Experienced player looking for a new MMORPG.

ManasuManasu Member UncommonPosts: 212

Hello everyone :).This is my first thread and wanted to ask if there is any MMO that I may like.

To start with,I've played a good many MMOs(DaOC,WoW,Aion,GW,AoC,EVE,Darkfall and more..).I really liked the main idea of Darkfall but unfortunately it was completely different,I mean wasting sooo much time on grinding and grinding..So I am looking for a MMO that focuses on:

I)Player economy and crafting(Not like WoW/Aion's etc)

II)Players travel to trade/sell their items and so on.

III)Decent world/open PvP(able to loot preferably).

IV)Preferably instanced PvE.

VI)Places to travel and explore.

VII)Decent graphics.

Extras would be: Player house-building,Sea combat and generaly not being that easy.

I know that description really seems like Darkfall, but I played it for about 10 months and It doesn't really excite me(cause of bugs, exploits, grinding, mind numbing situations and so on..)

*Doesn't really matter if its P2P or F2P*

Thank you!

Sandbox MMORPGs that are not very well-known but definitely worth a look:

Ryzom, Haven and Hearth, Xsyon, The Repopulation, UO private shards, Mortal Online, Darkfall 1 remakes (New Dawn or Rise of Agon), RPG MO, Project Gorgon, EQ: Sanctuary (custom  server)

First I have played a good number of MMO's as well.

Well, the closest thing I could think of that meets the majority of your requirements would be Guild Wars.

It doesn't have open PVP but people who enjoy heavy PVP tend to speak highly of GW's pvp system.

(i play guild wars from time to time but not the PVP so I can't personally speak for it)

the crafting system is unique as it is more reverse engineering. you find items break them apart and build new items with the components.  since the towns act as lobbys in the game, people travel to different towns to sell their newly crafted goods.

no sea combat of course but thats hard to come by ( a shame)

the PVE is all instance based.  again the towns are like lobbys so when you leave a town its just you and who you take with you.

the game has absolutely no grind.   the level cap is 20 and you reach it about a 1/4th of the way through the game.  the game emphasizes player skill and choices instead.

I hope this helps, sorry I couldn't offer any better suggestion, but on an up note this game is a lot of fun and its one I return to often.

Thank you for the response wildtalent.Well firstly,I have played the free GW trial and arguably it has a nice combat/class system. But its server economy/trading doesn't seem that good,I mean its more of the classic WoWish one..And I really hated the movement system, I mean I didn't feel "free",and this ain't good while PvPing..

I know you listed as having played it before, but the only game that I feel fits almost all of your requirements is EVE. Perhaps you could give it another try if it was a long time ago?

I would suggest giving AoC another go since Funcom has polished it up quite a bit. Or, although Star Wars Galaxies isn't the game it used to be, it has a lot of what you are looking for. And...the current Dev team is really trying hard to resurrect the game. If you do decide to play SWG, go to Starsider server for the population.

Also...Runes of Magic and Soul of the Ultimate Nation (S.U.N.) are your best bets for f2p. You may want to research ROM first though...I have been reading that they are starting to become money hungry and end game items must be purchased to enjoy end game play.

    I hope this helps!

Cheers for the response Dreathor.Well yeah, Its been almost 1 age I played EVE online, but I don't really like Sci-fi and tbh found it rather complicated..

Hello bigsmiff, a really helpful answer.First,I've been playing AoC for a long time, having a Priest of Mitra and reached endgame content, was a mediocre game imo.Economy was again WoW-ish, PvP was very nice, and PvE really sucked as a healer.Would like to see how is now with the new expansion though..About the SWG, tbh I don't really like Sci-fi MMOs, but gonna have a look as it sounds interesting.About the F2P games sound rather interesting too gonna see how they are like.Really thank you, was helpful!

You could try Wurm Online on the wild server. The combat isn't OMG MIND BLOWN exciting but it is very detailed. The crafting system however, puts combat to SHAME. Just to give you an example, here's how you make a hammer:

-You mine out some iron ore (you are given a pickaxe at start but if you don't have one... you have to make one)

-You bring said ore to a firepit, stone oven, or stone furnace (start the fire with kindling then throw some wood on... logs, planks, even some wooden items will do)

-Let the ore heat until it melts. (At this stage, you can walk away and do something else, like cut a shaft out of a log, which you will need later...)

-Come back to glowing metal. Take it out of the furnace, and hammer it on an anvil until it turns into a hammerhead or it turns to scrap, which you must let cool, and then heat up again (or have more metal ready)

-If you haven't already, you must use a carving knife to cut a shaft from a log, and then attach the hammerhead to it. If all goes well, you now have a hammer

-Improve the hammer: you must keep the hammer hot by cycling it in and out of the fire/furnace while hammering it, tempering it, and filing it, to improve its quality.

Now if that doesn't sound like an advanced crafting system, I don't know what is. Seriously, if you want to do some crafting (without going to the OMFG RIDICULOUS depths of A Tale in the Desert) Wurm Online is your game. Note that Wurm Online has player owned housing, boats, and terraforming... (the homes/boats are built by players, and the homes can be heavily customized)

The Wild server is open PVP between 3 factions. PVE is not traditional at all. There are no quests, no missions. Just animals and a handful of monsters to kill, and aside from fight skill on the wild server, hunting is typically only done for the resources, like leather and meat.

Havn't tried MO and Darkfall was ok but bugs and other graphical issues kind of annoyed me.. especially for a subscription based game.

O_O.I can admit it's really interesting, I don't really mind so much about PvP so it seems a great tradeskill MMO.The system of  trading Euros with In-game money is kinda sucky >.<,but I am watching further to it now and gonna play it soon.Great advice Adardowen, thanks. And by the way, if you could give me more info about PvE would be nice :D.

Well, graphical issues is not that major for not playing to be honest, it absolutely requires a very good PC with a nice graphic card etc to enjoy it.After many patches and one expansion bugs were erased but still there are eploits and more...The only problem is that its from a Greek production and the budget is low, so they can't invest so much money..
