'Not to mention how some companies keep trying to weasel in CS's to make people pay to have an advantage in-game over over gamers who actually earn the xp, skills, or items normally.'
Except that this does NOT give players an advantage in-game. WoW opened up the floodgates with their TCG years ago. So far neither WoW nor SoE have altered game play with this sort of thing at least.
And this is why I don't play SOE games or any game that has you pay a sub than has a cash shop. Take aways from gaming, instead of having to earn the mount through fun experiences, now you buy it. No thx . Its a business model to rope in the young and naive gamer and slowly empty their pockets. Smed really driving this cash shop in SOE MMO's hard and it makes me wanna puke!
Way to go for SOE. Adding cash shop as first P2P publisher, not dropping subscription prices and asking prices for the cash shop items as if the game was F2P.
Very nice move from SOE, i mean how could they not do this?? i mean who in their right mind whould not want to get more $$$$$$$ i dont play EQ but i think it is a smart move after seeing how much money wow got in 1day from selling mounts...
To everyone out there saying how SOE sucks for doing this i have 1 thing to say : U SUCK get a life and stop whining u jelous babies...
it's quite funny, wonder if they're sitting down going "where's the money"... and their unpaid intern whispers "you have to have a lot of subscribers first"... heh...
i was amused when blizz did it, they had a new mount probably for a boss that was never implemented, couldn't be bothered putting it anywhere.. so put it on their store along with more pets (there's well over 100 non combat pets and mounts already in the game).
And they made a fortune on this jellyfishy looking crappy mount.... awesome, if you can do it, do it.
Funcom - Mythic - SoE - Cryptic will find out, they can't do it... (cryptic mostly because the store is shit and they don't have enough content for a game let alone selling stuff)
-munches popcorn-
as i said, if blizzard really wanted to roll in the money all they'd have to do is open more PTR servers and use them for the beta.... and ask for $30/£20 a pop while still remaining subscribed to WoW to join the beta...
then they can roll about in it... they won't do that though, unlike most MMO companies (especially recently).. Blizz have shown less stupidity while still shoving out content and updates... middle fingering any other MMO that comes close.
it's amusing, you gotta admit... especially with SC2 (beta's about done), Diablo 3 and Cata (beta's about to begin)... all there... and that other MMO they've been working on for the past, what, 3 years.
money money money money money

Of course they can do it. How much time did it take to develop the mounts? EQ2 has a healthy population right now, probably something like 250,000 these days. if less than half a percent of people (1,000) buy it they just made 25,000 for something that cost them very little to make.
What slightly bothers me is that SOE sells a mount on the RMT only a few Weeks after WoW did it.
Of course this is why they did it. They saw the amount of people willing to buy a mount from WOW and figure the cost / benefit of this move is profitable, even if a fraction of people that bought the WoW mount will buy their mount.
The Shadow Odyssey was the last expansion I bought.
Never going back.

No mount impacts game play beyond hey look a mount! It looks nice and it helps me get around!. Look I agree Sony and many other mmorpg company's are greedy.
However they like any other industry make decisions based on income. That is how company's work. If they did not act that way in this economy game would not come out at all in any shape or form. So no matter how much we bitch the old days of mmorpg company's is gone and out the window. They clearly can't survive on just pure subscription anymore. Look at Sonys last financial report for station 'SOE". It was not good at all.
I think we as gamers in this genre needs to put up or shut up. The gaming industry is changing based on the need to make profit not on our need to be Idealists.
I agree with what the poster above said, however this is not a perfect world and things change, we either change with it or leave the genre. Doesn't seem like we have much of a choice.
Problem is, these mounts do impact the game. If you read the details, they do give bonuses to physical or magic damage, depending on which version you buy. So you're paying for not only a cosmetic mount, but also an advantage over those who wont/cant spend the $25.
Clearly you are talking out of your butt again. Damn near every mount in the game to-date has a buff associated with it. While your on the mount. This mount does nothing new or better than any other mount.
Its becoming very clear you are just a troll and have never really played the game.
Actually played the game on and off for awhile, but nice try. No, im not an expert on the game by any means, but didnt know you had to be an EQ2 guru to have a little common sense. Yes, mounts do have buffs, but none that i recall that are identical to those stats, though i could be wrong there, but thats besides the point. You claimed it has no impact on the game, but ANY stat bonus = impact to the game, that was all.
As for the rest, as i tried explaining in another post, its not JUST about the mounts. Consider the mounts a bit of testing the waters to see what they can pull off. Do you really think SOE, Blizzard, or other companie swhich follow suit right behind WoW, just like SOE is, will stop at just mounts? They will continue adding more stuff at around the same, or higher pricetag, which offer, while very small individually, items that combined together give pretty big advantages to the people with the $ to spend. I could be wrong, they may stop at just mounts, but i highly doubt it, weve all seen how greedy some of these companies can get at times.
Im not against cash shops, in fact im all for them, but when you begin adding cash shops with stuff like this on top of your subscriptions, its getting out of hand. Leave the game impacting advantages to the F2P market, and let the P2P market stay how it always has been.
I am sorry but you are wrong yet again. You don't need to be EQ2 guru but you also don't have to spread lies. These mounts have no advantage over any mounts in game. I seriously suggest you play the game before making absurd claims.
Actually, wether you want to admit or not, they do have an advantage, which i again mentioned in a seperate thread on the topic. They may not have an advantage over a level 80 mount, but i dont see any level 80 restriction on these mounts, and last i checked, not everyone in the game is level 80.
Perhaps it wont impact you on a level 80 toon, but anything below that, it has at least some, although minor impact.
heh just talked about this in the guild, the mount have worse stats than a 10 min to get mounts in game, at lvl 60 iirc - earlier with some help....but for new players/alts its way better than anything you could get in game. but then again lvl 1-60 takes absolutely no time - but a mount like that maybe would cut off the time with another hour or so. but imo a waste of money, unless you like the looks for those 25$.
Funcom - Mythic - SoE - Cryptic will find out, they can't do it... (cryptic mostly because the store is shit and they don't have enough content for a game let alone selling stuff)

250k users would stress out the 21 servers eq2 has. On top of that, soe wouldn't be talking about merging servers again if there were that many players. Keep in mind the game released to about 300,000 players and has since cut the number of servers almost in half since then.
However I think the remaining population is so into the game they are somewhat heavy users of the cash shop.
Honestly, WoW did it, all the free 2 play mmos sell mounts. SOE does it and you guys get all asshurt? Look Sony has boned me multiple times from SWG and the Jedi issue. To putting Vanguard on the back burner, or when they nerfed the necro class in EQ1 to the ground. But lets not call them Scum of The earth for tryen to save a game that needs a budget. Everquest 2 needs the money to continue running the game adding content and pushing out expansions.
I may hate Sony but I refuse to let my anger for them cloud my logic. Whats WoW's excuse for selling mounts? They could give them away for free they make billions off that game.
Yet everquest 2 with a modest income does it to keep the game running pay its staff and yes make some profit and you wanna bitch like little girls? Thats complete asshattery and pure arrogance. Go to your basements and cry like the little girls you are. Everquest 2/SOE has many Americans employed in this country and the economy is int he shitter.
If them selling a few thousand mounts will help them keep people then by all freaking means they should do it. Just because Sony is selling consoles does not mean everquest 2 has a budget based on that. SOE runs on its own budget based almost purely off its income from Sony-station. The entire mmorpg lineup they currently control and in most cases ruin.
However Everquest 2 for most adults who actually give it a shot Enjoy the hell out of it. It's not what I wanted as the next step in the everquest IP when I left Everquest 1. However it stands on its own feet as a decent mmorpg. If it was as bad as people on this site claim, it would not exist. I'm not a Sony fan I'm just not in agreement with any of the complete asshats above.
I hate Smed and all his little bitch boys that help him ruin games, but as of yet they have not ruined Everquest 2.
After seeing how well it did for Blizz its not a big suprise. After all it is a buisness and they are in it to make money. You dont have to buy the mount and it doenst give you anything that a normal mount does so good for them.
just cancelled my station pass, hadn't been playing much anyway, this was just the last nail in the coffin for me. but if they got such a hard on to be just like wow let them have at it without my sub.
Games have been more or less $14.99 month since what? 2004/2005? This is a natural progression of things... so the price of the box hasn't changed for 10+ years, the price of a sub for 5+ years, yet games cost 5-10x more to develop...
Cash shops in Sub based games are inevitable, at least in the AAA arena's so it's only natural you'd see such things be implimented, especially after Blizzard screwed the pooch with their purchasables.
People need to just stop already... In the near future you can expect more games to follow this path and you can rest asure that subs will also increase... Anyone want to bet SW:TOR will be 18.99 or 19.99 a month? and it will STILL be the cheapest form of entertainment at less than $1 a day, hell I say make it $24.99 a month.
This is not a Sony issue it's an industry change... get used to it as there will be more to come...
I am surprised games like Fallen Earth do not have Pepsi or Coke billboards littering the wastelands... this can help subsidize the costs through ads, but be period correct... They probably fear the QQ storm, and a game like that can't afford a loss...
im sorry. is this 1995 when i had my 14400 modem and Internet was $$$,
the 15$ charge was said to cover net expense back in the day, today its nothing so why are keep paying for that? you can make ebough cash just by box +cs or cs alone. or 10$ sub+box like GA. the 15$ sub+box+expansions+cs is just dumb. i will never put so much cash into a game, let alone an old game like that. and no the current model will not stay for long imo. look at GA, AOC with the discount sub ofr 6 month, GW2 with NO SUB, should i go on?
just look at cryptic, this half baked company decide that STO and CO are AAA mmorpg, by what manner? i can say that imo none fo those two is even a 1 A mmorpg. most F2p that ive played have more staff/content then the both combine, so what does make that a AAA mmorpg? a smoked out of his ass bill roper? Atari that think that you can just label something as you want and charge as you want?
SOE, atari/cryptic and those alike will close there gates sooner or later, they fail to understand the market. they fail to comprehend that the game they are selling are not worth the cash they are trying to squeeze out of us.

Thanks Blizzard for showing the world that big price virtual items in a subscription based game are viable and people are willing to spend the $25+ for them...
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

He is talking about the cost involved in making MMORPGS. Its a lot more expensive to make MMOS now compared to olden times. Sorry dude but whole post went woooooooshhhhh!! over your head.

Thank you Shastra, as you clearly got the message that I was trying to convey and while my post was deleted by managment, I guess because I was rather harsh despite all the KILL SOE posts that preceeded mine...
Bottom line is it is inevitable that the industry will change to meet costs whether we agree with the changes or not... it is the nature of the business in any field, unless you are doing that much more respectve volume in sales and subs to make up for the increase in development costs it is only natural that prices and "new" ways of making money will come to light...
I have only ever used station cash for buying tradeskill vitality replenishment potions and bonus exp potions before SF came out, and a couple run speed potions (love those things you can cast on the run and stacks with some other run speed buffs like Earring of the Solstice buff).
I can't afford it now. I see no problem with this service existing in game. If you don't like it, it doesn't affect your game.

I find the entire argument of dev costs rising and all that ridiculous in this case. Are we talking about a new, in development game, currently costing the company millions and millions to get up and running, and them adding higher sub prices or a cash shop to offset their cost of development? No.
We're talking about a several year old game that has little to no development costs compared to games being developed right now (sure they have expansions, but expansion costs are nowhere near what it costs to develop the original game itself). If a new game comes out, such as SWTOR, and they announce that hey at release we're charging X amount for a sub and/or we will also have a cash shop with $25 mounts and the like, that would be more understandable, especially considering their development costs.
Doing such a thing in a game like EQ2 or WoW, especially at that price, is nothing more than a blatant cash grab trying to get more money out of its fanbase, not to "cover development costs". I dont get how the argument of them needing to cover development costs even enters your mind when referring to an already long developed game. As I mentioned above, expansions are a different story as far as dev costs, which get covered by the sales of the expansion anyway, its not as if theyre giving away the expansion for free. Btw, what did the last expansion even cost anyway, wasnt it like an extra $20? You argue their costs are rising... yet they sell a mount which took almost no development whatsoever, and charge mor efor that than their full expansion. Explain the logic behind that.
Honestly, WoW did it, all the free 2 play mmos sell mounts. SOE does it and you guys get all asshurt? Look Sony has boned me multiple times from SWG and the Jedi issue. I think that is quite well said.
First off, the mount is not such a special thing that you can not just NOT buy it. I mean, you get so many mounts easily in EQ2. It's not like you are forced to buy it. And then, SOE is only one of many who do that these days. It's really nothing special Sony at all. You can vent against MMO companies generally, but venting against SOE because it does what everyone else does is just silly.

so lets see, beside the fact as kaiser stated this is an old game, a game today cost lets say 60 mil, wow was 100 and cheap one will be anywhere from 20 t0 40. gw sold more then 6 mil box, thats 300 mill if we do 50$ a pop. so whats there beside greed? as i said you can take gw as a good example how can you make a GOoD f game and not to charge 15$ sub and CS over there is just flop or extra slot. but for pepole sitting in SOE its just about how to get more cash out of you and not even to work hard on that(25$ for 4 pix and the idea itself was copy paste). this show to me and more poeple like me that SOE,crytic and alike are just think of us as cash cows, nothing more, how can they get the most money out of us with the less amount of work.
and i think we all know thats the reak issue here is not the mount, it where mmorpg are going in the near future, just look at cryptic 2 years reskin model production and tell me you want this as your future mmorpg?
just look at most F2p, ther are so many because people think that any 2 cent programer write some code you can launch it and call it an mmorpg.
il say it again: this mostly fail mmorpg world will crumble and die when gw2 will pop out,

Way to go for SOE. Adding cash shop as first P2P publisher, not dropping subscription prices and asking prices for the cash shop items as if the game was F2P.
Good thing I canceled my EQ2 account when SOE gave that 60+TB of data for "social studies".

What slightly bothers me is that SOE sells a mount on the RMT only a few Weeks after WoW did it.
I would have hoped for a bit more imagination (an in-game house instead of a mount for instance...).
Of course they can do it. How much time did it take to develop the mounts? EQ2 has a healthy population right now, probably something like 250,000 these days. if less than half a percent of people (1,000) buy it they just made 25,000 for something that cost them very little to make.
Of course this is why they did it. They saw the amount of people willing to buy a mount from WOW and figure the cost / benefit of this move is profitable, even if a fraction of people that bought the WoW mount will buy their mount.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
cash cash cash.. thats all. sucks.

heh just talked about this in the guild, the mount have worse stats than a 10 min to get mounts in game, at lvl 60 iirc - earlier with some help....but for new players/alts its way better than anything you could get in game. but then again lvl 1-60 takes absolutely no time - but a mount like that maybe would cut off the time with another hour or so. but imo a waste of money, unless you like the looks for those 25$.
Blizz made a boatload of money so why not? "There's a sucker born every minute." :P.T Barnum
well said.
After seeing how well it did for Blizz its not a big suprise. After all it is a buisness and they are in it to make money. You dont have to buy the mount and it doenst give you anything that a normal mount does so good for them.
just cancelled my station pass, hadn't been playing much anyway, this was just the last nail in the coffin for me. but if they got such a hard on to be just like wow let them have at it without my sub.
im sorry. is this 1995 when i had my 14400 modem and Internet was $$$,
the 15$ charge was said to cover net expense back in the day, today its nothing so why are keep paying for that? you can make ebough cash just by box +cs or cs alone. or 10$ sub+box like GA. the 15$ sub+box+expansions+cs is just dumb. i will never put so much cash into a game, let alone an old game like that. and no the current model will not stay for long imo. look at GA, AOC with the discount sub ofr 6 month, GW2 with NO SUB, should i go on?
just look at cryptic, this half baked company decide that STO and CO are AAA mmorpg, by what manner? i can say that imo none fo those two is even a 1 A mmorpg. most F2p that ive played have more staff/content then the both combine, so what does make that a AAA mmorpg? a smoked out of his ass bill roper? Atari that think that you can just label something as you want and charge as you want?
SOE, atari/cryptic and those alike will close there gates sooner or later, they fail to understand the market. they fail to comprehend that the game they are selling are not worth the cash they are trying to squeeze out of us.

Totally didn't see this coming... /sarcasm
Thanks Blizzard for showing the world that big price virtual items in a subscription based game are viable and people are willing to spend the $25+ for them...
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
What are your other Hobbies?
Gaming is Dirt Cheap compared to this...
