Adding to Star Wars: The Old Republic's bursting planet roster is one of Star Wars' most iconic planets: Hoth, as revealed in an exclusive preview over at Videogamer.com.

For those of you who might be wondering what Hoth's significance is so many thousands of years before the epic Battle of Hoth, the planet's claim to fame didn't begin with the centerpiece Empire Strikes Back battle, as it was also a battlefield in The Great War between the young Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire. The Republic suffered a great loss on Hoth, leaving the planet's icy desolate wasteland strewn with the husks of fallen machines of war, and with neither side capable of sparing the resources to recover their technology this left Hoth open as a ripe target for intrepid pirates and looters, who established a salvage operation on the planet.

The signing of the Treaty of Coruscant  saw both the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire's return to Hoth, however, where both factions are now eager to recover their technology, which has resulted in a number of engagements, despite the peace terms set by the aforementioned treaty.

This just brightened my day.  One of my favorite parts of the movies was on this planet.

I knew there was a 95% chance Hoth would be included...I'd been worrying about the other 5% lately. Now that it's confirmed I'll be sleeping like a baby tonight.

Cool, tho I didn't see that coming. I mean Hoth was in the movie era and I didn't know it would have relevance in the old days. It's also a surprise there are so many worlds! I mean, I am all for more and more different places.

This was allmost the most popular planet in SWG and it was'nt  even in the game. I knew they had to have this one.

  • CujoSWAoACujoSWAoA Member UncommonPosts: 1,781

Of cousre it wasn't in SWG.

HOTH IS A BARREN WASTELAND in the original trilogy. It would've been absolutely POINTLESS for SOE to have added it to SWG.

KOTOR? Well, KOTOR can and does make up whatever it wants to be "super badass" for players.

Thats why I like the original trilogy era more. Its bound by rules and anchors holding it down into a more feasible and believable experience. KOTOR is just Star Wars Chaos.

I really hope we don't see Endor.

After Tatooine and now Hoth its alright for Bioware to stop sticking planets from the movies in reguardless of if they fit the time period or game. Now I have nothing against Hoth and I'm sure a barren wasteland devoid of life is the place to play and Bioware have attempted to make it fit in with the world and story.  But too much more like this and it will look like they wanted to make Star Wars Galaxies 2 and couldn't get the licence so are making ToR into something very similar rather than go their own way.  Soon we will find the Sith Emporer is infact Darth Sidious dispite it not making much sence.

I really don't think we will see Endor. I don't think Endor had any relevance whatsoever until it was used as a base to shield the Death Star in the movies. I would also really hate to see Ewoks in the game... I get the urge to kill them every time I see them.

Hoth at least makes a little more sense because they have created some lore around it being a ship graveyard and the site of an epic battle.

"In The Old Republic, Hoth has no allegiance, no government, is contested by players from both factions"

Contested by players from both factions!!! ????

So can we see some dynamic pvp flipping of planets between the factions?  Could this be a bit of mythic's influence with the addition of some sort of rvr component to the game?  Will it be something like *groan* Wintergrasp?

Looking forward to finding out what it exactly means by "contested by players" hopefully it will be something epic and not yawn inducing.

Not that it's all that important, but think about it for a second, did the Rebel alliance build all of what they used on hoth to begin with? Not to mention EU which hoth has been mentioned in quite a few times. There' some sort of Dark Side aura that inhabits the planet, which would make sense for the sith for one to have an interest in it, as well as the Jedi.

That's what is great about an era such as this to base an MMO in, there's a slew of unplugged holes within Star Wars canon, which can easily be filled with a game of this depth. Lucas himself once said, he'd prefer the expansiveness of Star Wars to be filled by other media outlets, one of which being the games industry. Rather than on the big screen, as it's more personal that way.

I'd link it for you, but that would entail finding the quotes from the star wars insider I used to receive when I was a teenager, considering I'll be 32 this year, that may be quite hard.

What you call chaos I see as exploring something I always wanted to as a kid. Nothing is better than feeling at least a little young again.

Yeah I agree I just wonder how much input george has as it seems like this could be part of his vision.

Like I stated in the TOR forums I hope they force people to wear winter gear for Hoth and not let people run arond half naked.

I can feel your anger. This game is defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike this game down with all of your hatred, and your journey towards towards the Dark Side will be complete.

HAHA I remember when SWG was failing in everyones eyes

and this game was announced and everyone said yay this shall be our salvation, no more iconic classes and all that crap.

So hoth just happened to be coincidentally a major battle between sith and the republic.(aka shoehorned in)

The leader of the sith happens to look like a helmetless darth vadar....

the troopers seem to be in stormtrooper and clone trooper armor not old republic trooper armor.

    and classes are back....

and everyone that was complaining about such things in SWG are laping it up now when they are being given essentially the same crap from SWG

    sigh

  • McGamerMcGamer Member UncommonPosts: 1,073

It will all come out when beta starts. I am betting that there will be a record amount of leaks of info once beta starts. Then we will know for sure how sad TOR is going to be or not.

Not to bash, but SWG was originally designed around the Galactic Civil War.  The gaem launch was supposed to be after teh destruction of the first Death Star in Star Wars: A New Hope.

The next chapter would be from the Empire Strikes Back and should have included Hoth and Bespin.

Instead they decided to bank on the release of the pre-trilogy mvies by adding Kashyyk (sorry, never learned to read and write in Wookie) and Mustafar.

I was among the many who wanted to see Hoth in SWG.

Kudos to Bioware for this add.

Now give my budy Joe his Ithoriens and my Wookies as playable species and no body get hurt!!!!

This is well put. I'm hopeful for ToR though have a great many reservations. But having read this I can see how ToR is closer to NGE SWG's than Pre-Cu SWG's. So for all the people that quit over the NGE and hoped this would be something new and different it seems to be just more NGE. Which maybe wasn't a bad game, I sure played for years after it. But this sure wont be something too different and perhaps with more cartoonish graphics.

As for Hoth not just suddenly appearing between episode 4 and 5, I think you missed my point. It wasn't that Hoth didn't exist it was as the quote above states just how they shoehorned it in. An our rim world of no signiifcance is where a major space battle is fought. Sure stretch the believable but why fight in a system where there is nothing to be gained by victory. Congratulations Sir we have taken the Hoth system, shall we deploy the ground troops for an asualt on the republic base? What do you mean there is nothing down there except Wampa in a remote corner of the galaxy with no tactical significance and will 3500 years later be a planet people hide on cause its so insignificant.

Please stop comparing this game to SWG, its not, that fact that its not a sandbox game shouldn't be that surprising, Heck any game developed nowadays would be surprising to be a sandbox game.

Its a dead genre, its appeal is that of awe for the first month or 2, then nothing but endless ghost towns after. Classless games are also rare, their is a reason that even in P&P games you have classes, people like structure.

Yea this game is doing a lot of Retcon on multiple planets/species, but then again they kinda have to, the game takes place in a relatively unknown part of the timeline, and rather than just making a bunch of planets that didn't exist before or trying to make known planets "fit" in to their game with while maintaining the original storyline seems equally fail.

  • MykellMykell Member UncommonPosts: 780

Just remember there are only so many inhabital planets in the universe. Someone had to discover it and scout the planet out otherwise how would the Rebel Alliance have known it was a safe spot for a base? Maybe the planet has some resource needed to build advanced tech or it just has bucket loads of oil under all the snow. Hoth is perfectly reasonable.

I was not partial to this planet, though I do like it in the movie. Still, looking good.

I have to say the concept art for this game is brilliant - I wish the end result was closer to that.
