Aye there is no doubt that stupidity plays a part to some extent

I used to visit this site a lot however in recent years it has become the home of negative forum posts, illogical opinions and tantrums so I visit less often.

Just to play the devil's advocate here...

...I see some people posting about how WoW is in league with the Gold Farmers and stuff, and frankly I think this is pretty unlikely. What I think is more likely, is that that Blizzard has someone they have employed who has access to account information, and sells them to the highest gold-farming bidder. Everyone has their price. And this kind of activity can happen at any of the major gaming companies, not just Blizzard, and even at your local bank.

Keep that in mind. Your financial safety hinges on the integrity of the people who have access to your information. (This is not ENTIRELY true, as there's a lot more to it, especially in banking, but it's something to think about.)

Sense this is a Cyber Crime wouldn't the Police from those countries be involved in this I mean we all like to game rite but if they found a goldmine like this with tons of stolen data make's you wonder what will they try next or already have and just haven't been caught yet.

Who's going to prosecute? The Chinese government? Now there's a laugh.

I agree that an inside man is a viable explanation.  The credit card I mentioned in my earlier post was never used by me however the persons using it fraudulently not only knew the card number / expiry date /  3 digit code but also knew my address as they called up the bank and pretended to be me to change my old address to an address in London (120 miles from where I really live).   It had to be a leak of data from the bank and if the security of a bank can fail so can the lesser security of an online game.

Stupidity must play a part as well though.  Using the same password for everything and never changing it is far from wise.

Back when the Tiger Woods scandal broke out, I saw an interview with a private detective in which he was asked how phone records/messages/voice mails get out so often.  The PI claimed that any decent PI or reporter has an inside guy at one or more of the phone companies.  I don't think it would be a stretch to think that some employee of an mmo company would be willing to sale account info for the right price.

You would think there should be some way to protect your data-and-there isn't! The information that is available on the web about you, and your finances is amazing and scary!
