I love playing an archer in mmorpg games. Lately, I've been looking for a f2p game with a strong archer class and I'm having trouble finding one. Are you now playing or have played an archer in a f2p mmorpg? If so tell me about the game and class and what you liked about it. Thanks for your suggestions.

f2p? eh no. There is DDO, solid archer class, especially Arcane Archer imo, but you will need to pay for add-on modules once you hit mid. Classic Anarchy Online archer is ok, but repetitive. I liked EQ archer/ranger the best, especially with high fletching, but before all the game changes, and it's not f2p. Other than that, it usually seems like arcade style archers mostly out there.

Well, theres quite a few out there, depends what else youre looking for in a game, but if you're into PvP i would recoomend trying RF Online for their varying archers.
Ranger classes can use either bows, guns, or throwing weapons and there are a few different types of archers depending on which race you go with as well as which advanced class upgrade tree you take (2 upgrades, 1 at level 30 and the other at level 40). The 2 main archer classes have some slight variations between the different races, and depending on which of the advanced classes you pick, you get class specific skills at each upgrade, but both keep the original Ranger skills (which you can unlock 3 different tiers of, some skills which are specific to either bows or guns). The ranger class is also very good at dodging enemies when you get some pretty decent gear, and some of the best rangers can stand surrounded by dozens of enemies and take little to no damage because they dodge so much,
The 2 main archer paths differ slightly between races as for as specific skills, but the core roles of the 2 paths is this:
1) Trapper - relies on stealth attacks and setting traps to take out the enemy. When you get to higher level, traps are devastating and can in many cases take out even a tank in 1 or 2 blasts.
2) Support & DPS Ranger - also uses stealth and low level trpas, but cannot use higher tier traps (lvl 40+). Rather than traps, this class tends to rely on other types of skills such as Teleporting himself and other players, buffs to things like evasion, debuffing enemies so they cannot skill as often, and the Accretian races version of this class also has a self destruct skill which drops you to 1 HP and stops potion use for a short time, but causes massive AOE damage and is capable of taking out multiple players in 1 blast while leaving you very vulnerable to the enemy if they can hit you before your potion debuff wears off.
Then there is a 3rd option for rangers who play the Accretian race - Striker (Ranger > Gunner > Striker)
Strikers - Accretian are the only race that can use rocket launchers & flame throwers, and Strikers are the specialists in those weapons. They are the AOE DPS masters and also rely heavily on elemental ammuntion which causes double damage against enemies of the opposing element. They do have some powerful "standing" skills capable of 1-2 shotting enemy players, but they really start to shine when in what is called a Siege Kit. These are basically items you carry with you, that you can use anytime/anywhere to become stationary while receiving massive boosts such as 40+% to damage or defense, and + or - to other stats such as firing speed and dodge rate, depending on which kits you use. Strikers also have buffs which increase their damage even more while in a siege kit, and have an AOE skill called Compound Siege, which when used in the right place and right time results in lots of dead bodies with 1 shot, and another skilled called Chain Rocket which focuses 3 powerful rocket blasts (each stronger than your normal blasts) at 1 enemy and most of the time can even take out a tank with 1 use.
Allods scout is pretty good.

Original EQ - Ranger class. It also has a trade skill for fletching.
It's not free, but it's not expensive.

Thanks for the detailed info on RF Online Kaiser 3282. The ranger/archer in that game sounds really interesting. I thought RFO had closed down. I'll look for some updated info on them.
Any other suggestions for a Ranger/Scout type archer character in a F2P?
The original NA Version run by Codemasters did shut down, but it's been back up and running this time by the actual maker of the game CCR for i think close to a year now. check it out here: http://www.playrf.com/index.asp
I played a gun-toting mechadude in RF for a short while, but I tired quickly of hitting the spacebar to fire every shot once the timer clears.

lol... yeah thats an Accretian ranger, and theres actually a button you click (or hotkey i think is Z) which turns auto-attack mode on or off, just have to hit that and you won't need to press it every time, only for skills.
If your thinking about RF and want a "strong archer" class you should go with Acc...They get rocket launchers. I saw a lvl 50 one shot a party of 8 lvl 50 guys using one AOE skill.
Also Aion. It isn't f2p but archers are OP at mid lvls in term of pvp.

Then of course there is GuildWars. Box fee but no monthly fee. Arcade archery, Diablo like, but it's pretty fun. My two favorite characters are my Necro/Archer and Archer/Monk. Get the box set and it's enough content to keep you busy for a very long time.

Lets not forget the almighty Track. Although druids also had the skill, it was no where near as focused as a Gars(Gay arse ranger).

No such acronym. Only thing associated with ranger is “Ranger Down!” that you could hear on chat as a joke. Rangers are not tanks, but they are experts at solo, and were very popular, at least wood elf rangers were. There is a Demo worth playing, though a bit over polished but the game world is fun, and probably still good for a ranger build with the lower population. You can get the sub for cheap if you buy in blocks. Best all time archer imo, and archer is pretty much first thing I play in any game, rl bows are great too
ah and who knows, maybe some day they will finish Hunters World. If they do, it'll eventually have bows, if not at launch. And it'll be f2p. Being always stuck in high fantasy mostly for archer, that would be a welcomed change.

No such acronym? I beg to differ.
I take it you werent around EQ1 back in 01-03 era? I know for a fact it was around on Mithaniel Marr, and other older servers(think I originally heard it on Drinal before moving to MM after a few months....along with sites such as FOH). It come from the fact that Gars were so weak in the early yrs before AAs such as trueshot(or whatever it was called). They couldnt tank for chit, and their dps wasnt impressive either.
Just because you didnt hear of it, or werent around back then, doesnt mean it didnt exist. Thank ye very much.

99 actually, back when the client looked like a classic Graphical MUD interface. Up to/past LDoN or something. No such acronym.

Well, I don't know of any free to play games that have great archer classes.
but... if you would like an opinion I would say that Guild Wars has a great archer class. I absolutely love it.
I really like how lineage 2 did archers.

lol @ the "Ranger Down" comment about the EQ Ranger. Our guild used to refer to it as "Ranger Gate". The original EQ had a good implementation of a Ranger, but it wasn't until a few expansions deep and end game levels, that they became a desirable class play or group with. Up until then, your best melee DPS options were always Monks or Rogues and compared to a Warrior, the Rangers tanked as if they were wearing a tissue for armor. In fact, the only time we really used a ranger in our EXP/Dungeon crawl groups was when we were desperate for a snare. 9/10 times a Wizard or Druid was a better optionbecause they offered more utility and better DPS they could also evac the group in the event of a bad pull or player disconnect. The only way a Ranger could gate was by himself back to his bind (naked). Other than being the best trackers in the game, they really took a while to develop and see some real love from the devs. AA points helped improve the class, but the early days of EQ 99-01, the class wasn't as desirable.
When we pulled Cazic Thule in the Plane of Fear, we would have our Rangers do a /random to determine which one of them agroed CT and absorbed the first Death Touch. I think one of our Rangers never actually got to fight CT, yet he was one of the best geared Rangers on our server. He would just get the play by play in guild chat, while he sat naked in town asking for a rez.. Often times our clerics would heal Necro and Mage pets over the Rangers, heheh.
I'm sure that I'm going to catch some heat from a fomer EQ Ranger on this forum. But I speak the truth Don't get me wrong though, EQ was a great MMO experience. Even if you were a Ranger......
I would have to agree with the comment about the Guild Wars implementation of the archer class. The Ranger in Guild Wars is very fun to play. The Guild Wars box set has lots of content and hours of enjoyment. Best of all, there is no monthly fee associated with GuildWars, so the investment isn't too much.
Check out there Guild Wars forum here, there are a few sticky posts that link the free trial and download.
Good Luck!
One last thing, GARS was a known term for Rangers.
Maybe not on your server, but it was a term used by the community pre-Luclin and perhaps even to this today.

I loved all the archer classes in Daoc..
Ranger Scout Hunter
There was no use of it, apart from a server or two that some kids made up within their guild. I’m sure lots of people made up all types of acronyms on various servers or guilds, doesn’t make it any acronym used on the EQ servers.
I’m not sure what the early history of Rangers has to do with this thread, I think the OP is looking for something playable now, not 1999. Ranger was made out of paper early on, same as all the other classes outside of the holy trinity. But all that changed, all the classes are pretty easy to play, even more so in later expansions. So for solo right now, EQ Ranger is a good choice for someone looking for a strong archery class to experience, something more challenging than arcade play. And well, cheap if bought in sub blocks. Apart from spending a little money, f2p is pretty dead for any solid archer class.
Other than that, DDO, probably get by on $25. Then GuildWars ($50) if the OP likes arcade style archery, but with lots of content.

Daoc ranger.
Squigherder in Warhammer is a blast to play. Archer + a ton of fun loving squishy pets....
I do Archery in reality.
None of these games... None of them... get it even close to reality.
So I just go out and shoot my bow for real. Far more satisfying than these games that never even get the proper Stance right in the basic animations.
Most fun I've had in a video game archery setting was Oblivion for realism'ness and LOTR - The Two Towers (Playstation 2) for arcade-action fun. At least those games got the massive damage a good aimed arrow can do right.
But I won't be happy with archery in a video game until they make you un-String your bow when you're not using it.
The Archer powerframe in CO is really good and you can you can make a Na'Vi like toon:)-yah there is alot of na'vi like toons in CO.
