I blew my money on AIon when it came out, two copies actually since I played with my gf, and it was a complete waste. The game isn't western enough.
Too much of a grind, too much in the form of consumable spamming (this is widely popular in the East). However, in the west, most of us see popping potions (especially MANY of them) during a fight as outside interference and puss stuff.
The game looks pretty, very pretty, but the grind is too much. I made it into the 30's before I couldn't do it anymore, and that's considering it had just barely started getting grindy. I heard they are doing something to xp rates and adding more quests or something? That would be the time to check this out again.
+ beautiful graphic (AoC is outstanding too but the animations do suck)
+ reaching lvl 50 is an accomblishment
+ large scale PvP BUT Abyss PvP = zergfest
+ PvE endgame needs tons of work there aren't any raidzones yet (AoC has some but they are short and easy)
+ top gear = top (AoC top gear is just better NOT top)
+ better story presentation (voice over is gone after leaving Tortage in AoC)
So at the end it really comes down to your own preferences. If you like fast paced combat, more realistic graphics and can deal with a heavily instanced game -> AoC. If you like Anime, open world and working for successs -> Aion.

Having played 2 characters in aion (1 to lvl 50 and 1 to lvl 42) and been been in the top legion on my server (while i played) I have to say aion does suck.
Recently I decided to try AoC after skipping over it initially and im way more impressed with playing the free trial (tortage) in AoC than I ever was playing Aion.
here's my reasons why:
1. the game doesn't lag out. I have a good internet connection and im located near a major hub, playing aion i always felt like i was lagging.
2. combat. AoC knows how to do it. Aion knows how to spam "you cannot do that while moving" or the almighty "You are out of range" <----happens to melee in flight constantly.
3. Do you play games to progress your character and gear yourself out? Don't play Aion then. Dungeon bosses rarely drop anything but vendor trash. Even in my free trial ive experienced better drops than what i came to expect from Aion at comparable level.
3b. kinda the same thing as above but also most of the worthwhile PVE bosses spawn on elyos side so if you play asmodian you are hosed and stuck with nothing for the most part. Bosses in Aion are all FFA (outside of instances) meaning no tag, people can (and do) train, jump on your mob and try to outdps you to get loot.
4. Korean product v.s american product, unless you want to read 3rd grade english steer clear of Aion, basically the localization team is on vacation and has been since they launched.
5. PVP Aion does have pvp except its not pvp it's zerg v.s zerg. It was a bold move to limit legion(guild) size and make the game about PVP except that the servers can't handle it. Ask anyone who has been in the abyss during a fortress siege. Some people manage to eek out decent frames by turning their graphics down to nothing....but it doesn't help the server lag which is inherent.
take it with a grain of salt but i played Aion when i was out of work and i played alot....So my knowledge of AIon is greater than my knowledge of AoC, which i now wish i had tried sooner.
OK great, I guess AoC it is then. Many thanks for helping me make up my mind guys, it's much appreciated. Can I just ask though, you said if I play a caster type class in AoC that it will be like other MMOs right? Do you mean it will take away the "left attack, right attack, overhead attack" features which you experience as a melee class? If so, that's even better, as I don't particularly like those controls (the ones with the arrows on the skillbar). I'm sure I'd get used to them, but if I don't HAVE to use them (which I gathered seems to be the case with caster classes right?) that's great.
AoC melee is just a button-masher, you hit 1, 2, 3 over and over and over again as fast as you can to keep swinging. I hated that, it is one of, but certainly not the only reason, I didn't pursue the game.
That most certainly is not how you are suppose to play melee.
-AoC is no more instanced that Aion once you get outside of Tortuge, it uses the same shard system
-AoC has group areas, in fact you can turn an entire zone into a group area by going elite
-AoC has great animations
-AoC story presentation is a million times better, the lore is a million times better, and the nature of the quests are a million times better
I agree with your first three points.
No way on the fourth. The story, what little there is, being told in AoC unless something earthshattering happened with the expansion is downright awful especially when you consider the amount of lore and books Funcom had to work with.
Not like Aion is anything worth writing home about either but in no way is the story presentation in AoC better. AoC's story presentation becomes downright dull, cliche, and lacks any emotional depth to it especially the further into it you get.
It starts out okay but gets to be rather forgettable by the higher levels. Not to mention how much it tapers off.
The available lore for Funcom to use is a million times better but not the product Funcom created from it.
Just to be clear, I'm not writing this to try and defend Aion's storyline presentation either. Both games are rather subpar in this area and it shows in both games the further into them you get.

For me i would have to go with aion i wasnt too impressed with the game untill i hit about 26 and entered the abyss for the first time the game changed for me at that point, I played aoc for a little while a couple of months ago a really enjoyed tortage but once i got out into the world i didnt enjoy the game as much and unsubbed.
Personally i take aion for what it is a pvp orientated grindfest the pve is just there to supplement the pvp so its no where near the quality of pve orientated games, dungeons can only be run once every 18 hrs so grinding the gear out of them is near impossible in lower lvls unless your very lucky, as for population from what i saw both games have had an increase in population lately on oceanic servers anyway.
In my opinion aion proberly wont replace your wow desire i cant play it aslong as i played wow for more shorter bursts and I will miss a day here or there and play something else. But its a good time killer untill some of the new games come along next year, the pvp is really fun they may have possibly upgraded servers lately as i havent had many problems with lagging/rubberbanding like everyone complains about.
My advice would be if u own copies of both perhaps resub to both for a month and see which one fits your style of play more.

Probably has more to do with a lot less people playing now than when those posters were having than issues than it does anything else.
As for the rest of your post, I agree.
I found the PvP in Aion to be more fun as well than in AoC. If you could actually level simply by PvP I would probably still be playing that game. Main reasons I quit was because the PvE side of things in Aion is incredibly underdeveloped especially at the higher end of the game and a complete lack of customer service by NcSoft.
Still, even with those problems and the fact that I'm not into the art style presented in Aion if you could actually simply level by PvP only I would probably still be playing.

My personal opinion is that AoC suffers from its own success in Tortuge. Because it falls off from that high quaility early on, you become disappointed in a quality that is still otherwise higher than most AAA MMOs
If you compare the quest lines, the writing, the maturity, the presentation of character of the NPCs, and the objectives in the questlines solely beyond level 20 to those of Aion... AoC is just far and away better imo. I actually read stuff in AoC, I know why I'm doing the things I'm doing and why people are asking me to do those things. I understand the underlying basis of conflict in the different zones (and each has its own story)... I never got that from Aion. Within the first 10 levels of Aion i was skipping through their generic quest text boxes and just paying attention to whatever objectives were assigned to me. The campaign quests may have been fairly good by themselves, but they get so lost in the shuffle that they never hooked me, and I rarely knew exactly what was going on.
AoC is infinitely better than Aion. It's not even a fair fight. Aion is crap, AoC rules
/signed and lol'd out properly loud.
I played the Aion beta and thought it was a bit crap. for me the lack of being able to fly in any zone killed it instantly, oh and that you could only fly for 30 seconds...

Hi I'm new here! Anyway I poked around in this thread to see if AoC or Aion was a new MMO home for me( after quitting WoW after a year and having brief playing time before quitting LotRO, DDO and Allods along with countless others) I've been looking for a new MMO and after seeing this thread I am highly interested in AoC however I am wondering a few things about AoC:
- How is the population?
- Is the game currently going towards bug fixing while releasing content at a good pace or is it pumping out content at a breakneck speed leading to the demise of the game?
- Is the game able to run on my somewhat recent computer?
I haven't played since launch, but I can still answer the questions.
- How is the population? Dying in my time, but no doubt at it's biggest peak since launch in part to the xpac.
- Is the game currently going towards bug fixing while releasing content at a good pace or is it pumping out content at a breakneck speed leading to the demise of the game? Not sure, but if the Ranger skill "pitch pots" still doesn't work as intended, then I think it would answer your question. I don't see how the fast creation of content can breka a game though... unless it comes out totally fubar, which I didn't see at launch, regardless of how many people swore things were broken when they weren't. That's why I brought up Pitch Pots, it's probably the ony real broken thing I saw at launch, while the rest of the players were being borderline retarded about it all.
- Is the game able to run on my somewhat recent computer?
Specs: ATI 2400HD
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
3 gigs of RAM
I'm running Windows XP SP3 as well
Not sure, but if my nvidia 7800gt could play it fine, then you surely can.
- Is the game worth 15 bucks a month?
What game is? Out of all subbed games I would rather give my money to this one though... if I had money to give these days...

There are no official numbers, fanbois will say one thing, haters will say another. A safe bet is to say there are at least 100k subs.
- Is the game currently going towards bug fixing while releasing content at a good pace or is it pumping out content at a breakneck speed leading to the demise of the game?
There is plenty of content as it is, and more will be added. Focus right now is primarily performane and bugs.
- Is the game able to run on my somewhat recent computer?
Specs: ATI 2400HD

Yes, don't expect all the bells and whistles though. Probably a mix of low/medium specs with that card and cpu.
- Is the game worth 15 bucks a month?
To me and at least 100k other people, yes it is. To you, as always, the mileage may vary.

Thank you to all the people who answered my question and I think I'll go and buy AoC tomorrow, I would like to use the trial however a 15 gig download for a trial, isn't exactly an option wih a 60 gig download cap( No I don't live in Somolia, I live in this country called Canada..yes it does exist to all those non believers and I download quite a bit every day which usually caps my download limit for the month by the end of the month.) I think I'll just go and buy AoC tomorrow seeing as how the population is fairly decent in my eyes and the game looks fantastic, quick question though: Which server is the most populated?( I prefer my servers like real life, as South Park puts it: You gotta wade through the dicks to find the right people, translation: Lots of people chat trolls or not.)
Anyway looking forward to seeing you guys in game!

I play AoC and have for a while. I think it is the best choice even to buy. For a new player especially it is a great experience and with the expansion you will have months of entertainment.
But the big win for me is the team behind the game, they do move it onwards and upwards with upgrades and patches that give genuine additions to the game.

If you want FFA PvP, Cimmeria is your best choice. Tyranny is a cess pool with the lowest pop ( not to say that there aren't nice people on Tyranny ).
If you prefer PvE and consensual PvP ( mini-games, sieges, etc ) then either Wicanna or Set are good choices. Wicanna has the highest pop and is also the unofficial RP server if you like RP. You don't have to like RP to enjoy Wicanna though, most RPers have their own guilds. I've been on Wicanna since I started and am happy as a clam there.

From the expansion disc ( which includes the original game ) you're looking at about 2-3gbs of patching.

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Specs: ATI 2400HD
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core
3 gigs of RAM
I'm running Windows XP SP3 as well
- Is the game worth 15 bucks a month?
