Open PvP MMORPG?

What are some good MMO's similar to the PVP as in Tibia (Old game but fun) where it is open PVP (You can attack any player anywhere, anytime) with a death penalty high enough to make it so you want to avoid death at all costs. On Tibia this brings realistic wars where high level guilds battle each other for power over their whole server. Also there is no max level on Tibia but a max level wouldn't hurt. Maybe even player looting?

I want to find a game where when you are PVPing with a player there is something to lose and you don't just respawn to start fighting again

        Real life?

Stages of a new mmo: 1) It's just beta. It still has plenty of time before release. 2) It just launched. Give it time. WoW wasn't built in a day. 3) We don't need you anyway. 4) F2P announced. 5)Huge influx of players. 6) Look how much has changed. 7) Cash shop is the only thing developed lately. 8) It has been a long journey and we thank everyone who was part of it. Shutting down in 3 months. (Courtesy of Robokapp.)

EVE fits your description, as does Darkfall. I've been playing EVE for nearly 4 years, and I still get a little tingle of excitement when I see a hostile on my overview. But I also remember the -literally - heart-pounding rush of the first time I jumped out of hi-sec space (and got immediately murdered because I didn't know what the hell I was doing, but hey, serves me right for autopiloting). The gameplay is very different from other MMORPGs though, and a lot of people can't get past that. PM me if you want a 21-day free trial.

No, no, as others have said both EVE and Darkfall offer this.

I keep seeing this "real life" response to so many things on this site. Bear in mind folks, this site concerns MMO video games and not the true reality of life on Earth.

This genre allows us to escape RL, and I think that's why a lot of us are here. So if you want to do something daring in real life or you feel the need to prove how "hardcore" you are over the PVP crowd by joining the army, please be my guest. Just don't ask and expect me to, because that's not why I'm here.

"Mr. Rothstein, your people never will understand... the way it works out here. You're all just our guests. But you act like you're at home. Let me tell you something, partner. You ain't home. But that's where we're gonna send you if it harelips the governor." - Pat Webb

How has no one said Age of Conan?

Try out Age of Conan, Cimmeria server. Every zone you can gank/kill minus people running instances for gear. Has a murderer system too.

    Meets all your requirements.

    -open PVP anywhere

-looting (you can also vandalize and destroy their towns/houses if you wish)

    -no stat cap

-death penalty is you have to remake your character. You will inherit a minimum of 25% of the experience and stats of your previous character as long as you set them as your ancestor.

    -its 2D like Tibia

It used to be that games like what you are describing were few and far between. Now there are tons of them. You won't have trouble finding one. Lots of so-called F2P games are open PvP.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

I think this would be the opposite of what he wants.  He wants death to mean something.  A guy should not be able to 'gank' you without feeling like he might lose something. . or else he can just do it all he wants . . I think a game like the OP wants would not have so much "ganking".

I will vouch for AoC's PvP in the sense that it's fluid enough to go all night. Sure, it really sucks trying to level with PvE while people keep attacking you with zero setbacks for death, but at some point it really helps to PvP for long periods of time without a break for any setbacks.

I think that is a great point.  If you want that type of game AOC might be great.    I could see the way up being frustrating though.  I will have to give it a shot.

For the OP, some short summaries.

Darkfall - open world, PvP in most areas, you can 'go red' or try to stay blue by not killing your own faction or non-opposing guilds. Full loot is the death penalty. Still tons of 'ganking' as it is very time consuming to max your character out so vets can just clean up on noobs if they so desire.

EVE - You can attack anyone anywhere, but there are police that come, though like my neighborhood, too late, in some solar systems. 'low sec' space is free for all except that guilds 'corporations' control and patrol some.

AoC - has PvP servers, there is a murderer flag, but even more than DF expect to be attacked all the time. Like DF, run in packs, But like the above poster says, there really isnt a significant death penalty.

All awesome games in their own ways.

"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga

What he said but replace SB with Darkfall!

    : D

I think that you will get a bigger rush from Darkfall than EVE because of the controls/graphics are done in an elder scrolls sort of way so everything looks more realistic as if you are actually there. EVE is more like you are watching a spaceship float around on a chart. I didnt like the FPS view in Darkfall at first but you can angle the camera to see yourself when resting, riding a mount, or you can switch to 3rd person by pulling out a melee weapon. I really like the controls and how the game mechanics feel (which is funny because I almost left the game because of what I like now . .. just hard to get used to at first). Mortal Online looks really cool but the gameplay is not very fun at all . .. I would like it more if Darkfall wasn't so much better as it has a very realistic feel as well which is what I prefer. I like to put on headphones and pretend that I am in the game . .. which cannot be done as well with stupid cartoony graphics or floating names, numbers, circles around mobs, etc.

Not sure why anyone would suggest AoC as you never lose anything when you die so you will not get much of a rush. It is funny when you solo a group who is trying to quest by cutting off heads and stuff . .. lol WHILE NAKED! : P     world is far from open as there are invisible walls everywhere and instances . .. and the PVP is imbalanced and kinda dumb . ..

Darkfall is the best example of a game like this.  Just don't expect to actually be able to kill anyone until the weather turns cold.
