Those who played WoW in the first 6 months or so of release will remember the almost endless world PvP battles, Ashenvale vs. Xroads and Terran mill vs. southshore. Hundreds clashing just for the fun of it, good times.
When Cataclsym hits a large percentage of the current base will reroll to see the new 1-60 stuff & new races as well as many old players returning.
Remember you don't need to buy the expansion to see the new 1-60.

I think this would be the PERFECT time for Blizzard to implement a "chicken" mechanic like Warhammer has where if you attack another player more then 9 levels below your level you are turned into a chicken and can only peck for 1 damage and have 1 HP.
If they did this, I'd roll on a PvP server and enjoy the massive massive world PvP that would exist with all the new re-rolls and level ups and new race's toons.
It's sad but I honestly don't think we're going to see that, people will be going into BGs from anywhere for PvP as usual, and the community nowadays seems far more concerned with grinding to max level asap and then coveting loot than actually going for a bit of good ol' fashioned (and rewardless!! :O) fun killing other players. I'd love to see it, I'm still torn on whether to come back for cataclysm or not just because I think the game has got more dire with WotLK since it's basically Lobby of Warcraft and most people are unsocialable ass-clowns.
If it somehow did happen though, I'd be there

World PvP is dead.
R.I.P.
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
It died with flying mounts.
"World PvP" in WoW is only an excuse for people to act like asses and impose their selfish little selves on others. Why can't you people stay on the PvP-designated servers and let other people play the way they want? That way, all 10 of you can kill the Flight Masters and Quest Givers all you want, even if you do run out of lowbies to steamroll.

unfortunately this random BG/dungoen button has completely removed any need of any world travel. everyone just sitts in a neutral city and ques up for randoms.
this is how it will go:
in the first month there will be many people running arround trying to race to level 85. nobody is gonna care about world pvp. they will all be trying to get to 85 asap and discover every new dungoen aveilable. sure there will be the random guy ganking but most will be too busy racing to 85 to care much.
i give it 2 months and most will have reached 85 and discovered most of the revamped old world and they will be sitting in the new(esh) neutral city queing up for randoms. then everyone will be back to farming badges with the random button.
This.
This.
The picture gets even uglier when you consider flying mounts in Azeroth. Blizzard is advertising 'experience the new Azeroth!' but failing to point out one key wrench that will get in the gears of EVERY REROLL that tries to do just that:
High level 80-85 flying around the 'new Azeroth' on their mount: they see Lowbie_7821 running to a quest objective in Tanaris: they drop off their mount and insta-gib them. They mount up, continue on their merry way.
Everyone who can weigh in meaningfully on this topic has experienced Hellfire at BC release or shortly thereafter and knows the exact senario that will play out.
Not only did flying mounts kill world pvp, but they gave an EDGE to the higher level player to pick when and where the little world pvp that exists will happen. Additionally, the 'not quite so high level players' who are able to mount up, just mount to avoid conflict. Rather than be *part of* the battle to equalize, instead there is futher of a divide between attacker and attackee.
Edit: Hellfire, not Nagrand- damn am I getting senile already?
That is exactly right, and we're not saying NO to save WoW, because it is already a lost cause. We are saying NO to dissuade the next group of greedy suits who decide to emulate Blizzard and Cryptic, etc.
We can prevent some of the future games from spewing this crap, but the sooner we start saying no, the better the results will be.
So - Stand up, pull up your pants, and walk away.

World PVP died when the first battlegrounds were patched into the game... LONG before flying mounts..
It'd be nice if Cataclysm brings it back, even if only briefly.

Sounds realistic to me.
what would be amazingly cool is if the new expansion would transform all the old world capital cities into something like Wintergrasp were every so often there is a window of opportunity for a siege. Now that would be fantastic! of course it would need to reward siegers with more marks but just think about it........sieging Ironforge, Darnasus, Ogrimar, Undercity....and who knows......maybe being able to holde a hostile city captive if the siege is sucesfull. now that would bring back some rasemblence of Vanilla world pvp and would definately go a long way to getting many players back me included.
I sign to the above

I get the feeling this would just cause even more faction imbalance as all the alli on realms such as BDF and Cho'Gall either quit, transfered, or faction transferred en masse. Same for the realms where horde never wins WG due to faction imbalance.
what 'new' neutral city? there will be no reason to go to Shatt or Dal at this point and I was led to believe than in Cata the old world capitols would fill up again.
hence the reason to give the gnomes and trolls their own cities finally.
Blizzard wont do this, simply because they have too many players to take a risk at pissing any real number of them off.
every 1% of subscribers lost to them is 1 million pounds in income every month gone.... when you look at the numbers that way, its staggering that they make any changes at all.
What Blizzards needs to do is to improve the existing BGs. Perhaps adding more landscape to Arathi Basin and Warsong Gulch with new mechanics. Alterac Valley is a disaster. I like that BG but what most players are doing is rushing to the enemy's stronghold and kill the leader. Pretty much AV is a fast zerg for the honor grind.
And about world PvP in Azeroth and Kalimdor, it is possible to see some action since many people will re-roll to try the new races, however, since you will be able to fly in the old world, pretty much world PvP will become again a low level gank fest.
PvP in CATA will take another turn: the rated BG competition.
Better than Arena's and based on Guilds play. It will be the mainstay of WOW's PvP in future years.
Going from this to more world PvP is only a small step if they tune further the successor of the Wintergrasp zone.
By tuning I mean including more world PvP quests.
On PvP servers - with all the new "close" leveling zones - there will be enough friction in bordering leveling zones to allow skirmishes.
CATA is a bridge to new competitive PvP play that the old WOW simply didn't have at launch.
