What is upsetting me is that I have posted about this before, and I have seen darkfall's hype go up along side my post. As soon as my post dies down the hype dies down, there is not enough exposer* (Spelling) to this game. If any of you are at all intrested read on.
I recently went to their fourms and spent about 4 hours looking at the fourms and the comments that the developers have made about their new game. The game yes i know has been in devolepment for over 4-5 years, but doesnt that just make the end-product a little better?
What game lets you design your own home, here is an example of what might be near to come:
"
Okay in my other two threads the subject kept turining toward housing. this one is devoted specifically to housing. Heres my solution to the housing issue.
Make private houses invulnerable to seiging but not to burglary. Have private houses have a decay rate like the old UO system except that the only character capable of refreshing the house is the one that placed it, not friends of the house. At the end of the decay time the house drops and all its contents are spread about the ground for all to take. Make clan and vendor houses vulnerable to attack and burglary but no decay rate. To prevent over crowding make the houses one house per account per server. That means you can only have one house on one server with that account. And make it so private houses CANNOT be placed in a clan controlled area. this will prevent clans from hiding in private invulnerable houses and waitng out the seige and keep private players out of clan affairs."
Note that I dont completly agree with this but it is something that might have a chance to be implemented, and people accually have a say in what will be in the game, many changes have been made already.
Along with the people who play this game, are willing to accept that other MMO's are also good, they want to incorporate them into their own. The following post which did in fact turn heads of the dev's and changes were made in correpondance to this post, tells me that the fourms are something used by the dev's to check up on what poeple want, and what they dislike:
"
I know Claus commented on the mailbox feature of WoW, but I think it has (at least) one other feature that would be interesting if used correctly in DFO.
Though the weapon/armor/defense skills really mean very little in WoW, they "skill up" much like I imagine DFO will. You use a weapon, it gains a skill point. The skill ups slow down as you get close to the cap yada yada. This is so bland, rewards people who just have "time", and is very unrealistic.
What is strange is that they have an almost entirely different way of skilling up their trades. You still gain points by "using" the skill, BUT you have to use continously more difficult "recipes" or whatever to keep gaining skill. This is not the case with the weapons... you can skill off of a level 5 mob when level 60. And... in almost every trade profession (or even first aid) there is a point where you have to go and "see the master" and perform some quest for him in order to continue.
Now, I never played UO, so maybe all of this is standard procedure, BUT I for one think that the second way is the best way to have skill advances. At certain points along the road you should hit a cap until you "visit a master" and perform some new and trying set of styles/abilities, etc. Since this game is going to have FPS functions, you could even have the old Zelda style where you have to perform an actual jump/slash/block/roll, whatever in the right sequence... and THEN the master will agree to teach you and you can continue to skill up more. The catch is... you have to start using your "new" abilities or something. You cannot just skill up with a "basic" swing, but with a new "combo swing" or some such. Without knowing how the actual combat system works this is difficult... in your basic "auto-attack + weapon skills" it would be easy, but it should also be possible even in a semi-FPS world.
My basic reason for this that in real-life it takes more then just time to get good at something. Practice does not make perfect... perfect practice with a good coach makes perfect. Say I wanted to learn swordsmanship... I could go buy a sword and start swinging at trees, battle dummies, or even my best friend who also wants to learn. We could do that for hours, weeks, months... and I STILL would not be a "master" or even an "apprentice" swordsman unless I just have some innate sword ability in my genes.
There should be more then just time invested into skill upgrades for weapons and the like. At first this would require NPC "masters" etc to teach you, but eventually PC's could be the masters and players could go to them to learn... but, a player should not just be able to swing a sword 1 million times and viola they are a master."
I have pre-ordered this game, and I expect whenever it is going to come out to be one of the best games that I have ever played. This mmo has the potential to be the "grandest" game out there, and I respect the time that the dev's need to make it, and I will not complain about its release date, and yes they have their patent and copywright yada yada. I hope everyone here at mmorpg.com enjoys this game and has some idea of what this game will be like. The thing that first attracted me to this game was the boating, where else can u control ur own boat, and do almost whatever you want.
If you have the time please fill out the small poll that I have included below to get some of your feedback on this matter.

Darkfall looks awesome but I wish they would updated more often
Sure Darkfall looks good, but DnL looks better and will be released sooner. So unless there is more from the devs, it becomes hard to hype it. I started following Darkfall a while back, but then I got caught up in the DnL hype. And I must admit that the DnL community is more active and alive. All this is just my humble opinion.
The reason for Darkfall Online's lack of hype is based around the fact it's an Open PvP game. Sadly even now PvP is still a niche market. The part of that market that likes Open PvP is even smaller. When a developer comes up with a game. That has ways of preventing the more annoying aspects of Open PvP. (i.e corpse camping and griefing) You'll more then likely see alot more people taking to PvP. Just as there are people compeletely against PvP. You'll find quite a few that are on the fence about it. They like PvP, but won't take part in in. Until certain conditions are met. (i.e Rules/Laws) WoW's PvP server are some of the most populated of the some odd 80+ servers they have. That should be proof enough that. If you come up with a solid design for Open PvP. That you'll garner the attention of the 'hardcore' pvps as well as those that are indifferent to it.
In War - Victory.
In Peace - Vigilance.
In Death - Sacrifice.
Was going to visit their website until i saw "open pvp"
No thanks, I get enough punk kids gank squading me in SWG as it is and thats limited PvP. I certainly will never play a free for all game. Not that Im against PvP or anything but there just seems to be too many jerks looking to ruin others' fun.
Maybe if it had an adult only server would i consider it.
Darkfall is a UO remake trying to do what Shadowbane did. (Albeit SB did it poorly)
Darkfall's primary feature is full and unrestricted PvP. But then they added an alignment fairy which flys in the face of full and unrestricted... Now I have to question why anyone would design an entire mmorpg completely around just PvP since a FPS shooter would offer more action in an hour then your likely to find in Darkfall in a week. (Not to mention FPS don't have a monthly fee...)
They are creating six unique races that are all perfectly balanced with each other. One could ask why have different races at all? Eye candy I guess...
In short it is likely to be good at providing for its very niche audience and I am curious to see if it releases... A direct quote from the devs:
CG: Darkfall is currently in internal testing, and we are slowly gearing up for external play testing. We are in a fortunate position financially, and having a knowledgeable and understanding community, we're able to take the time to try and get everything right before we release the game.
We plan to release Darkfall within 2004."

They missed that date and have been AWFULLY quiet as of late. The fans on the site have been getting annoyed as well. (Well some anyways)
They have an interesting idea and it will be interesting to see how they stack up against the other games out there, esp considering their a fairly small garage shop. ( http://df.warcry.com/scripts/columns/view_section.phtml?id=85&site=7
First, the game needs to be known by at least every 2/10 people, for it to hype good.
Second, I'll get back to you when that happens.

A game requires something to be hyped about. Apparently Darkfall lacks that. (its also looking very, very dead)
The point I was making is that, darkfall has nothing to be super hyped about.
Look at Dark and Light for example, it barely had any advertising at all, but at least they update every once in a while, and so many people know it by word of mouth. It is so hyped because there is actually features that make people go "HOLY WHOA!!!".
I don't really see anything about Darkfall that makes me get all excited an all, sorry.
my opinions:
1. we need more games like darkfall to be out there.
2. Posting a small update EVERY 6 MONTHS, NOT doing any Q&A with game sites, NOT doing any IRC chats, NOT posting any new screens regularly, NOT promotting your game at all is NOT good.
It depends what type of open PvP there is.
If there is no penalty for killing newbies, then sure I would stay away from it.
But if there was a harsh penalty for killing newbies, I would give it a try.

In mmorpgs there are some basic things that are deal-breakers for a lot of people. I think Darkfall's main problem is that they have too many of of these deal-breaking issues in their game.
You can say it's a niche game and that's true. But it doesn't just have one main niche feature. It has multiple niche features. To like the game a person has to fall perfectly into all the different niche's the devs have backed themselves into. And I'm talking about some very basic things here.
1. Combat will be twitchy. That's great for people who like it...but it's a deal-breaker for people who don't. And it shuts the door in the face of people who don't have high speed connections.
2. Open PvP. Great for the PvPers but it's going to scare a lot of people away.
3. 1st person view only. Some people love it, some people hate it. Like it or not, you have to acknowledge that not having an optional 3rd person view will drive away a lot of people.
4. Lack of uberness. A well developed character won't really be all that much better than a young character. Now personally I don't have any problem at all with that. In fact I love it. But it's going to put off a lot of people who expect to become gods if they put in a lot of time.
5. No attempt to mitigate random PKing. Last time I checked (and I admit it was a long time ago) they didn't seem to have any plans at all to try and mitigate RPKing. So people who worry about such things, assuming they read up on the game at all, will reach the conclusion that it's just going to be another gank fest.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not really trying to bash the game. I'm just saying that their problem isn't that they've gone in a niche direction. Their problem is that they're going in too many niche directions all at the same time.
To like the game you have to like all of the niche things they've incorporated. Someone might love open PvP...but find that the lack of uberness is a deal-breaker. Someone might love everything else but just can't stand not having a 3rd person veiw. And so on.
But this is just my analysis. I happen to be following another game that incorporates more than one niche features. So I can hope that games like this will find players.
