I was actually thinking of coming back to EQ2 but I didn't know if the game will last much longer with EQ3 announced. So anyone have any advice to whether or not it's worth coming back right now?
Everquest Next was only announced maybe 6 months ago and they were then hiring devs. Its going to be a LONG time yet.

Eh? EQ1 is still alive and EQ2 is double the amount of content of EQ1, i highly doubt EQ3 will be the cause of EQ2 shutting down. Only way it will die is when SOE pulls the plug.
Yeah but is the population squandering? I mean I know AB and that other server still have people, but is it enough to keep the game going?
EQ2 population has been steady 200K+ for long time now. it has its loyal fanbase like EQ1. I know players who are subscribed to both EQ2 and EQ1 for 3 to 4 years. EQ3 will attract new players ofcourse but doesn't mean EQ2 will die because of that.I am a true EQ fan and i will most probably sub to both EQ2 and EQ3. I am quite positive that i am not alone.
I was watching a google video on Everquest 3 and the guy said there slowly working on it besides it will be for the PS3. There working on EQ2 atm more. Slowly more people will get back to EQ2 but it won't die. Have faith my friend. He's talking about making an Everquest series.
no one knows the actual numbers for any MMO. it is just speculation. Only the administrators who work for the game companys and handle the servers would know that.
I just started 2 days ago with my wife and 7 rl friends. I havent played since jan 06 so we all started over. So far the low level areas are very populated. We are all on the Crushbone server and it seems to be very active. The game is awesome so far.
I've been playing for 5 years now on EU Runnyeye server, there are always players around regardless of the zone level, channels are busy and grouping is feasible (and this for me shows it's a healthy server). Of course if you compare to WoW it will never be that packed and I'm pretty glad it isn't.
In addition, I'd recommend you join a guild as it's always an asset when starting a new game. There are plenty of family-friendly guilds who are willing to help newcomers (and no need to post application forms worse than if you would be applying for a new job @ the CIA) and provide advice & access to a guild hall.

Okay cool. I'll probably resub then eventually. I just had to make sure before I did.
