As per the news item posted in the news section, I'm not too surprised by any of it.
1) Delay - I always thought that they would have issues upgrading that much old code. I feel sorry for them having to do that job. It's a horrible job, especially when they say the commenting wasn't done properly. Next to the proper coding, it's the next most important thing to have.
2) Servers - After 7 years of running, and all the crashes and glitches in between, it's amazing there are still original servers still running. It'll be nice to see how everything runs when they get their new hardware up and running. I'm almost tempted to go back to Darktide once it's all in place. There will be a lot of miffed people if their world doesn't get selected for the upgrade though... although spending millions more ontop of everything done to date (namely exp pack) I'm not surprised they don't have the budget. After all, they just bought their own game back just recently.
3) Expected price - Not bad for an expansion pack... seeing a lot of expansion packs (online and offline) are coming close to comparing to the original game purchase price. For example Diablo and Diablo II. I bought original of each for approx 49.99. The exp pack for each was about 40.00. 29.99 isn't too bad at all, and as they have more than paid off the game, it will bring in a huge profit to Turbine.
4) Gems - Was it just me, or was I the only one that didn't have enough free pack space? After spell comps, DIs, various wands, weapons, armor, potions, and all the other "junk" that I needed with me for one reason or another I never seemed to have enough. Now they want to introduce gems on top of that? I don't know if I like that. It is nice to get pre-order in-game items. I prefer the way Guild Wars has done their pre-order. Depending on where you buy the pre-order, you get a different item. For example, you could give out an uber wand at EB Games, a melee weapon at CompUSA, etc etc. Personally the gems are nice, but not something one of my characters could use too well.
This is the first "real" news I have seen from the "powers that be" at Turbine. I appreciate their honesty rather than trying to rationalize everything or make it sound like it isn't their fault. Not many companies will take ownership like that.

A bit more defined, and clearer.

Uh, those are pretty weak upgrades. Glenden Wood is pretty good but the trees in Sawato are awful. Maybe I'm just too used to the original graphics. Also I think they went overboard with JPEG compression. So, I guess it could be better than it looks.
The screenshot of the new island and armor is much more impressive. http://ac.turbinegames.com/files/06/24/72/78/223.jpg
the penguins are awesome too though... but i think the expansion should be like 20 bucks.. oh well..turbine will only be able to do the hardware upgrade on DT soon.. but it will take a while to do it on the other servers
I can understand why it would take a while. They can't just go out and buy a $400 computer. Most companies that buy all new servers spend millions on them. They aren't cheap. They are designed to run for long periods of time, and able to hand huge amount of traffic.
It does kind of bite that it will take a while, but at least they are looking at upgrading them. Better slow then never, I suppose. heh.
hardware on DT and a few others, the question is, which "few"

i would probally return to ac1 if the expansion is good but i haven't enjoyed ac1 from back in the old days when nerfs were unheard of. ucmers idiots weren't there either *sigh*. thats what i miss i tried the verdatine server not too long ago when it opened open and omg ucmers and guilds of ucmers got to 126 like in 4 days... also buff bots were fun at first but how they sped the game up in the long run eh. kinda miss the old spellcasting method but the new one is good :P but sadly i know the expansion won't do anything about the annoyance of decal well most of its pluggins =/
Actually, with the release of Turbine's API, they COULD ban Decal.
They could include the ability to create the "good" plugins, but not Eltank and what not.
hmm decal does has few good pluggins but its turbine who should make their own pluggins since i know oracle of dereth gave me a big advantage on darktide. i saw a high level player and ran...
i like el tank except for what it is making more ucmers i would like to see actual players not computers
all they did was reskin some places in the game... I still play AC1 and am a subscriber but I was hoping that ToD would bring a entirely new graphics engine.....
I've always wondered.. why cant they just import the AC2 engine...its not like they dont have the source or the manpower ..cuz i mean lets face it reskinning everything takes a long time as it is so why not just implement an entirely newly remodeled and remeshed world... to me i dont get it because IMHO this is still the best MMO there is all it needs is updated graphics and sound
heh
