Star Trek Online: State of the Game: Season 2, Season 3 Details!

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Star Trek Online Executive Producer Craig Zinkievich has put out a new State of the Game letter loaded with juicy information on the game's future, as well as an overview of what's been added to the game thus far.

image

A number of the upcoming features mentioned in the letter are already known by most players of the game, at least those who pay attention to dStahl's Engineering Reports, but for the lazy, read below:

  • The Accolade System – I know how much you guys have been wanting this, and I have to admit, I’m pretty stoked about it, too. Track your achievements. How much phaser damage have you dealt in your career? How many Federation officers have you shuffled off this mortal coil (assuming you’re playing a Klingon. No killing your allies, guys!)?

  • The Squad System – This will let you team up with other players who aren’t in your level, and lets your effectiveness match so you can play together.

  • Balance Adjustments – We have those DPS/recharge/global-ability-cooldown adjustments that many of our high-end players have been requesting. Log into Tribble and check them out. Give us your feedback! We’re testing it out now, so this is when we need to hear from you the most. Also – don’t forget to log into Tribble to “play with the devs” early next week. We’ll be there, will you?

  • UI Improvements – We’re working on a window that will show you when rewards happen during normal character advancement (powers, unlocks, bridge officer reqs, etc.).

  • Bug Fixes and Improvements – We’re always working on fixes and improvements, because a game developer’s job is never done.

Not content to simply rehash information fans already know about, Craig goes on to reveal the full details of Season  2, and even some early details on Season 3. Wowza!

Season 2 will include the introduction of mini-games, the Federation Diplomacy Corps (oh yes, diplomacy!), new "faction-agnostic" episode content, as well as a few Klingon exclusive episodes for you Klingon lovers out there, ship interiors (yes!), a raise in the level cap (6 levels) to Vice Admiral I, Fleet Logos, high end content, a new weekly episode schedule, and more. Season 2 is set to go live by the end of July.

If that's not enough, Craig also shared details on Season 3 with us, mentioning that we'd be seeing the addition of a new as-of-yet undetermined faction (Borg? Cardassian? Romulan? Let them know!), user generated content, a persistent PvP sector, Fleet Starbases, the ability to call your Bridge Officers out to fly alongside you, and tons more.

Read the full State of the Game letter for all the juicy details!

I come from a fleet (Klingon) that had had 472 members. Wanna know how many still play STO? ...3!!!!!!! No Kidding!! With all the bullshit and lies from Cryptic ( It will be a two faction game) to name one of many, why should any of us care?

I personally dont care how many shitty games you guys put out, but to absolutely screw up this beloved IP, and for some reason, get away with it ?!!!.... You will forever be known as Craptic.

BOK only has 3 playing now?  Geez.... I know of the instance where an entire fleet left STO that had a lot of members.. but I wasnt aware that BOK dwindled down to that.  Its a sad thing.

That's the exception not the rule. I know of ENORMOUS fleets (especially those from EU) that have 1500+ and are growing.

I run one of the top two PvP teams in the US and we have almost all our membership active from the start and have closed recruitment for now.

It's a decent game and a lot of fun. Certainly there are things they could have done better but it's improving month by month.

    What are you smoking?

Actaully doing an MMO of star trek was always going to be difficult that is why Perpetual pulled out of it and Craptic decided to port another crappy MMOs game engine in.

Still it has made them vast amounts of money so from a business point of view it worked. But please do not say that the game is great in way shape or form, to do that would be lie.

Can I call it a ironic that some of the features coming to STO are/have been coming from Champions Online. I really hope the Champions Online devs don't work on these features only to have the STO staff reskin and what not and call it content/features.

Truthfully I'd think what you are saying is the exception and not the rule and there is lot's to back that up too like the earliest welcome back weekend in the history of mmo's, the article splattered at the top of the mmorpg STO page here (addressing some complaints) which if you read the comments following that wasn't too well recieved either, and lastly take a look at the forums which are more often than not full of frustrated players over the population dwindling in huge numbers.  Again I'm not here to tell you what your own personal experience with the game is just am fairly certain atleast here in the west your assessment of the state of the games population is wrong.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

    First:

as a non-posting member here, I'm going to have to appologize for not sounding off more often.

    Second:

I really have to take issue with the lack of spell-check around these forums. (silly I know, but lack of punctuation can really take the intended context out of some comments).

    Third:

     @ Saorlan:

An MMO of Star Trek would obviously be difficult if one intended to use the IP for cash first and long-term user's second...the nature of the property indicates that Star Trek was always about community playability. Without a Kirk/Spock/McCoy (insert Picard/Ryker/Troi or Janeway/Tuvok/Chakotay commbinations from any sreies you like) immersion within an MMO of Star Trek's calibre wouldn't work without multi-player team play. THAT is the number one reason why Cryptic's (note: I didn't put "Craptic") attempt has been a slow drive off a long pier in this game.

A point of view toward making "vast amounts of money" is always going to be a companys bottom line, But Perpetual didn't "pull out of it" because it was difficult to make the game.

    @ Christopher8:

Call it ironic if you wish, but STO is using Cryptics same engine to run the game as CO, so the same features are naturally going to re-accur. It would be the same features on the same engine as if Cryptic had made CoD or WoW! Or even a F2P game like Evony. Let's not confuse game engines with game mechanics please.

    @ jaxsundane:

I am surprised you could put two whole paragraphs into two sentences...but if I read it correctly, why would frustrated player's be over the population dwindling in huge numbers? Would not the frustrated be equal to the dwindling numbers?

And secondly, Here in the West is a fairly broad statement. I'm west-central. Does that include me?

huh, i thought u were making fun of how repetitive sto is.

IF THE ONLY DEFENCE FOR CRITICISM OF A GAME IS CALLING SOMEONE A TROLL OR HATER, THAT SAYS A LOT ABOUT THE QUALITY OF THE GAME

This game tried to nickel & dime its fans by enticing them to purchase playable Borg, Klingon, and more.

A game that treats their customers as such doesn't belong in the MMO genre. I doubt we will see much more of STO in the year.

Come on MMORPG.com you guys are journalists.  Get someone over to Cryptic and do a whole piece about them.  Show us the faces and minds behind this IP raping soulless money grubbing company, and how they continue to pump out IP's and profit from box sales and lies.

Comparing them to the common alien cliche of ravaging a planet of all life before moving on.  Cryptic is like a Tyranid swarm ravaging IP's and milking those existing fans before moving on to the next, etc.

You wouldn't be damaging the company.  Anyone who reads it would already know what a joke Cryptic is.  It would mostly be a 'HAHA WE GOT YOU SUCKAS' from Cryptic as they moved on to a new IP.

I have a lifetime press pass to play the game for free, yet I won't even bother. None of these upcoming features are remotely exciting enough to make me go through the trouble of logging in again either.

We learned from history that there is no such thing like a "2nd chance for an MMO".
So you better have all the features on board, the moment you go live with a game.

Things missing at launch will drive players from the game, not coming back later.
Game studios not facing this very fact will fail - deserved.

I dont care how many articles cryptic pay you to run, I for one will not give them a single penny of my cash.

I love how this article runs the same weekend as "The customer is not always right" and the same week as the "5 things a player should remember" seems a couple of MMOrpg.com editors have made it their mission to justify cryptic.  Well newsflash you cant justify them, I hope they rot and that their next investment crashes and burns from the start.

Its time for the customer to show he has a say.

I cancelled my subscription because when I finished my mission I never got any money after that and you can't do any ground battles just space battles.

    All sounds good to me.

In regards to these huge fleets that are dwindling, are they the same kind of guilds/alliances that randomly invite new players as soon as they are seen without a guild name floating above their heads? because thats usually what happens to those sorts of communities, nothing to tie them together other than a guild tag and they soon dwindle to nothing because of it.

Funny how his State of the Game letter failed to mention "oh hey, we're nerfing the only marginally fun part of the game: space combat!"

This game is horrid. But I guess I "just don't get it."

Seriously, if there really are any 1500 member fleets in STO get just one of them to have at least half  of their members post here on MMORPG.com.

Till I see that happen, I'll remain skeptical of your figures.

Nah, BoK is a gaming community now, most of the core guys are playing EvE, while we wait for ER.  3 is just the number of people left playing STO.

(Quite a few mistakes in your 1st sentence.  You should capitalize "As."  You misspelled apologize and you should remove "I'm going to" and replace it with "I have to apologize."  "I'm going to have to" sounds awkward.

Again your 1st sentence is very awkward.  Maybe saying "I have an issue" instead of "I really have to take issue."  I don't think you can physically take an issue unless you "really have to take a poop."

Sorry, I just got really confused at what the hell you were trying to say with all the grammatical errors.  Even with them being corrected, I still don't understand what you are trying to say.
