By tongue in cheek I mean this; remember thoes cheesy hollywood films from the 1950's-60's where all the main actors had American accents, like King Arthur or Lancealot or El-Cid, Prince valient or whoever. And by that rational you could make it a faction free for all. How about throwing in Ninja's or samurai for instance going toe to toe with medevil knights or Vikings. Plus the Mongel Hordes invading from the east. Throw in some Roman Legionaries and a Greek Phalanx or some native American Indian tribes....now thats a game I could get into right there.:)

50s and 60s? I can't count how many Roman era american films I've been to in the 90s and 2000s, expecting the actors to sound like my Italian cousins and in-laws, and they have English accents. wtf? lol.

But ya, One idea would be to make it a revision of history. Have those named people in the back-story or flashbacks and perhaps have it several hundred years later. Imagine the 1800s if The U.S. was 30 or so 'states' with no federal govt, and if the British isles were 4 nations of Wales (AKA Cymru), Cornwall, Londinum, and Scotland (AKA Alba)?

Lmao good point astoria and my bad. Us brits got our accents everywhere as well. Don't want to derail here but there was a programe on British tv around Christmas set when the Romans invaded Britain. All the Romans had accents strate out of the Godfather. Was quiet funny. Back on topic how about the game set in a place that is somehow out of time. Where the greatest warriors in history are put together to fight for something? I.e Alien masters/land and resources/cheese.

Another human who would fit in pretty well is Gráinne Mhaol (say it "grawn-ya wail"), who was an Irish pirate queen in the 16th century.

Gráinne Mhaol literally means "Bald Gráinne", she shaved her head to convince her father to let her travel on a boat to Spain when she was a young girl. Like many others, she was a real historical figure, but there's a whole mythology that has spruing up around her too.  You can read about her on Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gr%C3%A1inne_N%C3%AD_Mh%C3%A1ille

Always thought she'd be a cool game character.

As others have said though, there's vast amounts of Irish, Greek, Norse, Roman and Sumerian/Babylonian mythology that hasn't really been tapped into by games, not even by DAoC.

There are groups within this realm, based on fantasy, legend, mythology, etc.

King Arthur and his Knights. Merlin, Lancelot, Galahad.

Robin Hood and his Outlaws. Friar Tuck, Little John, Alan-a-dale.

I was thinking it would be a good idea to have competing factions within each realm. There are two or three other realms, but since most non-copyrighted mythology, legend, and lore is based on humans and not undead, vampires, goblins, elves, and werewolves-- the rest is probably going to be purely made up on the spot. But for the human's lore and factions, I thought of having commonly-known fairy tales, folklore, etc.

Being a long-time DAoC player, King Arthur is obviously the first choice.

Being a long-time Robin Hood fan, I thought it would be cool if Robin Hood was an outlaw (Saxons) who fought against King Arthur (Normans).

But I wanted two or more other factions.

Since the Knights of the Round live in castles and Merry Men live in forests, I thought Ali Baba (Forty Thieves, Aladdin, Prince Ali, etc.) would be a great third competing faction. A faction of thieves, bandits, and murderers based on an arabian theme (as opposed to Saxon and Norman themes) based on the Forty Thieves, Aladdin, and similar fiction. I don't know though, as I thought of keeping it european medieval or having the thieves live in the alleys and underground catacombs of the cities as opposed to caves. (Loved Everquest 1, Qeynos rogue area)

Besides King Arthur, Robin Hood, and Forty Thieves legends and lore-- what other pieces of fiction might be a good idea for a human kingdom (which may or may not include Dwarves, Halflings, Minotaurs, and Centaurs--- kindof like a completely redone and loose fiction OF robin hood and king arthur which include these other races)

WHAAAAT KING ARTHUR A NORMAN? NOOOOOOOOOO

Sorry... I can't let that stand. King Arthur represents the pre-Saxon culture, the original Celts not some bloody Normans! >:(

Other human groups: The Three Kingdoms (Shu, Wu, Wei). The Rebels of the Water Margin. Both are very popular in China and all over Asia, and all human. Or Alexander the Great and his generals. Oh yes and the heroes of the Nibelungen, Siegfried, Hagen von Tronje asf. There you get something. (But pls never again say my beloved King Arthur is a NORMAN! =P )

Just make it a Time Bandits MMO and you could throw in any historial or semi mythic historical or even purely mythical characters you like.

"otherwise it would be historicly inacurate nightmare"

A historically inaccurate nightmare when mixing two FICTIONAL characters- both from medieval times?

I do not mean to be rude, but I think a lot of people here are missing the point. Fiction is...fiction. Mythology and Lore, perhaps even history itself is twisted, often inaccurate or dilluted, and drastically changed (usually in dramatic ways).

Robin Hood started out as one story and ended up a very different one. Characters were added, cut, or entirely changed (Robin Hood Men in Tights anyone? Perhaps Monty Python's Holy Grail?)

King Arthur and Robin Hood are both fictional characters based on mythical stories about holy grails, magical faeries, wizards, and all kinds of drama. They are both medieval, both extremely loose fiction, but most of all...

Who is to say what is and isn't accurate based on loose fiction and ever-changing myth? Who is to say Robin Hood doesn't have an army, or that King Arthur DOES? For all we could say, King Arthur might have been a random mercenary with a few partners, not a king with an entire army. Also, the Merry Men could constitute a large army...and in a lot of stories they were large enough to tackle the opposing army. In fact, who says King Arthur is even good? If you wanted, it wouldn't be much of a twist to make him secretly evil, trying to find the holy grail to destroy it. The wonderful thing about fiction is how ludicrous it is in the first place, and how you can take bits and pieces of it to make your own story while retaining some of the same (often dramatically well-written) elements.

This is a medieval high-fantasy theme. That doesn't mean there can't be crossbows, catapults, but also cannons and guns. Look at Warhammer, or WoW. High Fantasy could even have robots (Warforge!) but it doesn't mean it becomes so "historically inaccurate" that it should just become Robocop vs. Robin Hood (who is a Terminator and King of New California)

Keep your minds open as well as the realization that fiction is just that: fiction.

Thanks for all the ideas, even the off-theme ones. I appreciate the brainstorming.

I really liked the idea of Pirates and Blackbeard. I am trying to stray away from asian themes (I love them, and I love the three kingdoms, but I do not think that Asian themes go together as well with European Medieval fiction.) Arabic themes like Ali-Baba and the Forty Thieves, I can see going well together. Afterall, Robin Hood's King Richard fought in the Crusades, and King Arthur also was part of the quest for the holy grail (Crusader-like conquest) making them similar in theme. Also both are of the mace, longswords, chainmail era.

I also very much appreciate the French theme idea. Perhaps the Cardinal from the Three Musketeers along with the guy with the scar! LoL. That's a little after the era of longbows and chainmail though. Joan of Arc is a great historicla figure, and the bald pirate woman along with blackbeard could be another great faction.

Perhaps there could even be two types of Paladin classes (Variants) depending on if you're a french Inquisitor or an Arthurian Crusader.

You know the best part of all of this though? The fact Cary Elwes is in both Robin Hood:  Men in Tights and Princess Bride... LoL...
