PvP Servers - The Devs need to start DISABLING enemy name tags.

depaindepain Member Posts: 263

This only applies on PvP servers. Moreover, it's merely an opinion - don't beat me up too much!

Enemy name tags remove so much from PvP. It completely removes the use of the environment, e.g., laying down in the grass, hiding behind a large rock or tree. The entire system, unless you're a cloaked scout, is void of surprise.

Enemy name tags should only show if you are either within a certain amount of meters from that player or if you click on your opponent. As for targeting, that too should be limited to distance unless one clicks on a very distant opponent.

Can't say they ever bothered me...

But I guess it wouldn't be hard for devs to put a toggle in game options menus to turn them off for people who hate them.

I agree completely. You can't hide in the environment if you have a huge nametag over your head.

I'd love to see more games do away with them unless someone manages to click on them or something.

Yep, with the game engine I work with, players must actually click on another player to have the nametag show. Really, it should be uniform based, just like rl. A number of games do that, but mainly where PvP isn’t an afterthought.

Get rid of name plates entirely.

    Amen.

People talk about zone loading, fast travel breaking immersion..lol...I go to rough neighborhoods for work and I'd love to have a blue, red, grey flagging system. I'd REALLY love to have a disease, bleeding, confused coloration for the name tage for me clients.

I agree, it's pretty annoying trying to hide with a blazing name tag hanging over your head.

  • ComnitusComnitus Member Posts: 2,462

I agree. People complain that "stealth" - vanishing in full daylight, in the plain sight of your enemy - is unrealistic and stupid. Yes, it is. Real stealth - hiding behind a tree or in a bush - is not. Unfortunately, people can't do that when they have a blazing red nametag over their heads.

Please show me a pvp game where they don't already remove floating health bars for a certain distance away. I believe most games you need to be within certain number of yards or  be selected.

Most of the games you listed are primary PvE games. Also most of the games you listed don't show huge flying health bars unless selected or in close range. They show their name but it not like it floating pass trees and huge like health bars.

Not having nametags will only work in certain types of pvp games. BF2 uses nametags on ‘sighting’ where you need to hover the mouse tag over an area to get the name to appear. In a game where certain classes get a distinct advantage by not being seen, always on nametags are a way of levelling the playing field.

Stealth classes are the problem, if you have a class that can remain invisible all the time and their nametag is never seen that can be an issue. Balanced gameplay has to come first.

Not quite. You have to use the "Order"-key (default is Q) to spot targets which will show the bar and location of the target you're aiming to your team members. A thing that is extremely helpful for team members and is shamefully rare to see it used. I think majority of BFBC2 players don't know that there is a feature/key like this.

First thing you do before you even fire your weapon, tag the target so you can fire through obstacles or your friends can finish what you started.

When will we see a real Planetside-like stealth in a decent MMO? :|

Ok, you have a cloak on but, that isn't just completely visible OR completely invisible, if you are standing still, you can be seen only in short range by using some skill/implant (or you can just be "guessed", shooting at random), if you are moving slowly you are slightly visible as a fluctuation (but you'd mostly have to be either very close or actively searching for a cloaker to spot it, you'd probably miss it if you are focused on doing other things, especially sniping -i hate cloakers! >.<-), if you are moving faster or running you are mostly visible as the fluctuation is very accentuated...

I'd really like to see it used more than just "if you are using stealth skill you are not targetable unless revealed"... :/

I did just mean just for you to see the nametage of the opponnent in BF2. Putting a blip on a radar makes a huge differance for any type of pvp game. I am not for or against name tags, blips etc. As long as the designers take into account how that effects pvp, particully for stealth classes, there should not be major issues.

I am somewhat bringing back this old gem of a thread as I agree with it 100%

I would actually consider going back to WARHAMMER AOR if they removed enemy name-tags, so that THEY, the enemy could no longer see my tag.. It adds a whole different dimension to PVP.. I am really disliking games that claim to be all "PVP this, PVP that" but the mechanics make everything so easy, it's just a boring PVP grindfest, there is nothing real, no skill involved, no tactics.. It comes down to whoever has the best items and who can spam their spells and abilities the fastest..

Some people like more realistic combat, others are just looking to play a fun game. If you took name tags off, you'd have to turn friendly fire on too. Some folks would like that, others don't. That's one reason why it's so important that the players have options on what features there are; like dedicated servers for online shooters.

Agree completely, DAOC had it right.  It displayed the race of the enemy, but not name or class.  That's how it should be for PvP games.  It's another reason why I miss DAOC so much and hate that Mythic didn't come out with a DAOC 2.

I doubt it. The vast majority of the MMO community would be the people who play MMOs just for the fun factor of leveling up. I bet is something like 6 or 7 people out of 10 compared to the e-sport raiders and arena players that think they're the reason why MMOs and video games are made and they're made only for them that are more like 3-4 people out of 10.

I would love this, I always hated the fact that the enemy can see you from a mile away because they see a red blob in the distance (this is your name tag).

  • SovrathSovrath Member LegendaryPosts: 32,976

    I agree.

Also, don't show the enemy's health bar.

I agree with this also. To a point.

I'm tired of walking into a city, forest, plain, "whatever" and seeing this visual pollution everywhere.

If one wants to see a name they can mouse over it.

     Stealth is the balance;

This is mainly from a WoW perspective.

    But as a Rogue:

if I attack a priest, Or a warlock, I get feared then they use there attacks on me that slow me down, then just when I get to them they fear me again.

If I attack a hunter, He puts his pet on me and the keeps jumping away from me out of my attack range until I am dead.

If I attack a mage, I get frozen or slowed with the Ice attacks, the mage stays away from me until I am dead.

If I attack a paladin, Just as I think I am going to kill him he bubbles and then heals himself back to full health.

If I attack a druid, He grabs me with the vines and he is able to stay away from me until I am dead.

    Stealth is the Balance,

With stealth I can sneak up to melee range and get the first attack in. If I don't have stealth I am dead with every class except probably a warrior.

Rogues are squishy and they have to be in melee range to be effective. Stealth is what balances that out.
