Collision Detection (with poll)

El_LionEl_Lion Member UncommonPosts: 154

Collision Detection ... Does Guild Wars 2 has it? Any clues yet? Would you like it? Would you hate it? Do you care?

I certainly like collision detection as it makes fights more tactical than when you/mobs/other players can just run through your 'line of warriors' for exaple. CD would make positioning important in a fight, or at least, more important than without it.

Those are my thoughys. What are your thoughts (see poll too).

Results of the poll after 175 votes (for guests):

Body Block ..
Yes please! - 64.0%
No please! - 9.1%
Don't Care - 11.4%
Only in PvE - 0.6%
Only in PvP - 14.9%

The prob with body block is that it's just as unrealistic as moving through mobs/players. While you realistically can't expect to run through creatures you'll have an equally hard time to remain stationary and block a 350 pound Charr in battlearmor that has decided he wants to go past you or an asura dodging around you. So thanks, but no thanks.

As much as it was very irritating getting stuck in a bunch of mobs or npcs in GW1, I think it's good for PvP regardless and would like to see it in game.

Even though I voted yes I must agree... Asura blocking Charr is quite ridiculous:)

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them

could you please call it character collision? your choice of words make my brain hurt.  yes it should be in, but possibly more  casual. It could possibly stop players temporarily unless people try to keep walking through causing the character to pass through each other.

    age of conan has it.

in a perfect world it would be awesome but its not practical.

You cant gather alot of people at the same location when you have this feature. Think about the calculations the server will have to make. Normally your location with the time stamp is just 4 numbers.[x-y-z-time] When its calculating spells, attacks etc. it will just make simple distance calculations. When you make yourself a circle instead of a dot, the number of calculations and their complexity increases. This coupled with increasing number of people will increase number calculations exponentially which will result in a crash, lag etc.

It's called collision detection, not body block.

If you tell 10 random ppl 'collision detection' - 8 of them will ask 'what is that?'

    Body Block is more clear.

Pointless reply is pointless - like mine :]

    /ON

    I voted YES btw.

I love the way Dungeons and dragons online handles this. So a big yes.

I hate in WoW when fighting 20 mobs and they all try and stand in the same spot.

When I read this I kind of thought, 'well with all the other amazingly innovative features they've put in this game, maybe they can figure out a way to bring body blocking (or whatever you choose to call it) into GW2 successfully'.

But unfortunately that's just it. IMO it's better to have no body block than a body block that works badly - if it did work realistically it would add a whole new element to the game (although balancing races because of size may become an issue) but unless it is realistic its a definitive NO.

ty lol was about to post the same thing. Had no idea what the OP meant by body block at first till I read his post then I couldn't help but lol.

And yes lol it's called collision detection lol. Please use that instead of body block as most will probably think your talking about some kind of skill or something XD.

IMO that's what keeps a PvP in a very high tactical level, like in GW1.

Bad part of it was that if you played at over a 200 ms latency you'd face rubberbanding, and the worst part was when your client wouldn't recognize your real location until you were dead, say, in a GvG you were the flag runner and you got blocked but in your client you're still moving around and  taking damage from nowhere until the monk shouts on Vent "IDIOT! I AM NOT HEALING YOU ANYMORE, YOU'RE STAYING STILL AND MY MANA IS RUNNING OUT".

They could make it more realistic according to size, strength, magical means, etc, but I guess they won't for the same reason every race will have the same movement speed, probably jumping height, etc.

Darkfall called, they want to know what sad game you played where you can't get many people together with collision detection, because the 600 man battles in Darkfall beg to differ :)

I definitely want to see it included. It adds significantly to team strategy, e.g. melee and middies blocking enemy melee from getting to your backline. In 5x5 it may not be quite as effective, but I don't see any reason not include it. With body blocking, you have to pay more attention to your positioning than you would otherwise.

I think someone should ask the developers. I really would love to know the answer.

Edited. Always used the term body block until now, didn't know the official term was collision detection.

Ofc YES! It makes the game more tactical and realistic if implemented right. For example dividing characters/monsters in size categories (small/medium/large/huge/etc...) and beeing able to "block" only equal sized/cant "block" bigger sizes/cant be "blocked" by smaller sizes. Though this will add more calculations for the servers to manage...

  • MMO_DoubterMMO_Doubter Member Posts: 5,056

Yes. Collision detection is a very good thing - IF it doesn't make too much of a demand on the game engine. I think this is a major factor in WH Online's poor performance.

I loved having it in NWN, and really missed it when I moved to WoW.

You could do a partial implementation by giving a 'block' ability to tank classes only. That would give them value in PvP.

Yes. That would be a great system, but as you said - what cost in terms of server performance?

In a perfect world, these MMOs would have physics and a 350-pound (or whatever) Charr(izard) charging at one of those stupid Gnome-ripoff things (no, I'm not familiar with GW) would knock the stupid Gnome-ripoff thing back about 100 feet (approx). In that case, collision detection would be perfect. Similarly, if one of your Gnome-ripoff friends was being a goofball and blocking the only door to the city's [insert main attraction here], a running start and impact should clear that problem (so it'd apply to allies as well as enemies).

AoC has collision detection, and they try to solve the problem of allies blocking your path by having the Crouch function. It's an adequate solution, but it's funny as hell to see one guy on a horse standing in the middle of a bridge, knocking noobs who try to run past him off into the raging river below (and hearing their rage-filled PMs of indignation). Of course, after about 5 minutes, one guy is smart enough to Crouch past. Doh!

WAR. Keep fights. Tank wall. Collision detection worked well. The only way through was to either kill the tanks or to knock them all back, but even if you did knock 'em back, there was a whole garrison of enemy healers and DPS to pick you off as you ran into the Lord's room. Nevermind the Keep Lord (and his retinue) himself. Now, I played before they added a second ramp, so I don't know if this is how Keep fights still work. I'm just talking about when I played. There is nothing more fun than lobbing AoE bombs down at Destruction players trying to get past your tank wall, and retreating to the center of the room with only 5% health left after they all target you (since you're one of the only ones in their line of sight).

So, collision detection, even in an imperfect implementation? Yes. It's realistic, it adds a new dynamic to PvP, and you can easily spot how many enemies you're facing instead of having the possibility of ten (or fifty!?!?) of them stacked in one spot (good ol' RuneScape PvP!)

(Yes, I went heavy on the parenthesis this time).

body block vs collision detection...who really cares if everyone knows whats being referred to...

I voted for collision detection(CD) in mmo's as it is an obvious evolution towards realism and strategy in gameplay.

Would like to see it based on mass though as said previous as hard blocking of a characters movement is just annoying if someone stands in a doorway, etc.

CD would ideally involve things like pushes, knockbacks/knockdowns, and momentum to a degree. Not physics sim. realism, but enough to get the job done through some creative programming.

Also having CD in games really needs to have mechanics that take advantage of it...

When I was waiting for WAR I was so excited to imagine super cool shield walls to protect the casters and stuff, but as we all know group PvP is mostly relegated to zerg chaos. So why not make abilities that allowed things like formations? Tanks get the shield wall ability, sure, but it's self only. How about it locks you to the next tank and gives synergy bonuses to blocking to encourage formation tactics...there is a thing called autofollow already, can't tell me it would be that hard to make the first person in the wall be the leader of the formation.

    UO,AC1&2,EQ1&2,DAOC,SB,SWG,FFXI, Horizons,EvE,E&B,AO,WoW,VG, Lineage,GW,TR,LotR,AoC,CoH,DDO a myriad of FtP...and still looking...

I haven't found collision detection to really add anything to PvP in my experience. Either the "tanks" don't use it (correctly), or there is only very rare circumstances where it can be used. And often times, even when players try to use it as a strategy, it is easily circumvented.

Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.

Dunno in WAR I use it all the time, even in skirmishes... if you see that Marauder/Witchelf zeroing in right on your healer/flag carrier /whatever and its obvious he's CC immune you need to step in front of him and block for those few precious seconds needed for the squishy to get away.

IMO CD adds immensely to both gameplay and realism, especially in PvP, and if they can do it I really think they should.
