I see this, too. Same approach, exactly. I'd played Free Realms for a short while, checked it out, and the overall model is surprisingly good. However, I'm not inclined to pay just to unlock over half of the game, including some of the most basic character options.
Why they couldn't have just done this 5 years ago and left me my SWG.
Recently I was experiencing a moment of weakness and I almost, almost starting giving Sony money again by subscribing to Vanguard. Man I'm glad I didn't give in. Picking at this scab just reminds me why I do not do business with this company.
And then there's this excellent point. I also followed along with some of the readers here, checking out Vanguard again. It is an excellent game (so very long after its horribly buggy release), but I hold no trust with this company. None. They'd have to do an employee overhaul from the ground up to the top to pull me back in.
Free Realms is a massive success. This will be too.
And ToR barely qualifies as being aimed at teens, I'd consider it on equal footing in the childrens demographic with Clone Wars.
Because?
no explanation? I see it as fitting in with an adult demographic just fine.
Adults actually have no issues with stylized or cartoony graphics. There are plenty of examples of adult entertainment or entertainment that spans age ranges that are animated in one way or another.
It seems made so that casual players can get in and have some fun and get off. I assume that falls into working adults or busy adults.
I know many younger people tend to have more time outside of school unless of course they are involved in sports or music or theater.
I don't see anything that points to SWToR as falling in with just teen sensibilities.
And would the majority of teens actually be into playing video games? Instead of socializing with friends?
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
This one gets the big I pass... I don't play any SOE games, can't trust them, the poor kiddies that will play this one will be the next victims of SOE/LA, a whole new generation to give the shaft to..LOL I will be playing the Bioware SWTOR, /crosses fingers LA stays away..:)
From what I can see CLW doesn't have any normal ground combat.
You have tower defence and saber duels, nothing anywhere on the site, trailer or previews has mentioned anything like the combat instances you get in FR.
Hopefully I'm just missing something, but that to me, is a pretty big omission for an MMO.
Looks extremely good, my kids are now getting interested in the Starwars Universe thanks to the Clone Wars animated series, I may have to give this a shot aswell, seeing as it's coming out before SWTOR.
I am a child of the 70's. My brain has been programed to think that anything to do with Star Wars is cool. Even the Holiday special. Must get.......game........have to....try...to....resist.......if...I...could...just move....my arm!......forgeting....personal....feelings....about....developers.......must try.....to....resist! In all seriousnes though it may be a laugh. Will be having a go for sure at release.

Just give in and do it! I spent the last two years bouncing around MMOs doing everything I could to avoid giving SOE my money. After wasting money on AoC, WAR, and the last two WoW expansions I figured out I might as well play a game with great group content that I enjoy. As much as I hate SOE after ruining SWG and pushing VG out the door the way they did, I'm still happier playing VG than I have been in a long time.
Heh yeah, but FR wasn't so bad! I liked to play a while. If this game is another filler, and this time with more action than FR, why not? It looks better than I expected tbh. Guess we'll see.
Launching this in the fall seems to be a little inconsiderate of ToR which is probably going for a Spring 2011 launch. As ToR is aiming for the causal younger market (I know some people won't believe me but trust in that there will be cartoonish graphics, no violence and much single player goodness) and this clone wars F2P seems to be lauched at the causal younger market as well. Only it will be out first and liable to be more popular in this demographic with it being free to play. The causal gamer may dislike the idea of paying to play and with this and GW2 on the market around the launch of ToR this may see a loss in some of the potential player base.
I know ToR will no doubt be a vastly superior game but when you need 2 million subs to make a profit, you don't really want to be going into the market just after christmas (when people are often a little broke) with tons of competition much of which is free to play. Or at least it wouldn't seen like a good idea to me.

bleh... teh capitalist imperium (tries to) strike again.... coca cola zero anyone?
george, you should really try to get off that arty entertainy your-own-kids-rob-you-with-starry-eyes stuff... it's so eighty-nineties.. gmo food and carbon monopolies are teh stuff right now.
pathetic. hope the investors get their money back. pity to see old folks homeless.
Hope that Lucasarts is allowing this new Clone Wars game to be their kid friendly f2p cash cow and allowing Bioware to make ToR into the more 'adult' themed Star Wars MMO it should be.
Just simply based on demographics, most kids will better associate with the Clone Wars series and their parents will love the F2P option.
Where as the more adult/experienced MMO crowd will favor ToR and their financial model (likely subscription only)
I was literally thinking the same thing as I was reading about the new clone wars kiddy MMO... Hopefully, this will be reason enough for Bioware to target the 18+ crowd for TOR...

I liked the clone wars games for the Wii, but this game has SOE behind it. Only means one thing...$$$$$$. SOE is so greedy, I won't touch any of thier games. They hook you in, then next thing you know you'll have a $50,000 credit card bill in the mail lol

Player: "Holy crap, I just looted a [ Lightsabre of Kraytian Death ]! WOOT!!"
SOE the following day: "As you've seen in our Station Cash Storefront, the "Lightsabre of Kraytian Death" is now available to everyone for the low price of $25.00. Unfortunately, some loot tables ingame were mixed up before this announcement, allowing the "Lightsabre of Kraytian Death" to become droppable. This has been rectified, and anyone who received this item through ingame means will find it has been removed from their inventory and replaced with a fashionable "I love SOE" tunic as compensation. We regret the inconvenience."

I have yet to put may hands on TOR but from the graphics to the game play it's effectively far from AoC nor even SWG.
Still let's see, CWA has:
Cartoonish graphics
Space combat
Housing
Swoop races
Mini games (Pazaak...)
Customizable pets (droids)
Character customization
So apart the story pillar why would one pay to play TOR, provided you aren't a $oE hater...?

Well, i think it will be cool until SWTOR..

After watching the trailer, it looks decent. It will be popular I believe, but I'll continue to just stick to the show.
Anybody watch this and see if there was any huge resemblences between this and Freerealms? I've never played Freerealms so I wouldn't know.

really interesting, might give it a try when it comes out
I always thought Clone Wars would make a good MMO.
However the aimed at children aspect of it puts me off (only things such as racing for credits etc)

We're all kids somewhere deep in our hearts ... I hope
