Interesting, it will probably work, may even serve as a filter for ToR.

Interesting but the info released seems very basic for a game.  Mostly mini-games not much in the way of depth.  But we never know... has to be better then SWG

since its free to play (and probably even more cartoony than ToR) I bet it will filter out some of the riff-raff. Like my 13 year old nephew for instance :P

SOE won't even have to do any work. Lucas Arts can just have Bioware share their cartoon graphics with SOE.

And those playing SWG can now say goodbye.

Here comes "Free" Realms 2, money-grabbing wise.

Sounds more interesting than SWTOR.... and they both will have the same cartoony graphics.

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

I hate people. I really do....

    Anyways....

    This gives me hope.

Hope that Lucasarts is allowing this new Clone Wars game to be their kid friendly f2p cash cow and allowing Bioware to make ToR into the more 'adult' themed Star Wars MMO it should be.

Just simply based on demographics, most kids will better associate with the Clone Wars series and their parents will love the F2P option.

Where as the more adult/experienced MMO crowd will favor ToR and their financial model (likely subscription only)

I think they are just reskinning Free Realms with Star Wars graphics.

You really think they can scrap and rebuild ToR in less than 12 months?

It has a price tag that many parents can easily understand and get behind. So while I doubt very much any true competition to The Old Republic I doubt it will help any.

That's exactly what it sounds like.  Great idea though.

Droid programming as a skill ?

The ability to "throw a party in your player house" ?

Almost sounds like they are turning SWG into a F2P for kiddies. Perhaps they can just re-use the codebase, and re-skin the character models in a cartoony style...

And with the cash shop and "embedded" cardgame, they can get the kids to nag their parents to death for the latest shiny trinkets or card sets. Brilliant !

Well this is for kiddies. It's target audience is kids, not adults.  I for one think it's great. My daughter will love it and i'll probably enjoy it too.

Well, speculation on this project can stop because there it is...  I hope its a good venture for both companies.

    Really?

This sounds like a really intelligent deal/choice for both LA and SOE.  It will probably borrow heavily from SOE's Free Realms, which is a quality kids mmo.  I am not sure how successful Free Realms has been, but I have tried it and it looks like a gem to me, as far as free to play western kids mmos go.  Having a IP like Clone Wars is just what SOE needs to push a game like Free Realms.

I hope they do a good job.  Somehow I feel like this is much less of a slap in the face to SWG fans than KOTOR was, probably because in my opinion (and others looking for a sandbox mmo like pre-CU SWG) KOTOR is low quality mindless gaming geared towards me, where as this game is more of an introduction to gaming in general for young adults and just meant to be silly casual fun.

Oh just what we needed another animated MMO.  Well since SOE is doing it, you can pretty much expect to be far less than expectations.

  • McGamerMcGamer Member UncommonPosts: 1,073

This certainly creates mixed feelings. I have always loved star wars and like seeing the franchise do well, but with SOE at the helm it could end badly for LA and the SW franchise itself.

    Hogswallow.

Free Realms is a massive success. This will be too.

Clone Wars Advetures for the pre-teens.

    TOR for the teens.

I wish they'd release a Star Wars MMO for adults now.

    No, it's not.

They keep spouting all these millions of players, but the servers never grow.

And ToR barely qualifies as being aimed at teens, I'd consider it on equal footing in the childrens demographic with Clone Wars.

There was a Star Wars mmo for adults, but it failed. It's final incarnation's death looms even closer now.

They had it and flushed it down the toilet.  I have little hope for anything from LA/SOE being aimed at the adult crowd.  Guess we just don't bring up images of $$$ in their minds.

Why they couldn't have just done this 5 years ago and left me my SWG.

Recently I was experiencing a moment of weakness and I almost, almost starting giving Sony money again by subscribing to Vanguard. Man I'm glad I didn't give in. Picking at this scab just reminds me why I do not do business with this company.

Ya'll need to look at this as the Star Wars MMO for the 8-12 year olds. It's not a replacement for SWG or TOR. It's for little kids. I showed this to my daughter (who is 9) and she is excited because there will be 0 real depth. Just a fun game to play for 30-45 minutes when she is bored of other things.
