Hi all,
I'm an 'oldie' (58) and taken early retirement. I've always been interested in fantasy and I thought I'd give rpg a go.
Firstly I'm gobsmacked at the quality of WoW and the seamless movement about the 'world'. I've got to level 26 in 12 days playing a rogue. As I've no comparrison I don't know whether that's good going or not. I don't understand some of the lingo you guys are on about and I tend to be doing everything by myself although on rare occasions I've joined a group. But I've found that individual objective seam to vary a great deal between players therefore grouping has not been as much fun.
So it's been goodbye to FPS and HL2 is gathering cobwebs. This is much more enjoyable and involved.
So, I didn't know what to expect very much from choice of character. I chose the rogue because it seemed like a good alta ego. Rogues also seem to have more choices than any other character.
The only real problem I have is that to attack in stealth mode you nead a dagger in your main hand. I've not found (or been able to purchase) a dagger that's worth tiddly swot compared with a sword and when I've tried stealth with a dagger I've been mincemeat as soon as the fight got under way (yes I am using dual weild). Perhaps some of you can advise me?
All in all tho, this is an amazing experience....
Alan

You are lvl26, you've just got a new opener - cheap shot, which doesn't require dagger in a main hand.
Only ambush and backstab require dagger, so not having such weapon doesn't limit you greatly. Both skills can be replaced by other as powerful. Using daggers is an option so feel free to choose which build suits you the best when you have proper equipment.
I had the same problem like you alanrco, but then I found out about the wonderful world of macros
It's very easy here are some for:
Going into stealth->
/script UseContainerItem(0,4);
/cast Stealth(Rank 2)
Using Ambush->
/cast Ambush(Rank 1)
/script UseContainerItem(0,4);
using Backstab while in fight->
/script UseContainerItem(0,4);
/cast Backstab(Rank 2)
/script UseContainerItem(0,4);
I'll try to explain what "/script UseContainerItem(0,4);" is,
If you activate the macro it uses the item that is located in your mainbackpack( thats the first 0) and then the 4th slot( thats the 4 ).
So if you place your dagger in the 4th slot then it will automaticly switch from sword to dagger if you go into stealth. If you then use ambush it will switch to your sword again so you can continue to spam Sinister Strike
PS. Make sure you get the Ranks right, or it won't work.

my main character is a rogue not much higher than your guy (mines level 33)
What i do is have a dagger in my main hand and a sword in my off hand. This allows me to your backstab and other openers from stealth that require a dagger. With my talents, I pretty much filled up most of the combat field and got Blade Flurry which works nice. But there is a talent thing inside Combat which allows your offhand weapon to do more damage (in case you were worried about not doing as much damage with your dagger).
But, i do have a lot of friends on the game who love their dual swords. It really comes down to whatever works best for you. Go to Ironforge and look through the different weapons you can buy and see which one works best for you.
Also, now that you are in the 20 something levels...try doing some instances. I'm a relatively casual player and didnt do much in the way of groups until recently. But, if you find yourself a nice group and go to Black Fathom Deep or in a couple levels, Gnomeregan...you will find a very enjoyable experience and some nice items.
Hope this helped and good luck to you on your adventures...
Im 39 in about 4 weeks. I hope Im still playing at 59
I started in computer MMO's with Meridian 59 then UO Beta (6 year account) and everything since and Im currently playing both WoW (22 orc hunter) and EQ2 (36 Ratonga Ranger) and I prefer WoW. So to the people who say WoW is for kids with short attention spans. (its for adults with short attention spans too )
I have been waiting for the novelty of PC games (especially MMO's) to wear off for like 10 years however to my surprise (and my wifes disapointment) the novelty is as strong now as ever. I sit at work and plan my evenings gaming, I spend more mental time in games than in RL. My non PC game playing friends think Im an immature geek with issues relating to normal human interaction and instead of arguing with them I just tell them Im tired, get them to leave and go back to my game
Im even thinking of writing a book about my 10+ years of online gaming and the fact that its a far better form of entertainment than movies, books and all that other stuff people do to pass time.
YAY for MMO's, YAY for MMORPG.com and YAY for old gamers.....

Hey Razorback, I dunno what peoples problem is with mature gaming. I get it too. Don't see them yelling at all those 'couch potatoes' passively dying in front of a TV every night!
I personally think that a game as involved as WoW requires a reasonable amount of grey matter to play. And it keeps the old cells active. After all you have to make choices and can't easily change things or save just prior to when the going gets tough.
A few days ago I brought a couple of great movies, well I think they may be great, trouble is I can't tear myself away from WoW long enough to watch them!
Bummer, Eh?
Saving a lot of money on all those pints I'm not buying now LOL
Eating less so getting to a healthy weight. What my GP's been saying for years...
Hey WoW is healthy, OK

i get a lot of crap because i play my games nonstop and im only 16. ive tried to get a job and stuff but when it doesnt work out i dont really care. more time for me to play WoW. sterio types suck esp. when people knock shit they havent even used, esp. stuff like video games where "it wont help me later on".
i hope i keep gaming for a long time as long as i can
Goddam mad dog gnaws wang! Goddam mad dog!
so true. i've tried for some time now to let people understand how WoW is actually morwe complex and indeep than say.... original EQ?
But no. Some people just read the forums, collect the negative impressions, discard the positive ones (even if in majority) and so comes the myth that WoW is for kiddies, it is simple, it is easy, it is not worthy for a "True" gamer.
What the heck is that.... a true gamer?
I mean... if i compare a Fire Wizard from Daoc (total of... mmmh... 2 bolts, 1 direct damage... 1 AoE. that's it.. plus the bladeturn and the mage armor) to a WoW mage.... there is no chance.
Same for warriors, WoW is the first game that gives each and every class a lot of strategic potential. with numerous and viable choices for each class.
But no, Wow is for "kiddies".... riiiiiight.
Have a nice day.

I have a level 47 rogue and here are some tips on what it feels like to be a rogue.
There are basicaly 2 types of rogues: Combat rogue or Assassin rogue (dont mistake assassin rogue with assassin talent tree).
Combat rogue is basicaly a warrior type, stripped down to leather armor but with very good damage dealing powers. They can use most of rogue skills to enhance their performance. Ifyou choose this rogue, I suggest Assassin or Combat talent tree.
Assassin rogue lingers in shadows, seeking out his prey, stalking them untill the right moment, then ambushing them (assassinating them) with tremendous force, striking fast and furious, slaying opponents within seconds. Sometimes their prey cannot even put up a valiant fight - the sheer force of a potent assassin overwhelming their opponent too fast... Assassins usualy use ambush as their opening attack skill. during the fight, they use all their available skills for their benefit, usualy resulting in a quick and bloody fight. The downfall of any assassin is that they have to use a dagger in their main hand - thus limiting their choice in weapon selection. I suggest Subtiety talent tree for this type of rogue, resulting in a nice attack and defence combination.
It is also a good idea to mix some talents up, but not too much. Its better to have 40/5/10 talents spread then 20/20/20.
im a level 28 guy in RL, and I hope I play MMORPGS all the way to level 80 or something like that
now if only I could concentrate on my rogue.... Playing all my alts is just too much fun!!! YARRRRR
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
