Ok, I got a 512, to replace one of my 256 modules. So I take the 256 out of the first slot, put the 512 in, and start it up. I should have 768 or something. It still says I have 512. I have DDR Dimm if you need to know. Why does it keep saying I still have 512. All of em are clipped in right. Also, On my 256, it has those little black sqaures on both sides, but on the 512, it only has them on one side. Is that something?? Please help

hmm, well the squares both sides doesn't matter
I'm just trying to wonder what could be the problem...
try and switch out the current 256 with the other 256 you took out, see if that does anything

They screwed up the order if it is just 2 sticks of 256MB. If it is 2 sticks of 512 MB you are fine. If there is 4 sticks of 256 MB you are fine.

You dont understand. All I ordered was one stick of 512. I currently have 2 slots, each with 256. Im looking to replace one with the 512. When I start the compu, it only reads as 512, not 768. It wont read the one as 512. Only 256

While they probably did screw the order up in that event, you might want to check RAM compatibility and exactly how the RAM is being recognised by your system.
Can someone verify that the ram will work in my system, cause I know it would. And it does, but it only shows 256 of the 512 for some reason. Heres my compu link

And heres the RAM link

Its the same Type, DDR, speed 2100, CAS latency 2.5. I dont see why it doesnt see the 512, and reads it only as a 256. Can someone tell me it should work fine of my system though?

Send me the link your motherboard. Also, try Windows Memory Dig- http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp#top. Then give me a cpu-z log(www.cpu-z.com), not sure how your computer is detecting it.
Dont know where to find my motherboard.

this is all speculation. but i had this problem on my old P3 sony.and it wasnt the right type of ram, in ur case the ram might not have been pc 2100.
but this is even more of speculation, sometimes i have heard some brands of memory dont work with each other. like my friend got a 512 mg PC 3200 corsair ram stick and it wouldnt recognize the other ram. so i think the brands might sometimes have to be compatible.
but i hope u solve ur problem

Nope L2 Cache is CPU Memory and has nothing to do with RAM. I would go and ask compaq/HP what ram your PC uses/motherboard model(they have a forum board). Mixing and matching ram is really a risky business. One thing, if you want to go matching again. I would advice that you get ram with the same latencys 2.5,3,3,6 PC 2100 ram. If not, I did read the compaq pcs are using the old versions of PC2100 that are made different then the newer ones, but it was only forum sepulation.
One question- do you have a 512 stick and a 256 stick?, beacuse CPU-Z is showing that "# of memory modules 2", so your computer might know it there.
Good luck either way

Your computer is old. Your bios/motherboard might not support more than 512megs period. Try talking to Hp about your compaq, and see whats compatible. See if you can upgrade your Bios.
Also your memory is made by Micron says it in your comp info, try talking to a rep there
I wish you luck

Okay, now I'm confused as all hell. With both your 256 sticks, your system reads 512M. Okay. With one of the 256's replaced with a 512, your system still reads 512.
It sounds to me like a memory incompatibility is causing your new 512 stick to "mute" the other 256 stick. Try one of these fixes:
If your modules are of different speeds, the slowest one MUST be in slot 0!
Luckily, DDR RAM generally doesn't have the same kind of compatibility issues like PC100-PC133 did; but compatibility issues can and do still crop up.
On the plus side: Your new 512M stick does work!
Already tried both solutions. Also tried it on a friends computer. Put the 512 in alone, and still reads only 256. Its gotta be packaged wrong or shot or something. They are same speeds so thats not the problem. Any other suggestions, or should I send it back?
Also, when I put the 512 in alone, it reads it as 256. So it cant be muting the others out.

If it was newegg, call them up and ask for a refund or a resending. They will express it for no extra charge. You will need to send the otehr stick back, though.
