Help me find a game please.

Hello there. Another MMO vet tired of the same old deal. My gf and I are raiding in WoW again because it's the only thing that keeps coming out with new group challenges. That's what we enjoy, grouping up and overcoming something that only a group could take out.

What I like from WoW is the 10 mans. I like how tightly knit your group becomes. 25 mans is where the game starts to lose me.

I wish a game like CoX had the end-game of WoW. I found CoX to be one of the most exciting games ever when I first played it. The combat was great, the customization was great. The animations were awesome, and the grouping was excellent. I loved how the more people you had in your party, the more masses of minions you were up against.

I understand all games aren't meant to be like WoW where you practically work to get maxed out to actually begin the game, but there needs to be challenges to be had with your friends at max level.

The sad part about that game is you do all this to level up, get excited about really going to work with upgrades for your character until you realize there's really nothing to challenge yourself with all your new action. The combat in that game is just flat out fun though.

What I can't stand are grindfests. My gf more so than me hates grinding. If we aren't questing or doing some kind of objective-based killing, she loses all interest. She's very goal/achievement oriented. I'm more action/challenging oriented.

I guess it's worth listing the games I've played and most likely wouldn't consider playing again unless there was something major I missed.

WoW, EQ2, CoX (would love it if there was something to do at 50), Vanguard, AoC, DDO, Anarchy Online (considered this for a min), Aion, Requiem, WaR, Battle of the Immortals, LotrO, Guild Wars

I heard Final Fantasy is great for grouping, but the graphics and combat system do very little to please the misses.

I saw a video on the new StarWars where a dev guy said that they had a different idea on what a heroic encounter would be. Most games have a bunch of people beating on one big monster. Saying that it's better to have massive amounts of monsters accounting for almost impossible odds. This is what I liked about CoX. That Diablo2 mentality where if you have a bigger group you should be able to handle more hordes of enemies.

Am I right to assume this doesn't really exist in a f2p?

Out of the F2P's I've looked at that LoCo game someone just posted. It seems interesting as I currently play LoL at the moment (without the GF who hates it). I've been looking at Pristontale 2. Does anyone have any word on that? RoM seems too WoW-like. Cabal Online looks semi-interesting. I hear people always say good things about Ryzom. Also heard well about Darkfall, but we won't do first person games.

My gf is REALLY anti-f2p games. So if I present something, it has to be fun lol. Ultimately I don't expect a whole lot. If there's something to fill in the gaps between raid resets, that's great, if it replaces WoW altogether, all the better.

I've rambled quite a bit. Thanks a lot in advance for any help/advice!

They're all pretty much WoW clones when it comes to f2p.

If you want just some little fun without longer commitment, try out Lineage 2 on a private server or something.

But if you want something to replace WoW, look for p2p.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

I have been down the same track as you when it comes to games. Currently I am just playing random F2P games and waiting for Guild Wars 2 to hit the shelves. If you dont like the combat system in FFXI then chances are you are going to be in the same boat when the new one comes out. They use a very slow almost turn base combat system but thats to be expected when your creating a game for both PC and Console gamers. I honestly think StarWars is going to either tank or fall very short of the game they are boasting.

GW2 seems like the only game that is going to fill the same genre that all the burnt out WoW players are looking for along with bring back the mechanics that old EQ players miss. I always loved everything that GW1 did with there game except the level of instancing. GW2 is going to do away with that and give you the open world feel. Seamless world, cutting edge art design, dynamic combat system, and dynamic quest system all wrapped up in a fantasy world. The only problem I can see is that ArenaNet is going to fall short as well and not be able to deliver the game they are promising. With ArenaNet's track record I think they will however get damn close.

Either way your probly looking at 3 months to a year before you see a AAA MMO hit the market that will come even close to filling the gap that you seem to be looking for.

Edit BTW what game are you referring to in CoX?

Sounds like you have played all of the games that I have. Me and my GF play Darkfall. I try to get her to play Guildwars with me once in awhile but she would rather harvest/craft/conquer a village by herself than to play a different game at all. At first she did not want to play it at all and had a hard time getting used to the first person mode but after playing a bit she found that PVE is needed very often and there are always many different things to do besides PVP so its perfect for us (she hates PVP unless its easy PVP).

I am very excited for Guildwars 2!!! I know I will continue to play Darkfall and don't think that I can pry my GF off of Darkfall but I will definitely be playing GW2 on the side.

lol my gf hated GW cause we hit the lvl cap too fast. Darkfall I hven't even considered because neither of us really like first person games. The closest we'll get to that is a third person shooter like Global Agenda.

I've actually gotten really interested in trying out APB. I've gotten one person to say they will send me a beta key, but as you could imagine I need a second or I can expect to sleep in the dog house!

If anyone has a spare key, or an account they don't really need, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks.

If you're looking for group content, and don't mind the dated graphics, you could give the original EQ a shot.  I only mention EQ because you had thought about AO which has graphics on par with EQ. The game invented the Raid, and has plenty of that sort of content. However you won't find the combat to be as fast as CoX, at least not at first.  It can also be a very challenging game, moreso than most MMOs on the market.
