General: Rumor: Crytek Developing an MMO

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

The LinkedIn profiles for two Crytek employees offered hints that Crytek may be developing an MMO. The profiles have since been altered with more vague descriptions, however superannuation has reprinted the excerpts from both profiles containing the original job descriptions.

James Dennett, Senior IT Manager, Crytek:

Senior IT Manager

Crytek

(Privately Held; Computer Games industry)

February 2009 — Present (1 year 4 months)

Duties: Complete life cycle responsibility for nearly 300 Linux servers in a demanding “zero downtime” environment. Interoperability with Windows clients and game asset systems.

Development (Apache, PHP, MySQL & shell programming) of monitoring systems , network test game deployment systems and various bespoke solutions.

Designing, testing and implementing as part of the development team the systems infrastructure for an MMO online game.

James' LinkedIn profile now  simply reads:

Senior IT Manager

Crytek

(Privately Held; Computer Games industry)

February 2009Present (1 year 5 months)

I work at Crytek in the IT team.

Yegor Bondar who worked as a game designer out of Crytek Kiev until July 2009 previously listed his position at Crytek as:

Game Level designer

Crytek Kiev

(Privately Held; Computer Games industry)

November 2008 — July 2009 (9 months)

Not announced Online MMO FPS.

The position now reads:

Game Level designer

Crytek Kiev

(Privately Held; Computer Games industry)

November 2008July 2009 (9 months)

Not announced

Additionaly, superannuation has also discovered that Crytek has registered a number of new domain names recently, names that they note "sound like a name for an 'MMIO FPS'."

At GDC '09, Crytek presented a tech demo for the next CryEngine, CryEngine 3, which featured, among other things, a medieval battle scene, leading some to speculate that they may be working on a medieval themed game. The following month, Crytek filed trademarks for three names, Gface, Carvatar, and Kingdoms, the latter of which has just appeared in the above recently registered domain names.

Is Crytek developing a new MMOFPs? Perhaps a medieval MMOFPS? Thoughts of an MMO Project Offset are dancing in my head! With E3 right on the horizon, perhaps we'll hear more there.

I hope so. and I hope it's medival. The more people who try to create that kind of game, the better, I say. (I really like the idea if you couldn't tell.)

This is some serious snooping and piecing together. I'll admit hats off to the guy(s) who tie together hints with this one.

It would be interesting indeed. Being the *makers* of the CryEngine and all... they have an intimate understanding of the engine... much moreso than Aion's creators, and look what Aion was able to do with it.

Obviously, look at where Aion failed as well. But Crytek I'd imagine would be a little more 'substantial' in what they would deliver in terms of content.

That is exactly right, and we're not saying NO to save WoW, because it is already a lost cause. We are saying NO to dissuade the next group of greedy suits who decide to emulate Blizzard and Cryptic, etc.
We can prevent some of the future games from spewing this crap, but the sooner we start saying no, the better the results will be.
So - Stand up, pull up your pants, and walk away.

Just like to point out that there are issues with Violent games being made in Germany.  Not sure if they went for the complete ban on making excessivly violent games but they where talking about it.

Should be interesting to see how this effects this game.

    MMO wish list:

    -Changeable worlds
    -Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

And all of fourteen people will have the systems to run it without looking like poo.

    :P

The key to MMOs is accessibility. Crytek's engine is literally the exact opposite of that term. So if they are going to make one, that outcome should be interesting to say the least.

Cry Engine 3 will be the most accessable of the Cry Engines so far, it will run on PS3/Xbox360 and on mediocre PCs.

A good graphics engine has scalability. If this is the third iteration of their engine, hopefully they're getting closer and closer to having a well-scaling engine, i.e. one that looks kinda the same on low settings, but can run on a NVidia GeForce 6600GT, and the 'best' settings looking a lot more detailed, nice shadows/water/lighting/polygon increases etc., on... I dunno, the 270 HD cards or whatever they are now.

Anyways, cool, new graphics engines for new MMOs. I like it.

I am playing EVE and it's alright... level V skills are a bit much.

if you think their MMO, if they are creating one, will look anything like their tech demo's you are just living in a dream world.

People who obviously have no idea how a game is made.....

jokes aside,i dont have high hopes for it,everyone nowdays wanna make a mmo to tap into the cash river,

and im very skeptic about how the cryengine will work in a mmo it was not buit from scratch to support it,

i know aion did the same with Cryengine (1) but they had the talent , manpower and money + the potential fanbase/commnunity and its still not in perfect state .

Crytek can shove it. I will never buy a crytek game again after what they did to the crysis community.

Crytek isnt know for offering fun games. Yeah they can make engines and nice graphic but fun? Crysis were boring after few hours and i  play FPS games for more then decade. Even FarCry were more fun -.-

Entropia Universe. Shitty game, but it was upgraded to the Cryengine 2 from it's original inhouse engine.
