So in my disappointment  with every other MMO out there right now I finally decided to try out the Eve trial.

I don't know why I avoided this for so long. I guess I sorta thought it was a browser/text game when I saw it many moons ago.

The graphics are nice and the gameplay is alright (still exploring this). I love that it's not another spam mash-button fest where you're using every move as it comes off cooldown.

I have a few questions though if anyone can help me out.

The first and foremost important thing - the UI font. Holy jesus I'm going to make myself blind with how small the font is. I've reduced my res to simply be able to read and I'm giving myself eye-strain and headaches trying to read the mission logs sometimes.

Second, what role should I try to fill? I started out as a Caldari Civice. I don't particularly like the ship styles though. I hate it when they are not symetrical lol.

What kind of role should I try to fill (that isn't mining/harvesting) that allows me to get into the action with corps and such? I had thought about being a scout-type.

I usually end up playing games with my gf. She saw me playing it a little last night. How can I get her interested in this? Doesn't seem like it has a whole lot of appeal for a female. She was macking comments about beeming up scotty lol.

What would we do together to progress/have fun?

Thanks a lot in advance. The game is definitely different which I've been looking for years now, but there's still more to be had before I can make a decision. I'm sure a lot don't, but I loved the feeling of being overwhelmed. I havne't felt that since I first played an MMO in anarchy online, or when I tried out WoW.

First in EVE the best part is finding your own path there is no set "role to fill" you can mine endlessly, do pve or even pvp.

Second The UI is fully custumizable fonts window sizes colors transparency stacking windows you name it... explore the esc menu and find whats best for you (took me maybe 4 months to really get a good setup that I tweek to this day)

Third the GF thing: I'd show her the stories of people stealing BIllions from other players after months or years of planning the human element may appeal to her. also maybe show her the ship chart and explain the insane scale of the game in terms of grand scope... other than that I agree there isn't much for gals in EVE. they are few and far between to the point where there are girl only corporations with insane membership requirements.

    hope this helps ^^

    WTF podded again?

If you can read these forums, you should have no issue reading ingame text. I think they are the same font size - 10pt. You can increase the font size to 12pt in ESC menu.

Screen resolution has no bearing on font size.

Any race can fly any ship and use any technology. Skill up ships you fancy.

Your skill focus depends on what you want to do.

You do not really progress since there is no fixed goal to follow. Just do what you enjoy.

I'm a fairly new player myself - just giving you a few pointers, you might want to look into joining a corp together.

The fun is yours to make :)

I agree it's very overwhelming - but that's all part of the fun!

Here's a fantastic post made by a fairly new player on the EVE new player forums. It'll give you some idea of the game I think.

I am no longer “new” at this game.  I started early last year, took a 3 month hiatus, and restarted this year.  I have learned many things along the way, and some things that new pilots can learn from.  Some are experiences, others simply observations, and some are downright obvious.  But having played in PvE and PvP (and being horrible at the latter), I have made some costly mistakes.  I have had to commit suicide in wormhole space with my implants.  I have flown a battleship into battle and lost, and was waving my fist at 2 virtual frigates on a screen.  In no particular order, here are some things I have learned.

    You will die.

    A lot.

And once you get good at things and understand how the game works, you will end up getting wtfbbqpwnzored by 2 people in frigates, and your battleship will be burning with you inside.  They will demand you hand over more isk than you have in your virtual wallet, and you will realize that, in fact, you still know nothing about this game.

You will never win this game.

This isn’t a “win” game.  There is no level 80.  There is no set of achievements except the ones your set for yourself.

You aren’t safe.  Anywhere.  Period.  PvP occurs in stations too.  It is called The Market.  You might not die, but your wallet could easily disappear.

You fit your ship wrong.  Again.  That’s right, you always will.  “My Punisher killed that Rifter!  This is certainly the right fit.  No wait, how did that Coercer kill me?  I need to refit…”

    Check your directional.

    Check your local.

    That Maller is a trap.

Warp stabilizers might save you today.  They won’t tomorrow, and probably won’t ever again.

Inject your skillbook before you leave the station.  Neo didn’t learn Kung-Fu by having it sit in his usb drive.

Bookmark everything.  ESPECIALLY when you jump into a wormhole.  This includes where you came into the wormhole.  Because when you are busy scanning and a HAC targets your Arbitrator, you will be in a pod.  And then you will have a really interesting time getting out of WH space.

Keyboards are destructible.  Much more so when used as a projectile.

Don’t fly it if you can’t fit it.  That being said, DON’T FLY IT IF YOU CAN’T FIT IT.  And the same goes for affordability.

That mentally challenged fellow there in local chat calling you names?  He’s not mentally challenged.  Nor is he forgiving when he finds you.

    Pods pop easily.

Concord delivers swift justice, especially for your mistakes, like targeting friendly pods and clicking the wrong action.

You can do anything:  Manufacture, explore, trade, pvp, mine, lead a corporation, lead an alliance, wage wars, pirate, transport, be a part of factional warfare, and I’m sure there is more I am leaving out. You can become virtually rich, and you can lose it all.

A friend of mine that I used to play WoW with asked what is so great about Eve, and why he should leave WoW.  It is such a broad and easy question, I didn’t know where to start.  But ultimately I told him the most important thing I have learned in this game:

Eve is what you make of it.

Well what sort of things do appeal to your "female"? There are an astonishing number of ways to play EVE, most of them not initially obvious. You can point out that it is an extremely social game by nature - your relationship with other players will ddefine your game to a great extent. But EVE often involves a level of ruthlessness that many women might be unwilling to admit that they enjoy as much as everyone else.

No one knows for sure what it is about EVE that really is unattractive to females.  Its been suggested lack of avatars, the space theme which is too geeky for them, (but Elves are romantic or something) or the unfriendly learning curve, I dunno.

I'm sure that if you figure out a way to make EVE interesting to more females CCP will make you a member of their board of directors.

I am female and I play EvE.  Yes I know I am a rare breed.  LOL!   I get enjoyment from the challenge of survival in that vastness of space where death can come at any moment - anywhere.   I do not do much PvP(I can hold my own - sometimes) for I like exploring, scavenging, mining and playing with the markets.   I just enjoy the micro-management of trying to accumulate as much ISk as is humanly possible.   ^_^

At the risk of being blacklisted by every female MMO player on these forums.. I'll jump on out and say what I've observed... Females, in general, are more attracted to the Fantasy genre than any other for MMO's.

A lack of an avatar is even more of a hindrance IMO for EVE.  Every single female player I have played with, at some point, without fail, will show up somewhere, in completely casual gear.. dress etc.. whatever is available.. Remove that ability, and you might as well put a "Men Only" sticker on the box.

Yeah there ARE exceptions to the rule, but they are that, exceptions.  If you are female and don't agree with me, then you fall under the exception category (and we <3 you for it).

That's why I'm looking forward to WiS... If my wife can have a place in EVE where she can put on some cute flirtsy dress and flash her polygonal tata's, then the fact that all the meat of the game (as we would play it) takes place in a ship with your enemy locked.. well, she just might overlook that.

Caldari ships tend to shine in gangs rather than solo. Generally Caldari ships do one thing and do it really well, and are terrible at everything else. If you can find a good, well run corp with a fleet commander who knows what he's doing, then your caldari ships will be valuable when your corp fights.

There are a few exceptions, but not amongst the starting lineup. The first really solo-friendly Caldari ship is the Drake, which is a battlecruiser. Compare to the Minmatar who get the Rifter frigate, then the Rupture cruiser, both of which a fantastic PVP ships.

In fact thinking about it, I would direct new players to Minmatar. Caldari ships better suit the gameplay of advanced, experienced players.

I specialized in Caldari frigates (Harpy and soon enogh Hookbill) but being a casual player with a limited time to play I never joind a corp. I reside in Empire but I was planning to get involved in PvP in low-sec from time to time solo against pirates. I hope I didn't invest past 2 months training for a group type of ships.

think about it though .... females would be great at infilitrating corps and stealing stuff since there seems to be a pattern with giving women things in games (SWG comes to mind). Every corp would be broke and women would control the isk flow, it wouldnt be pretty.

Merlin - excellent frig, solo more than capable
Harpy - Merlin with T2 resists

I don't know much about Hookbill.

If you want to PVP, you might consider joining Factional Warfare or Red vs Blue. Not that it is impossible to roam low sec in a frig but your target choice will be limited. I would still advice you to try it out though, just get ready to get more into a passive role - bait and let them catch you instead of chasing them.

What part do you have on mind?

The great majority of pirates roll in gangs. A single AF of any race wont do much. If you want solo frigate action, I'd point you to the Manticore, which has the slots and fittings to do the solo thing, and a cloak so you can choose your fights.

You could solo in anything but to be completely honest you may have a better time just enlisting in Faction warfare. YOu dont even have to join a corp just enlist and ur tossed in a NPC FW corp. Then you could either band up with other players for low sec pvp or go solo and leanr Eve the hard way.

Or you could join up Red vs Blue and have pvp everywhere at your leisure. When i was super casual I would join the red side on the weekends and just pvp in empire. you could leave anyside at anytime so you can make isk for your loses.

Your third option is to find a pvp corp thats willing to train newbs and doesnt mind you being casual.

I would not suggest staying in a NPC corp since you at least have back up in the other three options.

    OP,
just forget the stealth bomber. They are not capable of doing anything solo outside of 0.0.

    Don't bother.

Stealth bombers were turned into useless and only thing they can do is bombing which is not allowed in low/high sec.

Apart from bomb launchers, they can use oversized battleship weaponry - torpedo launchers.
That means you will do no damage to small targets and if the target is large enough for you to do anything, it has drones that will eat you in long before you can do any harm.

    Really, not worth the skilling.
