Just don't be like me spending hours trying to eek out a couple of frame rates, you'll hold on to your sanity longer. ::::39::
