I've heard from a source that EverQuest 2 is becoming a non-subscription mmorpg. I was wondering if anyones heard about this, as this would be brilliant. It's supposedly in PC ZONE.

Assume nothing. Why would SOE do such a thing when they have over 200,000 suscribers?

The ONLY way I could see this happening is if they pulled a Funcom and posted in game ads all over the place.

Well if they wanted to get rid of the monthly fee, releasing expansions every few months along with their adventure packs would be the way to go about it. Releasing a decent size adventure pack every 2 or 3 months or even once a month at $10 would almost be a monthly feel but optional.
They could also do what IGE does in a way. Let players pay a certain price to have a certain weapon or armor, not one that you could get off a moster or from a questio but a special one that is only avaliable from SOE at a price. Now they could charge different prices for that. If they wanted to they could do away with the monthly fees and still make money. I doubt we'll ever see that happen.
Though if Guild Wars is a success I think we might see others attempting to do it in a way. Or go in the direction that Funcom has with Anarchy Online with the original game and you paying more with the different expansions. Maybe just allowing a person access to certain lands if they don't pay a extra fee, like no access to the Freeport areas if you pick Qeynos and the other way around and only limited access to the areas they both have access to. Or something along those lines. Wishful thinking and would be nice to see.
